Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have some that fit me to a T You know you're obsessed with martial arts when you take a pole vaulting pole out of the shed and practise forms with it. You breakfall every time you land in the pole vault pit. During roller hockey practise, you take your stick and start practising basic strikes as if it were a bo. You use your sparring bag as a duffel bag because it's the only bag you own that meets carryon luggage regulations for a trip. You practise forms in the jungle when you're not doing anything just because you got bored. The injuries you get in MA training keep you out of your other sports, and vice versa I'm guilty of about 85% of the things posted... should I be worried???

I had a massive case of the butterflies when I tested for first degree, but it wasn't due to a lack of faith in my technique. It was because Grandmaster Burleson was sitting on the test board and I was the youngest person testing for first degree EVER (at 15.5 yrs old) in the history of our studio. My second degree test was full of short tempers and nerves. I had demo practise the night before, and nothing went right. Other circumstances did not allow me to have enough time to fill in the application to my liking before the day before. Then the morning of, we had the demo right before the test, instead of after. After the demo, then I just ignored the world. I felt much better after the test was over. Then the anticipation of the results kicked in, on top of finals week at school. that tipped me over the mental edge and I was a headcase until I got the letter telling me that I earned my second degree

For me, I think the nunchaku have been the most difficult to deal with. When class ends at 9:30 pm and I'm all sweaty, I can't keep a hold of them, and they go flying. The most frustrating weapon I've learned to use is the bo. While in class, I toss a roll of packing tape up with the bo, then try to catch it as it falls. Not terribly successful, as I have the WORST depth perception and coordination when I throw the tape

Which Forms?
twistkick kid replied to storyteller's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The school I've been training with does only ITF forms, but not all 24. We do Chon-Ji, Do-San, Yul-Gak, Hwa-Rang, Chong-Moo with the coloured belts. Black belts start with Kwang-Gae, then progress through Po-Eun, Gae-Baek, Ul-Ji. After third degree, we can choose to learn whichever forms we want. -
ok... what I thought would make my trip to class yesterday more fun made it agony I was getting my bike out of the garage so I could ride it to the dojang, and I smashed my toe under the tire. Made it to class with plenty of time to spare, and a little river of blood dripping down my toe. Put a bandaid on then taped it so it would stay on and my toe wouldn't move. Went home after the beginner adult class ended, went to bed, and kicked the wall in the middle of the night. Woke up with a really painful toe. My other foot is hurting along the metatarsal region. I mis-timed a kick during a sparring match and caught a big guy's elbow It only hurts if I stand up for too long, or do too much jumping. The pain isn't excruciating, just enough to make me slow down and go "ouch!" on occasion Any advice other than the proverbial "go see a doctor" ?? The pain in my metatarsal region is going away, but I'm wondering how long the toe should take to heal sorry about the rant... I've turned into the walking klutz again

Things NOT to say to your instructor...

In my studio, I'm the youngest person to hold a black belt, never mind a second degree (my current rank). I was assistant teaching the other night and somebody said, "Why should I listen to you? You're not even 18!! This drill is moving too slowly!" To which I replied (because we were working on joint locks), "If you do this too fast, I will give your partner permission to reciprocate the favor." -Our school has an unwritten rule that you go the pace your partner is ready for, and no faster. -
What did I teach today?

Last night, we spent a large portion of class working on balance and the proper way to do jump spin kicks. Had people pick up small kicking targets with their feet, then pass them to a partner. Worked on spinning with proper balance, then throwing a crescent kick. did not delve into the timing of the kick too much, as I was giving the intermediate adults a taste of what was to come. Then had them jump and spin, then kick. Some had an easier time with this than others. -
I'd love to start my own club... I'm not certified to be an instructor, though. When I go look at colleges this summer, I will ask about different clubs on campus and try to get in contact with the instructors. I'm more than willing to try something completely different if the opportunity presents itself, and I'm eager to broaden my knowledge base in TKD. thanks for all your input guys

last night was the "fun" class after stripe and belt testing. I ran the beginning/ intermediate adults and teens through "sumo wrestling" which is where you try to push your opponent out of the circle or make them fall. Make rope circles out of jump ropes. grab a partner. left hand on the belt, right hand on the sleeve of the uniform. tell them to keep their balance and let them try to push each other out of the ring. I jumped in for a few matches and got flung around works on balance, shifting weight from foot to foot, and strategy/tactics... what works to get one person out of the ring may topple you over the next round -
I'm not rushing... my head instructor has a habit of pushing me through a little quickly because I figure out the material really fast ie I already know all the techniques for our third degree form and have half the pattern memorised with the proper stances and positions. I wouldn't want to do Olympic wrestling. I'm really short and kind of skinny... I'd probably need to get peeled off the mat with a spatula when I finished my first class

Hi everyone I am a brand new second degree black belt in TKD and will be starting my senior year of high school this August. By the time I am eligible to test for my third degree, I will be a sophomore in college. This wouldn't put me in a quandary if I were to be attending a local community college like Palomar or Miramar, but I am planning on going to a four year school either in Nor-Cal or out of state. Should I find a local TKD studio or club through the college? If the school I choose does not offer TKD, I am willing to try another martial art. Any help would be appreciated twistkick kid

Absolutely too funny!!! I can't stop laughing I've had multiple embarrassing blunders/goofs over my decade in the martial arts and seen many as well. My first one was my own fault for not being aware of my surroundings. I was overeager to go to class one morning and ran into the dojang while managing to open the door over my big toe. lucky for me nobody but one of the head instructors saw it. ended up in urgent care trying to figure out how my toenail was hanging off and my toe broke. Goof #2: I was testing for my level 6 or 7 junior black belt and one of the exercises was to pair off with an instructor for one steps. Imagine a 4 foot 9 inch little kid paired off with a 6 foot something 200+ pound guy. He said "hit me" so I took that to mean clobber the guy. I hit him as hard as I possibly could in the solar plexus and ended up knocking the wind out of him *major ooops* we still joke about it 6 years later. Goof #3: the dreaded pair of pants! I have trouble fitting into pants because I'm particularly short (5 foot 2) If I get size 2's, they don't fit my waist and are barely long enough; but if I get 3's, they're too long until they've been through the wash at least 20 times, but they fit my waist. Whenever I get new pants and I'm in class, count on me ending up on the floor for no reason at least 5 or 6 times... even as a second degree black belt I don't think I can get customised pants tailored to fit me until I can get a job that pays for that

I am working on my instructor certification and I wear red pants to signify that I'm in "Instructor College." I was working with a group of younger students and one of them asked "Did you spill cherry juice on your pants?" I had to laugh
