Newbi question - bowing to your sensei
Blade96 replied to GeoGiant's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Haha =] I just thought its a rather lame way to try and 'pick up' chicks one of the funniest pickup ways I've ever heard. and it is kinda disrespectful to deliberately be late for a class. -
LOL that was sosososo funny! "Coach come on, hey? I want to live long enough to see my Bar Mitzvah" "Goldberg, this IS your Bar Mitzvah. Today you'll become a man"

In my school we go more easy with heian katas required to grade... white belt to yellow = taikyoku shodan yellow to orange = heian shodan orange to green = heian nidan green to blue = heian sandan blue to brown = heian yondan brown 2nd kyu to brown 1st kyu = heian godan of course in class you also train katas of grades above yours, Im blue belt and I know all heians Nice. I learned taikyoku shodan as well but since heian shodan was the main kata to learn (and what we needed anyway) I didnt really have much time for it. don't really like the taikyoku ones.

I adora Kata, I find it a beautiful and artistic way to express myself and releases stress (of which i have a lot of) I dont think funakoshi was joking when he named our first 5 katas peaceful mind hehe good name. I counted and this seems to have a bit more kata than we have! In ours we got 26 kata in all (including BB ones) I'm starting to learn sparring Kumite now, I asked my Sandan friend to sparr with me and I got him in the solar plexus (ok more on the side) with a nice Mawashi geri and he's like laughing 'You're not getting away with that' and next time i did it he grabbed my leg and planted me on the floor so hard I took root He never did it again. Because I learned pretty fast to be able to snap back your leg quick enough after the mawashi geri to avoid having it trapped! I'm really enjoying Kumite as well. My sensei and the BB's i like told me I have a good spirit and my kicks are good and hard! lol they also said I love to kick people and punch. and Sandan said 'I think you're dangerous now!' when I said i hope to get real good. I dont think he was kidding when he said that. Tbh I'd be afraid to be paired with a yellow or white belt = Kumite. I might accidentally hurt them because I love it so much i sometimes get carried away and my blocks and kicks are so hard and fast.

Newbi question - bowing to your sensei
Blade96 replied to GeoGiant's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I find a BB intentionally being late so their GF can be impressed by people bowing to them extremely immature and disrespectful. I am a woman and I would actually be turned off by this. BTW I don't even particularly like all of my BB's. I treat all of them well and respectfully but there is only about 4 of them I can say I actually 'like' as people. -
must be different then at that school....here its white belt = shodan, yellow belt=nidan, orange belt=sandan......and etc and i still have trouble shifting from kokutsu dachi to the left to kokutsu dachi to the right (in the beginning) as well. Also I stumble at times while spinning. Ah well. I've only been doing heian nidan for a little over a month. and my sandan says I need to put more passion into it. well ok then. and my senseis would eat me alive with spoons if I went to learn sandan or yondan when I dont even fully know nidan yet! Know the moves yes - but not everything else. Cause my sensei says You can't chase two rabbits.
-
you mean the part where you yoko geri keage (side snap kick) and backfist same time then go into the forward shuto (not a 45 degree one)? yeah i know it.....backstance (kokutsu dachi) is hard for some people I remember when we was just little white belts and learning kokutsu dachi and my co - white belt had problems with it (i still wish to this day sensei would have helped him with that, he helped me with learning yoko geri keage physically with my leg movements but not him with his backstance) btw Bob-sensei, Heian Yondan? Uggg, I got to learn Heian Sandan first when i make orange belt probably in august

Punishment in the Martial Arts
Blade96 replied to rogue2257's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good saying, Bob-sensei! I like that. btw i rather enjoy being picked apart. Because I learn better when they nitpick. I just wondered if Lupin felt anything else other than that though from the way she wrote it. Like her sensei was mean or something. -

No disrespect. but i myself wouldn't train with a sensei who would laugh at me if i expressed concern like that or pointed out my mistakes in front of everyone. Had a Lieutenant do that to me when i was a Royal Canadian Army Cadet in the late 1990's. I hated him (so did everyone else) and the other cadets didnt like it when he did that, to me or to anyone else. Idk. Maybe its just me. But i find that rather mean. I could just think about it for a minute: "Look! Blade messed up her gyaku zuki!" or some such stuff (back when i did mess it up before I learned it) I'd feel so self conscious and embarrassed. -
speaking of competitions I very want to win a gold medal with heian nidan, just as I had with heian shodan and with every kata I learn thereafter.....I just ADORE Kata!

Term 'mcdojo' is rather subjective and different people have their own idea what it means, but basically a McDojo is a place that puts business interests (ex money) ahead of teaching or imparting true MA. Like the contracts, or promoting students too soon before they are ready, to make them want to stay there because tbh, MA is boring, repetitive (to most people) and its really a lifetime of learning. and it takes work before you are ready for a promotion (in ours it takes about half a year - six months) McDojoists know many people are turned off by this. so they'll 'simplify' things, because the black belt is attractive to most people they'll make it 'easier' (ha!) to get one. When really it takes years (in ours its about 6 or 7 years of hard work) Hope this helps

Yeah i wouldn't like it either, girl. I don't blame you. at all. You should have told your Sensei after class. Just take him/her aside and talk to him/her softly. and just say it made you feel uncomfortable to have your mistake pointed out in front of everyone. I would. but then again I feel real comfortable talking to my senseis about anything. They are two of my greatest dojo friends. anyway maybe that's what you should have done. Imo. -
Hehe, Sensei Bob, you are so evil.

Hehe, I bet you liked being used as the guinea pig -
What Sensei Bob said. Don't be scared of them, just have fun! i certainly did. I also approached it with the mind set that I knew all the material. That's important, because it makes you less nervous because you know that you know your stuff. Show em what you can do! and do it with passion and intensity, like you're LOVING it out there. believe me, they like that. (btw thats one criteria they also use to grade you in a kata competition as well. thats one reason I got full marks for my heian shodan in december and won a gold medal.) Good luck! oh. and btw. did i say have fun?

testing for my new belt
Blade96 replied to Pajarito21's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Who cares about black belt gradings =] I dont even think about it.....I'm just loving the training I'm doing RIGHT NOW as a yellow belt. Its just me.....I really dont think about reaching any long term goals until I am almost there. I was the same way towards my university degree tbh. and after one month as a yellow belt I can honestly say its easier than white belt (where I came in and didnt know anything and was like a fish out of the water lol) With yellow belt its easier I found because I've learned to move and turn and block and do some kicks. My sandan friend calls me Kekomi Girl because of my love for the yoko geri kekomi hehe Good luck on that blue belt grading you have coming up I bet you'll pass! -
Yeah. You're Shotokan right? I am too. since I had my yellow belt test a little more than a month ago, I wrote what my own test was like here: http://www.karateforums.com/passed-my-yellow-belt-grading-vt38206.html It might help.

-
Wow....that is different. btw spelled senpai - prounounced sempai. and that's how we spell it too. sempai....

What Is Expected Of You In The Yellow Belt Grading?
Blade96 replied to Karatequeen's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah i was nervous as all get out because I didnt know what to expect for my yellow belt test. -
If a black belt did that in our dojo to anyone, especially a white belt, bullying anyone, I'm not so sure he/she would even see next week =] Our senseis are very protective of us. and Osu Sensei Russell.
