What short term AND long term injuries have you sustained in martial arts or self defense? What have you done, or continue to do, to aid-assist this injury(ies)? How long, have you had this injury(ies) and has it gotten better or worsen? If you contribute the injury as martial art related, do you have regrets?

Striking with elbows instead of fist
RichardZ replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Not to come off offensive, but many females, musicians, and the like who also practice martial arts, do not desire to abuse their knuckles also. In a certain aspect, a female could learn to clench her fist different than a male for a few reasons. One has to use caution when appl;ying a elbow as not to strike with a incorrect portion on a incorrect target. -
Aikido In Competition

So some say. But a teacher is applicable and useful. -
Nowadays, many do not desire to spend countless hours in learning traditional forms, weapons, pressure points, etc., to where RBSD (Reality Based Self Defense, or RBD) or Reality Based Martial Arts, seemed to have sprouted up like wild daisies. Gone are elaborate or high kicking, elaborate ideals of so many places where to strike, multiple patterns of blocking, etc. Key words are practical, applicable, probable/improbable, and environment. People like Marc McYoung, Iain Abernethy, Geoff Thompson, Bas Rutten, Robert Bathol, Imrich Lichtenfeld, Gerry Nolan, Bruce Tegner, Jim Wagner, to name a slight few, have come to realise the importance of defense fighting as applied to actual, out of class confrontations. The root of self defense is not what is workable in the classroom or school, but what is one subjected to in a social-cultural environment for which they would be more likely be exposed. This is not to state, that one should not study other methods to gain versitility, but one should not put too much focus on such methods slighlty indiffferent to said environment. The phrase-quote; "fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times", has only a half truth. The other half to this is; it depends on what or how effective said "one practiced" kick is. It is no use to practice something for so long without a practical application and force it to work in another.

RichardZ replied to Tae Kwon DOH's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Perhaps you are not allowing your body to naturally applied the mechanics of it or you deviate slighlty. Does this happen when kicking with either leg? -
Aikido In Competition
RichardZ replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
There is. All martial arts were originally combative. However that doesn't mean that all martial arts schools practice to prepare for self defense or combat anymore. but if you have that 'budo mind frame' Wouldnt you be able to make everything effective in your own right? "Budo Mind frame"? How can one have such a mind frame, if at first they do not have proper instruction from a qualified instructor? -
I tend to think these type of trainings are more "instant grits" which may lack certain other martial art attributes.
-
One would think so, but many females and small framed males, tend to train to get a upper edge. Does this mean because these people are "smaller", that they do not stand a chance against a larger person?

Muscle tissue breakdown during sleep?
RichardZ replied to GhostFighter's topic in Health and Fitness
"Conversely, when you go without food, such as when you’re sleeping at night, the making of muscle protein falls off sharply. To a lesser degree, the breakdown of muscle proteins also declines, so you end up with a net loss of protein. Therefore, going without food overnight or for an extended period has a catabolic effect on your muscle tissue." Good article here; http://www.powerbar.com/articles/76/Muscle-Building_Nutrition_on_the_Cutting_Edge.aspx " -

Aikido In Competition
RichardZ replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Actually, in this application Chuan (quan, kuen, kune, kuyhn, etc.) mean "fist". Not too many people actually practice the Quan aspect. -
Aikido In Competition

I thought Master Pan, practiced a few other arts which were the actual ones responsible for his ability. He had rained.with a few martial art pioneers as well. I would think Sanda was more in part to Sanshou and not Tai Ji. And less not forget, Tai Ji and Tai Ji quan could almost be different martial arts. -
I met a Chinese martial art teacher who did not demonstrate any real type of sparring as I sat in as a "guest" (Talked to a few of his students, he didnt-but this not the same guy I spoke with in this thread starter) At a event, said Chinese guy, old guy, looked out of shape, was able to wipe the ground with two younger dudes. He was so embarrased and apologetic afterwards, I thought he would have a nervous break down.
