Any C.S. Kim Students Here?
granitemiller replied to tsdprime93's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
They are having a tournament on 5/2 in Pittsburgh (Univ. of Pittsburgh), here is the URL: http://www.cskimkarate.com/web/News/Tournaments/tabid/579/Default.aspx -
Is today's Karate representative of the original concept?
granitemiller replied to RW's topic in Karate
In the study of the bunkai of katas, you will find numerous stikes, throws, clinches, etc, which hold fast to the original concepts. Kumite is more or less a sport in that it has rules so that you can practice executing techniques without seriously harming your partner. Therefore, many different rules have developed for different systems. -
Kicho Pinan 1-5 Kibon Tekki 1, 2, 3 Chinte Bassai Sho, Dai Gojushijo Empi

The more you train in kata bunkai, the more you come to appreciate them.

Becoming a better fighter and better at defending yourself is of course one of the benefits and results, it is a martial art. However, I think the ultimate goal is to better oneself thru martial arts.

Should young black belts instruct the adult class
granitemiller replied to granitemiller's topic in Karate
Some younger people are, but sometimes it also goes to their head and that is where the problems start. -
the beast stated it perfectly. The true goal of martial arts is to become better human beings, a belt color will not help someone with this.

Interesting style, how is it going are you still doing it?

Help me find a hard style with sparring to compliment Aikido
granitemiller replied to signalnoise's topic in Karate
Wado and other karate schools do point sparring, but there are also ippon kumite and kyokushin style sparring that are offered. You should speak to the instructor at the school to see what they offer. -
A good quality belt that is frayed is ok

What Dan Level is appropriate for instructing?
granitemiller replied to granitemiller's topic in Karate
I would saying leading the class -
There is no issue with practicing martial arts.

he is just a good fighter, I know people like that. If he likes to fight, there are plenty of places he can go and meet up with others just like him. If he wants to be a real black belt, he will need to swallow his pride and join a school and go through the program. Easier said than done for people like this.

Would you say that Hapkido is more in line with a TangSooDo Korean art than it is to Aikido/Aikijutsu? I took Aikido for a semester while in college. Found it very interesting. I have just started learning Aikijutsu - it is similar to Aikido in the joint locks. Have not taken it long enough to form any type of opinion.
