You could be right. Either way, I thought it was cool that they had some actual martial artists instead of the typical actors trained in martial arts for each scene. -

I looked up Kuro Obi a few days ago to see who the "actors" were. Turns out the two main actors are played by a 5th degree and 4th degree in Shotokan. That would explain the very small amount of lines they had. I really liked the movie Fighter in the Wind, too. -

Judo is just a great compliment to anything you do, really. You mentioned kata. As far as I know, kata are only done at the high level of Judo, especially if it is a Kodokan club. I could be mistaken, though. One thing I liked about Judo is that the newaza stuff typically has a time limit placed on it. You're forced to attempt submissions, or vie for better position or you are stood up. I think you only get like 10-15 seconds. However, this also tends to make a lot of people turtle up. Which is typically a no-no. -
Absolutely not, imo. I would just make sure you are very progressive with it. You don't wanna try and punch a hole in the tire your first day, lol. There has to be a lot of guys in their fifties that still do this type of thing in their work. Lumberjacks, maybe? I think that if you just pay attention to your body, don't overdo it, take things slowly(which i'm sure is a no brainer for an 8th degree... ) you'll be fine.

What style of ju-jitsu is it? I'll just go ahead and put my vote in for Judo. Lots of good experience with Judo and I think you'll find it is in the same vein as your Kyokushin class. I.e. competitive, realistic self defense, and intense training. Also, the range will be very familiar to you. It would be a great fit, imo. -

I work in in a jail so I have to deal with these situations a lot. The biggest factor is body language. I can usually tell what is going to happen from the way their are posturing or if there is any chance of deescalating. For me, I only fight when I have to. I don't particularly enjoy it, but once I know it is going to happen regardless, I make sure that I don't lose. If that involves me making the first move, that's fine. Less of a chance of me losing in that case.

I USED to be a big time Call of Duty player. I was so big into it that I even wrote the strategy guide for playing MW2 multiplayer. If you google "How to not suck at MW2 Multiplayer" you'll find the guide I wrote a few years back. Now, I don't even own a gaming system. I have 2 kids now so no real time to play with regular martial art practice, working my garden, and loving my wife. So, other hobbies would include P90x, Wilderness Surivival, and that's about it. When i'm not practicing my martial arts I am conditioning for it. I.E. makiwara, iron palm, etc.

Only eat foods that you can get by killing an animal or from a plant. Processed foods are no bueno.

Increasing upperbody strenght and determining fitness level.

Wastelander was actually saying that the ONLY alchohol you should consume is wine. And only one glass a day. Also, make sure you're getting a steady diet of protein if you are serious about getting stronger. If you have access to a gym you would do well to look into Coach Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength program. Pay no attention to the myth that if a girl lifts weights she will get "bulky" and look like a guy. It doesn't happen unless you try to make it happen, and then only at an advanced level. For general strength do what Wastelander said. Air Squats, Pushups, Pullups, Situps, and lots of rotational abdominal exercises. Your hips are what power your punches so they need a lot of attention to develop proper form for strong punches. If, and when, you stick to doing a set routine of bodyweight exercises(and if you don't have any lifting experience or access to someone who does or to a gym), you would probably benefit from doing a program like p90x. But, you shouldn't invest in something like that until you're in good shape and know you want to stick with something similar. -

Is your goal to punch stronger or to get stronger in general? Or to just become more fit overall? Also, everyone is always going to recommend that you stop smoking. It is poison. -

Sounds like a case of your fight or flight instinct kicking in. Which is normal. Experience is what it boils down to. You don't have enough experience in sparring that emulates combat. Just spar more, as realistically as possible. Your sparring should be giving you a similar feeling; you should be nervous to spar. If you aren't nervous to spar, you need to step it up or play with someone bigger and better. The hard truth is that this feeling never goes away. You just learn to deal with it. Once you've been doing it for a while your mind will start to use the techniques you've been taught and been practicing.
