  1. I have been feeling all alone. LOL. Glad to hear your better. 10/14 BJJ nite: Drilled over open guard pass to knee in. Followed by movement to back. Free roll for 40 min.
  2. That's the beauty of this forum, intelligent discussion. Really, that's pretty hard to find on-line. I see where JJN is coming from. I'd like to agree; and I guess in principle, I like the idea of patting this guy on the back. However, on the practical side, I lean towards Kuma's viewpoint. I rarely chase people at work for almost all the reasons that Kuma lists above. Even with weapons and training and such, it's too easy to get ambushed or hurt otherwise. Fleeing suspects are what dogs and perimeters are for in a best case world. That's not saying I've never chased, but the situation has to be just so for me to justify the risk. Personally, this situation wouldn't rise to the occassion. The cost benifit doesn't weight out FOR ME. Now, move him to an aggressive posture, or it's my house instead of my car, we have a different situation.
  3. 10/12 Drilled doubles and singles, butterfly sweep, then moved into the deep half guard. Free roll for 40 min
  4. 10/11 BJJ nite: Drilled over omo plata to arm bar. Finsihed with omo escapes. 40 min free roll
  5. 10/8 BJJ nite: Warmed up with back mount to arm bar to triangle. Moved to technique with guard to omo plata, followed by sweep or triangle series. 45 min free roll.
  6. 10/4 BJJ nite: Drilled over mount retention and arm attacks. 20 min free roll
  7. I get what you're saying, about isolating small movements to work, but I still have to go with Nation's intial thoughts. If you're training for sd, it's a practice whose time has probabily passed. You can drill small motions with deliberiate purpose while in more realistic positions. I think it's really more of a tradition thing now, or as Nation made the comment on, a way to minimize takedown injuries. Now, again, if you're training to keep a tradition alive, there's no problem at all with this. But you really have to realistically ask why you're doing an art. For sd, you're actually better off training out of a chair since that's where we spend a big portion of our time off our feet. A couple of times a year I'll end up doing juft that to keep the ideas fresh. I should probabily do it more, but my goals have changed over the years. Now I am more likely to enter conflict as an aggressor, essintially. As a cop, I'm rarely ambushed from sitting but more often am moving to take someone into custody. So, in addition to evaluating the resons you do an art, you also have to continually evaluate your needs within that art. My thoughts, that's all.
  8. 10/2 BJJ morning: Free roll day- 12, 6 min rounds
  9. ps1, you make a great point. One that gets overlooked alot. Predatory attacks in our world work much like the animal kingdom, those least able to protect themselves often are the first targets. At 37, I'm still pretty strong for my size, still fairly fast; but I'm not what I was on sheer physicality ealier in my life. There, I said it. That means that right now, I have to start fighting smarter. And training smarter for longevity of being active in the arts. Extrapolate that by 10 years, and I've got to consider some force multipliers. Weapons, ect. So, rather than wait until then, best to train now for those inevitable years. That's why I think arts designed for modern combative work need to consider knives and guns in their tactics. It's the reality of the world now, and the physical degredation we all see as we age will eventually make us rely on exteror edges. Now, can we minimize that degredation, of course. That's why diet, excercise, continual training all matter. But you can't deny the changes that occur. best to consider the options now.
  10. 9/30 BJJ nite: Worked more off the high guard series from ealier in the week. Free roll for 40 min
  11. 9/27 BJJ nite: Drilled over high guard position, moved to arm bar/triangle/omo series. 40 min free roll
  12. 9/26 2.5 mile run legs/shoulders abs Shoulder is better. Lots o advil and ice. So far so good and light on the work today.
  13. 9/25 Open Mat day: 75 min of free roll. Did manage to hurt the shoulder. Bummer.
  14. It's incidental contact. No, I don't think you'll get many people saying it's a problem. Still, my wife occassionally expresses her discomfort with the idea. Not so much with my rolling with females, although I think this does bug her a bit, but mainly when we discuss starting my 6 yr. old daughter in the program. You'll find, the more torunies you go to, there will likely be female divisions. This will probabily make the point moot and your mom will be more comfortable with the idea. That being said, given your age you have to live with your parents and vice versa for lots o years yet. Best to come to some sort of accord. Don't fight them too much on a rule they set like this, even if you, or a forum full of martial artist disagree. There's pleanty of time and divisions in the older years for you to explore the competitive side of the arts. Good luck. Keep us posted.
  15. I train pretty much the same things as have been talked about. Sprawl being primary, eascpes, holding position. The difference being I spend alot of time working controlling the sidearm while we do al those things. I also work on presenting the sidearm under my terms. I also work on presenting and shooting from positions where cops get in bad shape. When in doubt, when all other options are exhausted, I want my guys to be able to present and shoot their way back up from unorthodox positions and get out of trouble.
  16. 9/22- Drilled positional drills, guard v. pass and then from standing. Covered side control to mount work. 45 min free roll
