AustinG010 replied to AustinG010's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
At the dojo I train at theres a kajukenbo kung fu instructer and he teaches Chinese weapons to the ones who do shotokan, that is the ones who are intrested. -
At the dojo I train at there's going to be Kachi Kenpo Kung Fu & Aikido. I'm thinking of trying out Aikido, could someone explain what Aikido is about?
-
What are the weapons at your dojo? I'll start. 1. Katana 2. Eskrimas 3. Tessen 4. Nunchaku 5. Kamas 6. Sais 7. Bo Staff 8. Tonfas
-
I know those are, but the type I'm talking about are metal http://www.karatedepot.com/wp-sw-90.html you cannot deny the fact that these are awesome! lol
-
the twin hooks are metal, and the only bad review about them is that they are hard to get used to and learn. btw, I'm buying the weapons at karate depot, they have a lot of good weapons for cheap. And you can read reviews of the weapon or whatever you are buying.

the shang gou swords and nunchakus are real the three section staff is for practice and the kamas are for demos and practice
-
I'm thinking of getting some weapons Carved Dragon Cord Nunchakus = $17.95 Three Section Rubber Foam Staff = $29.95 Planed Grip Kamas = $29.95 Shang Gou Swords (Twin Hooks) = $79.95 Shipping = $2.95 Total = $160.75 is this a good price for the weapons?

Well it went great!!! except the judges were unfair cheated me and jon out of 1st and 2nd place for kata!!! Sifu Nick said that both our katas were so close to being perfect that we should have been 1st and 2nd place. And the funny thing is that they didnt give any trophies for kata to any1 lower than yellow belt and sifu was looking very carefully at everyones kata and he said that they didnt even deseverve 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th. But sean michael did his kata in his division and his was just as good as ours and he got 1st place in his division for yellow belt kata then there was weapons kata and jon used nun chucks and got 4th in his division then sean michael got 4th in HIS division. But when it came to the kumite oooooooh=) i lost my first match but when jon went in there he frickin MURDERED EVERY1 THAT WENT IN FRONT OF HIM!!!!!! AND HE GOT FIRST PLACE IN KUMITE!. Then it was time for my last match the guy kicked me in the face so that was the end of that round. then idk how it happened but i ended up winning 4th place by one or two points and then mikey was in the same division as jon and me and he got third...then sean got 3rd for kumite in his division. and austin got a plaque for finalist and his division Then as far as team kumite goes me jon and austin had to go against all black belts and the final score was 15-5 (we lost ofcourse cause of the judges) but anyways we should've gotten more points than 5 cause i went up against a second degree black belt and i got 5 kicks on him and 1 punch and they only counted the punch and even though ALL MY KICKS WERE ABOVE THE BELT. that should have stopped five rounds cause you have to do six rounds and punches is 1 point and kicks are 2 points. but anyways we brought 7 trophies back total and 1 plaque and that was our first tournament so i guess it was pretty good

I went to my first karate tournament yesterday, and it was the most fun I had ever! I did kata, kumite and team kumite, in team kumite I sparred against a black belt. My next one will be June 12th, and hopefully I'll be doing weapons that day lol.

what style should I try?

I think that there's a place to train and learn at one of the malls here, but the thing is I'm not sure if there open on weekends. And I also don't know how much classes are, and if I get a job this year I would be able to pay for it. -

This goes for this post and the last one you wrote. I want to go to a judo or BJJ dojo, but I don't have any access to a one yet so videos is as good as I can get for now. And I'm not sure if this counts or not but me and my brother used to MMA fight where we do grapples and takedowns only, like I said I'm not sure if it counts for something as a little grappling experience. -

True, but it has videos on how to do the takedowns and someone explains on how preform them I think YouTube is a great research source for the martial arts, and I feel that seeing a judo throw performed, and with an explanation, is definitely a supplement to what was learned in class. To me, grappling arts are not only contact, they cannot be learned without a partner and a knowledgeable instructor. Take Osoto Gari for example. Consider that you and a friend (it's necessary for one to be tori and one to be uke, then switch) watch a video, listen to its explanation, and then decide to take turns performing it. What is the surface you're falling on, since Osoto Gari can be quite a violent throw? Do you and your friend know how to fall without encountering injury? Do you know how to break your uke's balance and control your body to cause him to go down? Do you know how to execute the takedown without causing injury to uke? I think Toptomcat is giving you great advice, Austin. I come from a striking art background, and in the new art I'm studying I'm discovering how what seems so straightforward on a judo video is the academic; actually performing the move is the real challenge of learning--and acquiring proficiency. Here's a site of forty judo moves, all demos: http://www.judoinfo.com/gokyo1.htm You can see they're executed smooth as silk, and you can also see the Japanese names for each on the menu, so you can enter those names into YouTube and bookmark videos with explanations. But in no way can what you see demonstrated, even demonstrated and explained, take the place of a partner and being taught by a qualified instructor. Find a good school and I'm sure you'll enjoy your classes with your sensei. LOL! That's the I found that website earlier -

True, but it has videos on how to do the takedowns and someone explains on how preform themWho will be your partner, though? If my brother will agree to it then him. Even though he hasn't ever done anything as far as Judo or any other style like that, we would be able to practice one specific takedown in various postitions -
