Whats everyone's favorite Move?
Ironberg replied to Pepparoo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
In sparring, I love the rush of scoring with any spin-kick. On the street - anything that connects hard. -
God rest his soul. His selflessness shouldn't be forgotten.

The trick is not to use brute force with your forearm. Against arm-breaking techs such as the round-kick I've been successful using the palms of my hands or the vicinity around my elbow, etc. Shin blocks can also prove very use-ful for the flexible, and quick-footed .

Hey all, martial arts weren't meant to destroy orangatangs! That's what you're 12-gauge is for .

Sometimes I like to work on my "root" and "structure" of my stances by holding them for a long time while holding weights. It has helped me feel more solid while preforming kata. Just some 2 cents.

Work up to it. Kumite can be a rewarding rush once you get use to it. Do blocking drills more often and become more use to relying on your reflexes instead of your flinching. Learn to circle; Always keep your eye on a strategic spot on your opponent, and do not let your eyes become predictable. Practice on your strong techniques often and vigorously. Practice makes perfect. As long as you put your heart into it you will succeed. Good luck.

Finally I found a real dojo!
Ironberg replied to drunkenninja's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Congratulations, dude! Good job on the find. -
I usually spend my time training, instead of running. Seriously, if I want to build up my stamina for something, I personally simple work on the actual activity (unless general calisthenics are concerned). I like hitting the heavy bag (sometimes until my knuckles are splitting and my feet get blisters), sparring, performing kata to exhaustion, etc. If I had more time, I would run more. One of the last times I ran, I ran a good, strenuous eight miles - about several months since the last time I ever ran. I will admit - I do bicycle alot because I don't have a car. Sometimes about 10 miles a day (let's see: 3 to school, 3 back, 2 to gym, 2 back).

I'm starting to become a tired old cynic as well. In my mind, true love exists - it's just a rare gem that few ever find or understand.

I'll be honest concerning my choice of karate. Firstly, it's the best my small corner of the earth has to offer. The reason I don't get much competition is because people are generally lazy in this town. Secondly, I can't say much for the fellow practitioners, but my instructor isn't lazy. He has taught me alot of things that have helped me succeed in this art. I look forward to learning and developing more, but I feel I've hit a strange plateau lately and am not improving at the rate I desire. True, work and school has recently been a deturrent. I will say this much, if a kickboxing gym opened up around here - I'd be the first to sign up. That doesn't mean anything much against karate, cuz I'd still be studying karate because of the different perspectives it offers, and because of kata, etc. Sorry for the ramble

beijing Bound
Ironberg replied to Monkeymagic's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Um... Karate - no! However, why don't you study some kung fu while you are there? -
Yes, to me, practicing the martial arts as a sport is also important. It's not merely for the image, or the trophies - it's the idea that I can apply what I do to some degree, and enjoy the rush of doing so. Going into traditional tourneys or the ring is alot better than taking it to the street (I'm sure we agree there). Yes, competition can be misleading to tradition, but I don't think it will make me less of a martial artist.

Trinity would be Samus from Super Metroid.

Judgement Day - UK
Ironberg replied to aefibird's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Nice! Wish I could go, but I stopped living in the UK ten years ago. -
I found that rather enjoyable. Fortunately for those of us who enjoyed it: some people have WAY too much time on their hands. I'm sorry, but Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't make a good Morpheus - I'm sorry.

I Joined Karate/ TKD for these reasons: 1. To become athletic. 2. For competition (yes, sport). 3. For the ability to defend myself. 4. For sparring. 5. To learn and produce (new) kata. 6. To push my limits. 7. To have an activity that involves the mind to some degree. 8. To gain weight. 9. Coordination/reflexes. Karate has given me all this and more (flexibility). However, the competition side is really kinda waning because of the limitations of being in a small town.

When do you jump?
Ironberg replied to Ironberg's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Yeah... I see what ya'all are saying. Personally, I've been able to really surprise people with my jumping kicks, but that's usually because I'm taller than everyone.
