  1. Cater to the students abilities; learn what they are/aren't, to as much as it is possible. My son, Nathan, is a special needs adult, 24 years old. To look at him, one wouldn't know that he is until he speaks. He's not disabled, however, he's special needs, per the dictionary's definition... dis-a-bled: [dis-ey-buh-ld] 1. crippled; injured; incapacitated. noun 2. (used with a plural verb) persons who are crippled, injured, or incapacitate Special Needs: The special educational requirements of those with learning difficulties, emotional or behavioral problems, or physical disabilities. Again, learning the difference of the two, as well as the pertaining laws, are quite important; both for the student(s) and for the Instructor/School. The special educational requirements of those with learning difficulties, emotional or behavioral problems, or physical disabilities. So it appears that they are educational requirements. “Special needs” is about education, and “disability” is about your body, your brain, your senses being wired and tapped in a unique way. In the USA, the SKKA refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA) as well as the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (EOA), through our Legal Team, often and always for the purposes of protecting all concerned parties. Why?? Before the SKKA and its Instructors can teach any student, they both have to be compliant across the board first and foremost. If not, then close the doors!! It takes more than learning the different ways to teach those students that are disabled or special needs, and that is very important, and what's equally important is what the laws are pertaining to its building and staff. Not meaning to steer away from Danielle's serious and important topic at hand, I don't know much about the laws in other countries, whatsoever, but here in the USA, we've the ADA and the EOA, the scope and the breath of those laws are so undeniable and unambiguous that we, of the SKKA, as a Governing Body, have a responsibility to our Student Body in such a way, that we seek out special counsel, and we're fortunate enough in that our Legal Team, which is an outside Law Firm that we hired on retainer decades ago, has three lawyers who specialize in the ADA/EOA. Did you know that the scope of ether the ADA/EOA is so, that it's not just who, but it's where, as well. It doesn't matter your MA school is or isn't a stand alone school, like at the church or at the Recreational Facility, like the YMCA, or at the Public Parks basketball court, one better find out the pertaining ADA laws before one begins to teach and/or deny their accessibility to joining your offering of MA classes, and not just the inside but the outside of the school. In the USA, is your MA school ADA compliant?? Do the mats have level-up guards at the very edges of the mats, for example?? Are the instructors ADA compliant?? Answering the ADA/EOA concerns are paramount before the doors open to teach anyone anything. The 'How-to' teach special needs students must be in concert with the 'Do-and Don't' laws where one lives. Imho!!
  2. Kris Bryant. He's my 2nd cousin (his grandpa and my grandma were brother and sister). Maybe next year. Now I'm back to rooting for my default-- GO YANKEES! And if they get out, GO ANYONE WHO ISN'T THE RED SOX! ROFL...I knew there was a reason why I liked you a lot, Devin!! Even though the Cubs lost to the Rockies 2-1 in 13 innings. I don't see any reason for both the Cubs and its fans to feel defeated; the Cubs have shown as of these many years past, leading up to last night, that they Cubs are a team to be reckoned with, and not scoffed at. Sure, the Rockies advanced to the NLDS on 2 Cub errors, but the Rockies better cinch their straps tight because the Rockies against the Brewers in the regular season were only 2-5; that's nothing to toot their horn about. The Cubs, and your cousin, Kris Bryant, will be back in the playoffs again next year. And tonight, the Yankees better play better baseball across the board against the A's, or the can join the Cubs watching the rest of the playoff at home. Tonights game, as Zach Kram, of the Ringer, wrote earlier this morning, "This Isn’t ‘Moneyball,’ and the A’s Aren’t Underdogs" Time will tell!! GO YANKEES!!
  3. As the saying goes...Better late than never!! Welcome to KF, Hokie6260; glad that you're here!!
  4. Great MNF that was way over due, imho, and great game recap, Brian. A back and forth game, for sure, as both teams traded field goals and TD's, albeit the Broncos ran out of gas with only a field goal to show for their 4th quarter efforts. Meanwhile, the Chiefs maintained a full tank of gas with their 2 TD's, which was needed because had the Chiefs only managed a TD and a field goal, they would've had to go into OT. However, the Chiefs had that put-up-or-shut-up AND go-strong-or-go-home attitude about themselves, and they weren't going to be denied the 'W' at the closing gun of the 4th quarter, on which the Chiefs are undefeated, 4-0, while the Broncos bucked their record to 2-2. I have always appreciated everything about the Chiefs across the board, and many times whenever my Cowboys were forced to watch the playoffs on their TV's at home, and the Chiefs were on the gridiron defending their playoff rights, I always cheered for the Chiefs on to the SB without any reservation. GO COWBOYS!!
  5. That's awesome. Would you be willing to tell us his name? I'm excited for the post season to get started here. The Royals had just an abysmal season, which I kind of expected, but not this bad. But, they have some things to look forward to. Mondesi really started playing well, and was knocking the crap out of the ball, and O'Hearns looks like a promising young player as well. If Bonifacio can stay out of trouble and play an entire season, then I think KC can have a decent offensive lineup next season. They just have to rebuild their pitching staff. Junis looks good, and Duffy will still be consistent, but the bullpen needs reworked. Who is everyone's WS pick? KC's season could've been far worse; ask the poor Orioles who limped into the privilege of having the worse 2018 MLB record of 47-115 with a .290%, and 61 games behind the Red Sox. True, your Royals ended up in last place for the AL Central with a 2018 MLB record of 58-104 with a .358%, pitcher Jason Hammel finishing with a 6.02 ERA, going 5-21 in June, winning a total of just 11 series, getting swept 15 times, yielding 10 or more runs 18 times, finishing 33 games behind the first place Cleveland Indians. If the Dodgers can keep the Brewers at bay, and if the Yankees can shake off the Red Sox, I'd love to see a Dodgers and Yankees WS...once again; the battle of the coasts. However, both of these teams, no matter how good they are, have 8 other teams rifling for being in the Show of all Shows...the WS; there are no easy sweeps and/or series' this year, imho. GO YANKEES!!
  6. Last one is mountain. That is true, about the last kanji being 'mountain'. 風 is Wind 火 is Fire 林 is Forest 山 is Mountain 林 山 together are Forest Hill 火 林 together are Forest Fire 火山 together are Volcanic 風山 together are Wind Mountain 風 火 林 山 together are Wind, Fire, Forest 風 火 林 together are Wind, Fire, Forest Maybe the "山 Mountain" is silent.
  7. Cowboys WIN...again!! An up and down battle today between the Lions and the Cowboys; a nail bitter and a yawner at the same time; the Lions scored 2 times in the 4th quarter to the Cowboys' 1 TD...Lions tried but to no avail. Back and forth sea-saw had it's makings of boredom, but as it's often said in any sporting activity..."That's near 1 hour of boredom followed by near 3 minutes of excitement!!" But Dallas woke up the fans when mere minutes remained. Deep at their 25-yard line with 2:17 remaining, Prescott systematically marched down the field, with the roar of the crowd, and in my living room, Prescott found Elliott along the right sideline for a huge 34-yard gain down with a on-the-money pass to the Detroit 25-yard line. One play here and one play there, it was time for the field goal team to take the field for a 38-yard field goal attempt by Maher...tensions up and fans on the edge of their seats...Maher surgically divided the uprights...as the hero for the Cowboys and its fans...and that's the near 3 minutes of excitement. Cowboys 26 Lions 24 Cowboys are now .500 with a 2-2 record, while the Lions .250 slide to a 1-3 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Cowboys travel to Houston, TX, just a 4 hour drive south on I-45, to meet the 1-3 Texans at the NRG Stadium. I believe that the Cowboys will escape that close game by their skin, as well. GO COWBOYS!!
  8. The Cubs are a solid team, and imho, they've casted off their dreaded curse in a much respectful fashion. The Cubs are holding onto a 1 game lead over the Brewers. Now, the Cubs, 94-67, are hosting the Cardinals, 88-73, and they've split the 3 game series so far, with the season closer today, September 30, 2018, first pitch at 295PM, at iconic Wrigley Field, in Chicago, IL. Cleveland is in the playoffs once again, and that would be great to see the Cubs win over the Indians once again like they did at the 2016 WS in a nail biting finally in game 7. However, Cleveland has to go through Houston first, and the way Houston is playing, that won't be a picknick; Houston is predicted to reach AND win the 2018 WS!! Good luck to your cousins Cubs during this season. GO YANKEES!!
  9. I'm not really sure, but it wouldn't surprise me one iota if the famous music group Earth, Wind, and Fire used that kanji, or the most nearest to it, on some type of marketing tool sometime during their long and lustrous career of 49 years. Maybe...
  10. Oh yeah... It's my pre-workout as part of my cardio; while I'm at the gym 6 days a week, I shovelglove 3 times a week at the gym...yes my gym has sledgehammers for a variety of endeavors, especially the kill the monster tire fun exercise. When I was first introduced to the shovelglove about 1 year ago, by watching people at the gym perform it, I thought that that was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen. Albeit, I thought the same thing when I first saw the Battle Ropes, but now I can't live without the Battle Ropes. Same thing for the shoveglove. As the saying goes..."Don't knock it until you've tried it!!", and once I tried it, I saw the value of the shoveglove immediately; I can't live without it. Because of my lower back, is why I only do the shovelglove 3 days a week, and not 6 days a week.
  11. Here we are, MLB time for the PLAYOFFS... My Yankee's could have done worse, but they did better than rest in the AL East... They capped off the regular season with a 100-61 record, 7 games behind the 1st Place spot in the AL East, Red Sox, with a record of 107-54. These two teams are ending the regular with a 3 game series at the historic Fenway Park in Boston, MA...they end the regular season, as well as their series September 30, 2018...first pitch at 3PM. The Yankees VS Red Sox record during their last 3 game series has the Yankees going yard quite a lot... Yankees 11 Red Sox 8 Yankees 8 Red Sox 5 While these twos rivalry is no secret, my Yankees has the better record at 30-27 this year. Hopefully the Yankees will sweep the fast and final season,,,and what a year its been for them both. After this Sunday's season closer, the Red Sox will get a much deserved rest before they meet the winners of the one game AL East Wild Card game between the A's and the Yankees this Wednesday, October 3, 2018...at Yankee Stadium, first pitch at 705PM. Then, should the Yankees defeat the A's, and they should, then the Yankees will travel back to the Green Monster for a best-of 5 game series against none other than the Red Sox; 2 games in Fenway Park, then 2 games in Yankee Stadium, and then, if need be, back in Boston. Hopefully your team is in the playoffs, and do well...if not, then better luck next year. GO YANKEES!!
  12. Well, it's time for some NFL, and my poor Cowboys are off to a rocky rough tough start, and thus far, and when you combine Pre-Season AND Regular Season, they've managed to win 1. Not good, but not bad because they could've loss them all. I know Pre-Season doesn't mean anything to many NFL fans, but Pre-Season does give their fans, like me, a glimpse into this seasons future. Right now, the future looks bleak, but not hopeless...yet. Here's how it went down... Pre-Season: Cowboys 21 49ers 24 Bengels 21 Cowboys 13 Cardinals 27 Cowboys 2 Cowboys 6 Texans 14 Pre-Season record: 0-4 Regular Season: Cowboys 8 Panthers 16 Giants 13 Cowboys 20 Cowboys 13 Seahawks 24 Regular Season record, thus far: 1-2 Next... Lions VS Cowboys at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX...12:00PM kick-off...Hopefully the Cowboys will get the 'W' for that .500. How'd your team do so far?? How about the COWBOYS!!!!!
  13. sensei8, this is excellent and I agree. It can also be called "stuffing." This is the approach many grapplers and wrestlers use as well...close the range quickly so that a striker can be neutralized...and Tuite is grappling at close range, so it works. Also, I agree with a lot of you as well...a good punch is a good technique. The exclamation of our brand of Tuite is that our goal is to get behind our opponent through angles and space management transitions; not many move effectively when their opponent, you/me, are behind them...and all the while jamming them to the nth degree with one set-up/checks after another. Shindokan is quite adamant about many things, but right at the top of the list is...If you can't get behind them, then get out; you've no business being there in the first place. The game of chess is at foot...or hands, as per our case.
  14. I know. Many, many teachers teach this technique against a knife. Many high grade teachers swear by it. But they have never put it to use in real life. If utilized against a novice it may work but the chances are high you get cut. Used against someone with any level of training... well lets just say that will at the very least end up in the hospital with stitches, that's if the attacker is squeamish and stops after seeing your blood. Don't take my word for it. Attend any knife fighting class and you will realize that, blocking in general, against a skilled person with a blade ends in tragedy. Have your Uke attack you at full speed and tell them to make it real. Use a lower grade with little experience, give them a marker, and just see what happens. I think you'll be surprised how many times they tag you. Don't wear your nice new Gi. To be honest I was taught the same thing but after my time in the Corps and studying under a Filipino knife fighter I was able to convince my Shinshii to remove these techniques. If you block an experienced knife fighter they will rip back as soon as they experience resistance and both of your arms/hands will be shredded. Hard to defend yourself at that point. Solid post!! I'd never ever use many blocking techniques against a knife, for the many reasons that you speak about here. Without a knife or the like, I'd use the upper x-block because it transitions into other applications.
  15. Shindokan does have its fair, although small amount, share of techniques that aren't that important. Should the powers that be ever discard those few Kihon, it wouldn't derail its effectiveness whatsoever. I call these Kihon...less attractive; not less effective, but without the same romance that I have for the...most attractive Kihon, I prefer. While the less attractive Kihon is what it is, I've kept them in my back pocket for their very special resurrection. After all, one doesn't throw the car away just because it has an less attractive paint job...right!?! Some of the less attractive Kihon, that I believe aren't that important, are... 1. Bent wrist block 2. One/two finger strike 3. Attention Stance 4. Back Stance 5. Any X-Block, except upper 6. Etc. But what's one to do?? Nothing...use them...don't use them...but never forget them.
  16. MA politics can be the bane of existence, and I wish politics could be abolished for once and for all from the MA. While the MA can do without any politics, it's an unfortunate reality for any Governing Body, even the most recognized Governing Body has its own difficulties. After all, nothing is perfect. What Governing Bodies desperately need are unwavering integrity from its leadership across the board in all departments without any ambiguity. This, right here, isn't written in granite, nor is it ever guaranteed, but must have the trust and faith from its Student Body; without that, the Governing Body is an empty shell with no conscience whatsoever. Titles and the like, have been relegated to the value of the one penny candy that's found stuck to the bottom of one passerby's shoe because of, as it's already been mentioned by several here, ego. The legitimate rank that they've honestly earned, that seems to have lost its luster, just isn't good enough for them anymore, so, for whatever sick and twisted reason(s), they invent a phantom Senior Dan Rank/Title, for the hopes that it'll somehow magically satisfactorily fulfill their vacant and desperate and lonely existence...but it never will...no matter how hard they try to scrub and scrub that illegitimate stain away...they never ever will. That's for some, but not for others!!
  17. Jamming!! The core heart of Shindokan's Tuite; this is the hub of our brand. If my opponent can't complete said technique, then I've set in motion as to neutralize my opponent. Nothing more enjoyable than seeing that confounding look roll onto my opponents flushed face as my jamming sets my Tuite in an effective motion.
  18. sensei8

    Kata

That's why I love what Soke pushed Dai-Soke to adhere to... "Rank do not say you learn a new Kata...I SAY WHEN!! Not rank...not you...not nobody!!" That can be hard to get behind because we seem to want what we want whenever we want it; the sooner and better.
  19. Great posts, all, thus far; please keep them coming!! Thank you, all!! What Kihon/Methodology/ideology, or your MA styles equivalent, isn't important?? Let's get real deep in this; we've scratched the surface, and our knowledge/experience pool, here at KF, is way, way, deep.
  20. Fame and Fortune... Fair enough. Allow me to ask somewhat differently.... What's not important, things that are specific MA related, in the MA??
  21. Other than rank, I would like to propose a question, if I might. We determine from time to time as to exactly what's important and what's not important, no matter what that might be, and I believe that we reserve the right, as well as the integrity, to decide of our own accord. What's not important in the MA, minus rank??
  22. Every dojo needs those down days, even if they're caused by outside forces. Well, there's practice at home.
  23. Kumite as often as you breath...and then some!! Not just Kumite endlessly, but these suggestions... 1) Against those who are much more adept than you in Kumite. 2) Drill, while engaging in Kumite, with those areas that trouble you the most. 3) Face any fears that you might have within the scope of Kumite 4) Be terribly honest with yourself across the board What I've suggested above, is exactly what I've done with my students who experience similar difficulties involving Kumite. What I might be suggesting could seem quite unfeeling and harsh, but they're meant to help them to improve their MA betterment. Dai-Soke was always expressing this to everyone when they were struggling... "You are not mature in your Karate-do. When you become mature in your Karate-do, you'll be effective. Find that maturity, and find it soon" Well, soon can be a very long trying road, full of many potholes, yet, repairable...in time. Those words for me, when I first heard them, and when I often heard them, for quite a long time, were very difficult to swallow. However, one can only take so many bricks to their thick skull before they start figuring just how to no longer be struck with bricks anymore...and they/we/I finally did, for the sake of our MA betterment.
