  1. I don't know of any biomedical concerns, but then again, it's not my field of expertise either. I've occassionally done circuits with out them at my place simply because I was doing drills on the mat as well. But that's in my basement. I can see the gym operators perspective from here as well. All sorts of fungal and backterial stuff gets transported around on peoples feet. I'd be a bit put off if someone I didn't know marched around on the station I was about to use without shoes on just for that reason. The materail that bars, plates, ect are made out of is less conducive to growing ick than feet. What if everyone or even a few started doing it? Are you going to want to walk up on a station that some random dude sust stomped around on with his bare, sweat generating feet? No thanks.
  2. I'd agree for all of the above reasons. Also, that single kata might be the only thing this individual has practiced for a whole year. If it's been his priority of training, or sole training, it's entirely possible. By the time most of us spread out our training sessions to be well rounded, we've diluted the total time spent on each aspect. Some people might not be interesed in well rounded and choose to focus on a single aspect.
  3. today- 3 mile run legs/shoulders lots of work with the kettlebells Cool down with hip work and shrimping on the mat, as well as some work on Boomer with half guard and high guard.

  5. today- BJJ: Drilled with rounds of moving from side to mount to side while keeping pressure down. Went on to side to knee in, counter to a hip check down man makes, move to mount. Finished drills with rolling work to back. For technique we drilled a sweep from half guard, followed by a movement ot knee in and a far side arm bar. Finished with 50 min of free roll. Worked on some holding stratgies with the gi lapels.
  6. today- Angle drills on the mitts, 45 min. Worked slipping off to the outside, countering. Moved on thru setting up the sent arm shulder takedown off the inital movement. Knife control for the low sets of attacks. Finished iwth 3, 3 min rounds of knife sparring.
  7. In the scope of trad weapons, the bo might have the most value. However, I'd still say that a short stick, hanbo or escrima would have more immediate usefulness. Espicially in the day and age of easily accessable collapsable batons. I think as far as white belt vs. blac belt, it's really up to the instructor and the system rather than the individual student at a certain level. The teacher and his system will define what he teaches. A student will either be into that or not. At that point it does kind of come back to the white belt student. What are you in it for? Self defense, cultural exploration, exercise, competition, ect. It's a step I think all practitioners at every level need to go thru regularly. It ensures that you're getting the most out of your training time and keeps you on task. To some white belts, who join for sd purposes, they might need an instructor to guide them towards the training that will let them reach their goals. Conversly, a student who's been training for sd for years might decide that he want to explore something more artistic. I've seen and been through both. Just some thoughts.
  8. Awesome! Been waiting for that for awhile. Starcraft is one of those games that still holds up well enough to reinstall and plan again even now. Holds up well. Blizzard has been a great source for games. Looking forward to this one as well.
  9. today- Training with the team for the day. Mainly it was focused on room clearing, force on force, ect. That being said, it was a lot of simunition training and that's never bad. After that, all I managed was some shrimping work and hip drills on the mat after dinner.
  10. That's Bruce Siddle's argument. His work "Shapening the Warrior's Edge" is definatly worth a read. It touches heavily on the subject of choosing a few, widley applicable tactics. It's a solid argument. The trick is picking the best tactics. That's pretty much what we're getting caught up on here to an extent. Personally, I feel that this is where Siddle misses the mark when he develop's PPCT (the DT program he developed for LE use). But that's a personal thing. That being said, the argument is solid. Less is often more with sd.

  12. tomcat, I agree. It's alot of time invested in something that you're counting on somehow "crossing over" into whatever you happen to be carrying or happen to find. If your focus is to be sd, cut the filter out and train what you might actually be using.
  13. today- 1.5 miles on the treadmill. Ok, it can stop being cold outside now. back/bis/forearms abs Lots of functional lifts today. KB's ect.
  14. yesterday- BJJ nite: Worked on escape from the side mount. Follwed up with a counter arm bar and then moving to half guard. Capped the technical portion of the night by working a sweep from that half guard. 45 min free roll.
  15. Thre are actually several places civilians can go to learn "gun-fu". Some of them very good. Even Paul Howe teaches civilian course in tactical pistol and rifle at his facility in Texas. Gunsite, Sig Acadamy, and Thunder Rance all come to mind as well. At a more accessable level, even the NRA has some good basic pistol and rilfe courses these days that will give you really good and current information. We've even sent guys from the department to a few of their schools. They are availiable enough for those who want to add that diminsion to their training.
  16. The bodies natural response tends to put one side forward. Why not capitalize on that and spend a bulk of one's time pressing on with that. Personally, I spend about 90 percent of my stand up time working off that side that comes forward out of the flinch respone. It helps me maximize my training time. So, yes, we can be. And it's not necissarily a bad thing.
  17. I see where you're coming from DWx. I agree, there are probably some cross over aspects with trad weapons that might be useful. For me, it's about time management and playing the odds. First up, I have limited training time. That means if I want to do weapons, I need to focus on the primary one's I'm going to deploy. As above, knife, club, and gun. Then, I need to put the most time in the ones I place the most value in. So, at this stage in my life: gun, then knife, and finally club. The cross over effect you, and others, have mentioned can probably be surpassed by specifically drilling unarmed work that will accomplish the same thing, more likely in a quicker fashion. So, whatever you might achieve for your unarmed skills by training trad weapons, I'd focus on drilling without the weapon. It's specific, designed for the application you're working on, and therefore will be a better learning tool. All this is, of course, predicated on training primarily for sd. If working trad weapons is an end of itself for one, then it should be pursued on that basis alone and with the support of the ma community at large. Not everything has to be for the same reasons.

  19. I think that there is little reason to train in classical weapons unless part of your goal is the preservation of their history. For sd, I think club, knife and gun should be trained. They are common and modern. Why train them, because sometimes your unarmed skills, regardless of level, isn't enough. That's reality. Escalation of weaponry is a valid choice when faced with a better opponent, multiple assailants, or anther individual who is armed. But you have to have spent time gaining skill in them. That's why. I agree, you should only carry what you're willing to deploy. So some soul searching on your reason from training is in order. To me it's a no brainer. Train what you can legally carry and be prepared to use it if needed.
