  3. bushidoman, the eyes closed thing really made you aware. It made you focus on the movements and techniques and the feel of things. It was an excellet training day. It also served to slow things down to allow for technique advancement. 2/7 BJJ nite: Drilled guard posture, and passing. Then, sweeping with a pendulum like motion. 60 min free roll.
  4. 2/5 am: BJJ class Free roll day, 1 hour free roll with all matches with eyes closed. pm: Drilled open guard work. Sweep, submissions. 45 min free roll. 2/6 recovering from watching the ufc last night and indulging a bit.
  5. Let's not forget, being in less than dominant positions is at least half of the BJJ game. You need to learn to like that as much as being on top. Or at least not learn to hate it. There's alot of beauty in the angles and intracacies of working from the bottom.

  7. GS- pretty tough to be honest. But we broke enough to manage. Not much on this front. Between extended shifts due to the weather and sleep due to the extended shfts I'm not even sure what day it is anymore.

  9. There are different levels of "pro" in most sports. Taking boxing for example. How many pro boxers ever make it past a club level. Not to many really, but they are out there, grinding away cash at all sorts of venues. Most would look pathetic next to guys who earn ppv bucks. Same with mma. The bigger organization, the bigger the venue, usually the better talant one can see. It's not something that only mma fans have to deal with. It's everywhere.
  10. It's actually far from cheating when one is rolling with a gi on. Working for your "grips" as they are called is a tactic that is a specific part of BJJ. In fact, many movements are designed around proper grips work. The torreando pass for example works best when grips are used. They are part of jiu jitsu much as any position or submission. Now, if you're working no gi and training specifically under that, most tournies don't let you grab shorts or rash guards, ect. Maybe this is what you're partner is referring too. But gripping the gi is part of the art. There are specific movements designed around grips. No cheating there. Just look the specifics of what you're training for. If you're club focuses on no gi, they might feel that way. I'd caution about just doing this though. Great technique can be developed thru the use of the gi. Not to mention if you're not rolling gi then you're missing a big part of the art.

  13. It still makes for interesting discussion. It's not like the problem is going away anytime soon. And yes, as an Illinois resident, we do teach just about everyone in our state to be victims with policies like this.

  16. 1/23 1 mile legs abs Conditioning. There is nothing more frustrating than working knee in drills on the swiss ball. signed up for the IBJJF winter open in Chicago next month. luckily, it does not look like I'm going to need to cut weight.
  17. 1/22 BJJ open mat: Warmed up with review of half uard sweep and transition to x guard. 75 min of ree roll. Big focus on getting my spider guard sweeps fine tuned. Lots of time focused on top game and pressure. Played a bit of inverted as well.

  20. Ditto. Usually from up near my head. The whole chambering thing is an effect of kata from back when they were actually moving textbooks. As it was explained to me, the chamber is not in fact a ready position, but part of the set of movements that indicated a push/ pull motion of a joint manipulation. In this case, a standing arm bar designed to destroy the elbow. Think about it, if you've gained control of a bad guys wrist and you want to control it where to you want to pull it to own it. To you side, about belt height where your hips control it. In several instances this is followed by what is often called an inside block. What this is is the second half of the movement. You turn the body (sometimes seen in kata as well) to extend it and strike opposite the elbow joint to injure or destroy it. So, that's the easy "why" to chambering. In the interveaning years we've lost the concept of the tuite concepts behind many of the movements and decided to call them strikes and blocks. Often they aren't. To this end, if one were to talk about proper chambering posture, you'd actually be correct as to it's placement. Control is always better when locked to the hip rather than higher on the body.
