I'm a Karate gal Studying 1 year now and my bf is a Sandan in our dojo. Like other people said its great when both partners in a couple are into the martial arts. =]
-
with my bf and i its the same. In the dojo we dont know each other. 'Oh i dunno this guy' He is Senpai and i treat him as such. and call him senpai. and he's not our sensei so I avoid the can of worms, whooo!
-
I think it can be a bit of trouble but - and i thought i still believed dojo relationships wouldnt work. I still think the teacher/student dating is a can of worms. I dont have anything to do with my sensei's like that. That said, there is this sandan in my dojo......and he's been my bf since april and of course they all found out about it, the senseis and stuff because we were always together. although they told sandan a warning something about getting involved with kyus.....they wont interfere. Personal relationships are not sensei's business. They can only control what goes on in the dojo.
-
can i change my mind and say now that i think anyone from the same dojo dating each other is a bad idea. Because I thought about it and i believe its a bad idea now. yeah i have a story that is great evidence for what i say now. And it happened to me. Might write about it later, to warn others. I used to think Yeah, whatever, it could work. especially student and student relationships (not student and teacher which i already said is a can of worms) i had no problem with it. But after my experience I say now that its a very bad idea.

i never had one but one of my biggest fears is that one day when doing ushiro geri i'll spin, kick backwards, miss the mat completely and hit the floor in front of everyone. Hasnt happened but consequently i always wind up kicking too close to the wall because of it. yikes.

http://i28.tinypic.com/21431ww.jpg although I personally know a husband and wife team (shotokan, like me) who just opened up their own dojo. she's a blue belt so she would still be training under him and she is highest rank, the rest are little white belt so she is the senpai. student and student i think is ok though.

How Do You/Your Instructor(s) Teach?
Blade96 replied to sensei8's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Agreed and I learn by all 3 of those techniques. -
I got told about my yellow belt test some weeks in advance. I didnt mind that - but do think it would be kind of cool to be surprised too.

Didnt plan to become a martial artist. It was a movie - Blade - and wesley snipes and he is shotokan that did it for me. Just pretty much woke up one day and said I wanna try this what snipes does. and found out later it was called shotokan. walked into my dojo on september 10, 2009, watched for a minute and said this is what snipes does. Joined that day and never looked back. Fell totally in love. and still in it =] I told my sensei this story - that it wasnt planned - that i never planned to become a shotokanka. it just happened. Its like it was planned for me. MY sensei looked at me and said, "Its called destiny, you were meant to meet us and to do shotokan"

This is why and we were downtown at the time =] every single person who's every kind of degree of drunk =] and violent too. every tom, harry, and heather =] and human beings are, as forrest gump would say, like a box of chocolates. You never know what you might get. =] well as for the cadet thing, you dont salute your commanding officer while in the bush because, who do you think the enemy's gonna go for if they know who the leaders are? btw i was an army cadet for 4 years , well 3 and a half, really.

Me and a co white belt (when we were white belts) stopped into a tim horton's to pick up a tea right before our tournament in december, ans we had our stuff on, but that was it. We dont even tell anyone our ranks. i was with Sandan/senpai a couple days ago and we were having a drink. He had his shotokan jacket on. But while we did mention that we both do karate and talked about it, neither one of us told our status or told each other's status. Afterwards he said I noticed you didnt say anything about my status or rank or sandan or senpai. I said No I dont do that, thats for you to say if you wanted to. But just like BB's arent supposed to show any stuff in the street (though he played aroundwith the idea of doing kanku dai at a club for fun, lol) you dont tell your rank either. Just as cadets arent supposed to salute an officer while out in the bush. Thats just asking for it.

Pretty much like this for me, when i tested for yellow belt minus the papers and oh, yeah, the table.
-
My house is also too small, so what I did was break down my kata into bits. Like do the first few moves of heian nidan then do backfist and yoko geri keage separately, standing in one spot I perform all the moves. Its not doing kata properly, but still get to do each movement even if i cant move in a small spot.

Should children be given black belts?
Blade96 replied to JiuJitsuNation's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No! our association wont even promote teens, let alone child, to BB. You have to be a certain age. -
You're right about the rank of Sandan my best friend in our dojo is a Sandan. and he's the reason do get to sit at the BB table lots of times lol because he wants me there. =] When you reach sandan i might add you also become a Senpai. I call my friend baby Senpai =] because its the lowest ranking senpai. about the 16 year old BB I wouldnt take it seriously. Our association wont even promote people of that age to BB. And I dont think anyone should? btw a 16 year old SANDAN?? My two cents.

Patrick Most bullying will not happen in front of authority figures because bullies know how bad their behavior is. and it seems that article is talking about the common schoolyard bully and not the absolute torture i was put through. In many cases you cant leave it alone because bullying isnt a thing that just sorts itself out naturally. The article also seems to confuse bullying with natural social hierarchies/spats. I couldnt stand up to them, couldnt protect myself, and i should not have been 'left alone' and expected to. Because I almost died from it. Literally. Some people just need help despite what that article says. As far as I am concerned that article is mostly garbage. And this coming from a survivor of torture, as I call it. Cause thats what my experiences were.

Have you ever been the target of a bully?
Blade96 replied to Martialart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Got bullied. How I dealt with it? I quit school in grade 10. It was the worst kind of torture and assaults and the school wouldnt do squat to protect me. -
Martial Artists of Noble Stature
Blade96 replied to Martialart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
btw i've a bachelor's degree - BA, Bachelor of Arts - but no black belt. I am a yellow belt in Shotokan. I'm perfectly ok with that. I moved up from white belt and throughly enjoying being a yellow belt. -

Already decided to do that. I'm way ahead of you. I really loves my shotokan! and i'm not quitting because of a few snobby black belts. Btw you do sound a wise old sensei. But i never ever thought of leaving. -

i hate it when my BB's separate themselves and we cant sit at their table even when they arent having a meeting....because im a Kyu. I talked to one of my brown belts about it and brown belt kyu feels the same - unwelcome. Un believable.
