to get a new escrima stick. I have had my old one for 8 years and trained on and off with it over that time. It is made of rattan, which I like, but it is now starting to splinter. I am pulling slivers of wood out of my hand after last night's class. I have a back up, but it is just a piece of wooden dowel cut to size. I'm uncomfortable with it because the stick just flies out of my hands- even after I've roughed it up. Does anyone have a particular brand/ company that you would like to recommend? I have a Century Hand Carved Escrima, but I am looking to try something that doesn't splinter. thanks for the input, Twistkick kid

How do you get it out of your throat?

we were working on weapons disarms this morning in black belt class. the gun and stick disarms went well, but the knife disarms turned into feather duster disarms. there weren't enough practise knives to go around, so my partner and I ended up having to use a mini feather duster. we were trying to take the threat seriously, but most of the time I was laughing- until we started calling the duster "duster of death!" the halfway funny part was that I had a multitool in my gear bag that we could have gotten away with using... had I remembered that it was in there before the class ended

I like to put peanut butter on a tortilla and stick Fritos (corn chips) inside. I put ketchup on my eggs- don't know why, but I do Does anyone else stick onion on their hot dogs? I enjoy the onion flavors, but I tend to freak my friends out with that combination

Any signature moves?

twist kick to the face... works almost every time, especially when sparring taller people who can't kick any higher than my belt hook kick round kick combination is another favourite- although I use this more in one-steps round kick and run jump side kick are my favourites for board breaking -
this thread is too good to leave untouched. sorry about resurrecting this, but after the past 4 weeks, I have a few more funny stories. We have a black belts only class on Thursday morning and we've been working on a series of different joint locks and pressure points. keep in mind that I am hyperflexible in the wrists, elbows and one of my shoulders. I had to pick a partner to work with... I happened to pick the other person like me as my partner. How does that happen needless to say, we both spent lots of time laughing another week I was working with a third degree who is a chiropractor and acupuncturist...she was constantly muttering things about L-this and that I was working on my forms and tried to put my fist through the wall, almost broke a mirror, and put a dent in the wall with my staff all in one night a few years back... only me

What are the weapons at your dojo?

What weapon do you actually carry?
twistkick kid replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I carry keys, a pocketknife, and my cell phone almost everywhere. When walking to TKD, I carry my escrima, wood and foam nunchaku, and/or my bo. At school, I carry keys, a cell phone, heavy textbooks, and track spikes. If I ever got attacked at track practise, run away... I could use a pole vault pole as an extremely long staff or drop a shot put /discus on your foot. I could kick you with track spikes on... Hockey sticks make great improvised bo. -
I think a re-introduction is in order

Now I know that I shouldn't teach one of the macaques I work with kicks like that... ROFL -
Hey there. Call me Twistkick kid. I've been in TKD for 11 years now. I earned my 2nd degree black belt last summer. Took a 9 month break because of school and sports, and I'm back now. I tend to read more posts than post my opinions. I joined the forum last summer, but lost passwords and school prevented me from visiting more often. I'm back for the summer! and hopefully longer if I can remember my stinkin password

I have a chronic right ankle sprain that I forgot to brace last night. seems like once or twice a year, I end up in the local E.R. due to a run in with a big out of control dude in class or a collision with a wall. Right now I'm dealing with some minor soreness, bumps, and bruises from coming back to class after a nine month break... ugh

Rule I have... IF it stinks, wash it!! wash it perrmanent press, then dry it on low. New uniforms, I wash with old towels in case they decide to bleed colour all over the place

Interesting viewpoint... One question: would "pushing the envelope" be only related to doing poorly in school, or does it also involve being a risk taker? I'm not one to push the envelope, but I take some big risks at my "job" and in my athletic pursuits

The Martial Artists' Training Log

Tallgeese - who is Boomer? a training partner? I ran through all the forms I knew yesterday facing different directions and starting from a specific move. Tried doing Kwang-Gae, Po-Eun, and Gae-Baek backwards... didn't work out so well today I will be sharpening my reflexes while goaltending for roller hockey. I'll go to class tonight and hopefully get to work on sharpening the little details in my forms -
It was one of those "nobody caught my mistake until they watched the final footage from the test" I combined 2 forms, and nobody noticed anything except for the fact I was facing the wron way when it was over. My instructors always say... If you're gonna do it wrong, do it strong! My explanation that I should have posted earlier!
-
However, IMHO, it's not entirely based upon the forms you know. Speaking from experience, I have botched forms quite badly during my black belt test, and still passed.

A black belt isn't just a piece of cloth... it's a lifestyle. (Train hard and live like a black belt- Mr. Andy Thompson.) A black belt isn't an excuse to forget the tenets of TKD. A black belt isn't a destination, it's the beginning of a new Journey in the MA's

I'd go see a doctor as soon as possible. It could be a sprain, but better have a doctor look at it in case there is something really wrong with it. It's always better to be safe than sorry, IMO.

Lesson for the day... Walls hurt more than boards- Pull your punches if you're too close!

Just got back from the dr's. office. Just a big bone bruise for now... If they find anything out of place in the X-rays, they will call. The nurse had this look of utter shock when I explained what happened. She thought I did it on purpose.

It was at 9:20 PM... should have gone to bed instead Limited range in my left little finger and the knuckle

Hey there! I had the wonderful experience last night of becoming the class laughingstock. Normally, I'd be ok with that, but I'm worried that I may have done something to my knuckles or hand. I punched a wall while demonstrating Gae-Baek. It hurt when I did it, and it still hurts this morning. I have a limited range of motion with it. How do I tell between a bad sprain or a break? I'm gonna go see the doc later.
