Ready my Sparring Accidents thread for an explanation on Novice-to-Advanced ratio and how it applies to sparring. Don't be afraid of point sparring. It's basically a very simple training exercise. You don't learn to fight with this exercise. You are taught how to react.

The guy kicks like a horse, but I was tired and just stood there. It took forever to heal. I usually get tagged when I go in to attack, hit a few times and they hit me when I retreat... Kinda silly how it ends up with them trying to trade blows and that's all. Heh, fear the whitebelt.

But Ethiopians LOVE their crayons..! I think Bush is just another politician, whose policies I don't agree with... As for being ugly, well he sort of looked like a monkey from time to time.

Ok, so most schools do not teach karate for fighting and self defense as well as say, a MT school. How do you incorporate, or fix, the karate school and keep the spiritual aspect? There are some people that want to learn everything that karate and MA have to offer, not just fighting.

Man, when you train, study, work, and play... you don't have time to relax anymore. It's good to get a weekend to relax now and then. Anyway, during my previous two sparring classes I've faced people that were close to my rank, yellow (9th kyu?). I've been accidentally injured in both of these classes. The first injury was a side kick to the ribs, after I had finished a few hits on his body and head. He decided to kick me when I withdrew, full force... I think it just stopped hurting today. The second was a simple bloody nose from a very quick back-fist. I try my absolute best not to hurt my fellow student. If we agree on full contact, then I will hit them but not to hurt. It seems like a lot of the other low ranked students feel they need to 'prove' something though, or have no control whatsoever.... I feel more safe sparring an angry black belt. I don't mind the injuries so much, or the pain, that comes with the territory. It's just the lack of physical and mental control. I'm sure the more experienced here know this, but I just wanted to point all that out for anybody going into Karate in the near future... be afraid, very afraid of that yellow belt sparring partner.

We just had the largest paintball tournament in the world here. Well that's what they were calling it. I keep finding places where kids have tossed their extra paint...

justice, injustice, self defense, i need an answer to this

Now that I think about it... there was a case of school bullies being found guilty of, well I forget the charge. But, the important thing was that the court found the bullies responsible for the victem commiting suicide. This is in Canada though. -
I wouldn't say that endurance equates to power. Endurance is just a measure of how long you can keep on moving. Better technique will let you focus more of your own power.

Depends on what size we're talking about. If it is weight then it doesn't matter. If it is height, then it does for strikers and I don't know for grapplers. Having that extra reach helps a bit, but doesn't ensure a victory. Weight might matter for a grappler, but what do I know? Heh. I do know that I would find it harder to move a heavy guy than a light guy. Damn those laws of physics...

Definitely speed. The faster you get that punch going the more energy & force is going into your opponent. Strength = lifting weights Power = Strength + Speed ... how quickly you can use your strength. As for bodyweight being put into a punch, well, the faster your bodyweight is moving the more it hurts. You can't change your weight dynamically, but you can change your speed. If you try punching somebody on frictionless ice, well it just won't hurt as much. You'll be moving away from your opponent before you even hit em, effectively slowing down your punch.

common mistakes in sparring
WhiteBelt replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This thread made me realize I'm going to miss sparring this Tuesday, to help my GF with an essay outline. Damn university work... I am only a yellow belt, but I get to spar with everybody at the school. I see a lot of people fighting far too linearly. I've sidestepped a few blue belts already. The one mistake I hate most of all, lack of control. I'm still nursing my chest from a sidekick three weeks ago. The way I see it, it was both his mistake and mine. The guy kicks like a horse. A lot of the beginners love to get all tangled up, and just stand there trading blows. When you're trying to pull your punches that doesn't hurt, but in the street or a competition? Heh -
My school brought in a kali instructor for this... personally I'd go for number 2, after I know how to quickly break arms.

If you're not capable of defending yourself against them, then you would want to get other people to see it the same way you do. Sometimes it really is best to stay out of other people's business, but if you truely feel it is wrong then go for it. Just try and avoid violence. -
Hey Ladies! (And Maybe the Menfolk as well....)

My GF attends classes with me. It makes stretching and ground fighting, *cough*, interesting. -
I lived through the whole beginning of netgames... heh. Used to be near the top of the food chain back in the day.

It will be hard to learn technique while you spar, but you will atleast learn how and when to use them, and when to get out of the way. If you work on your technique maybe twice a week for an hour, you'll probably be ready in a month. I say that only because you don't want to have any bad accidents. And you definitely want to spar only higher ranks, so you can learn from them, and so that you don't hurt them.

Japanese/Okinawan Stylist do you break at your school?
WhiteBelt replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Karate
My school used to require board breaking from blue and on, but I haven't seen it done yet. -
I used to play a bit, mostly indoor. I have an impulse, mask, an extra spyder te, and other assorted parts... I haven't played in I don't know how long. My friend said that he is dragging me out to the next scenario game whether I want to go or not.

After reading the Bubishi I was under the impression that having different styles has always been a part of the MAs. Look at the crane gongfus, there are many styles. Unless you consider 1400 and on modern (I admit I probably have the date wrong). The way I understood Bruce was to embrace formlessness. Which to me meant to take what you need and move along... Oh well, learn new things everyday.

Racial profiling is bad, but is a by product of fear or racism. I don't know how you could possibly stop it when your enemies are predominantly of one ethnic origin. Imagine how it must be in middle east... BTW, I'm from Toronto too.

There is an area just south of my home where a lot of elderly people live. For some reason there is a higher than average accident rate there. I've been witness to a few, and was almost run over but an old man that probably fell asleep at the wheel, in an intersection, in the middle of the day, not even rush hour! ... Actually, most of the intersections in my area are full of broken windshield glass.

De-Stiffenization(Just invented that word lol) of new belts
WhiteBelt replied to Afro.Fighter.'s topic in Karate
Make sure the edges of said door are not too 'sharp'. No sense in ruining that brand new belt. -
If it was found 50 years ago, everybody would be the ultimate fighter. Ok, so we have this modern idea that styles only limit the practitioner. That s/he must seek out and experiment to find what is best. Thank you Bruce for this idea (unless somebody else started it before him). What is the point in arguing over which and what is the best then? I can only see the argument as a passionate debate of egos... Anyway, a possibly more important question might be, how do schools evolve in the future with this new philosophy? With the focus on taking only what you need from an style will you lose the art? Many of the more traditional styles focus partially on developing one's self. If people can choose not to study this are they any less a MA? Is it healthy for our community to lose this aspect as well? I doubt the outside world would aprove of a group of people training each other to be killing machines, without any code to keep them in check.
