How is breaking most important to you
KickChick replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
.... me too! This is an old thread on breaking ... I posted on this the first week I was here on KF back in Aug. 2001 ... some other views to check out http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=3570 -

anyone know any ways to stop feeling intimidated?
KickChick replied to KerouacKev's topic in General Chat
(.... this is probably Strategy forum post) I don't believe it is an intimidation, self confidence or self estemm issue .... it is your issue with "fear" ... plain and simple. Fear is very good at pointing out dangerous situations ... being on the street late at night is certainly one of them (unfortunately!) If there is a danger of being hurt, then it is normal for you to be afraid. Your fear will help you take steps to avoid being hurt. It's been said that assertiveness will prevent an attack and aggressiveness will provoke one. -

True...boards don't strike back (that popular saying of Lee's) but I don't believe he was 'against' breaking I just believe he didn't believe one should focus on a single skill (like kata) and ignore all other facets of your training. Breaking develops "impact power" an important skill a martial artist cannot acquire through sparring alone.. Breaking develops your confidence. Either you can break or you can't (okay so it's an ego thing -- big deal)...and when you can do it, that "confidence power will be there for you when you need to tap into it. Do you know that this power doesn't decrease as you age. You do happen to lose a certain amount of your speed, some flexibility(if you don't keep at it) but you don't lose the powet in your striking ability in fact sometimes it increases. The purpose of all that focused impact power is to break bones .. would you rather do that to your sparring partner? I think NOT! Breaking has been equated to the roadblocks and challenges we face in our life. If you don't break at first try.... you keep trying. You are not successful until you break the board..... you don't give up! Believe it or not this skill can be incorporated into your everyday lifewhen you come across a challenge or difficulty ... you inspect it, measure it, focus on it, and hope for an impossible solution, until the problem is resolved.... or "until the board breaks"! -
Those of us that have or know a service man or woman serving do appreciate your sentiment ... Keep those messages coming ....

Maybe we can change title of this thread to ... "Guess the Slang" in order to keep it going! We have all sorts of countries here... with their own slang terminolgy such as UK, Australia and US (very infamous all three for their "slang") Maybe more ... I'm not really sure So what does " who opened their lunch?" .... really mean in Australia?

Seems you understand the controversy surrounding "child" black belts ... case by case basis is a good rule, unfortunately ma is big business. Keep us posted! (BTW ... how old are you now! ... Came across this today at work (I work at a travel agency) http://www.icehotel-canada.com/en/hotel.htm ... unbelieveable (I myself would prefer a grass shack on a white beach but hey I'd check it out!) Its a hotel in Quebec Canada made entirely of ice! We are looking into checking it out. Any Canadian members know about this hotel? Anyone else know of any "unique" hotel or vacation spots.... I can pass the info along!

Same here Ken ... I started TKD training 10 years after we got married, and two kids later. But I have to say he is impressed ... maybe not so much with my martial art ability.... but with my flexibility
