  1. Actually JoeSteph, I have never splinted it at anytime that it was injured. I do have great mobilitiy and one ugly knuckle. Years ago while training in Kung Fu, our instructor would have us punch into a crate of rocks. The injuries to my knuckles happened over and over. ( At least I learned to strike using the correct knuckles). As of this morning, there is very little discomfort, unless I bump it. Bruising looks better. Think I may have saved it from any fracture this time. No sense on getting any xrays, I wouldnt do anything different if I found out there was or wasnt a bone injury.
  2. Thanks for the concern everyone. It is a fractured 2nd knuckle on my right hand. I have chosen not to have it splinted. It has been fractured many times before. The multiple injuries have made it easy to break. I'm not really sure how much of a knuckle is actually there now. Injury occured while punching through boards. I have lived with it before and there really isnt even any pain. I am stubborn in that I need to be able to work. I am a nurse in an ER and I need my right hand. So no splinting.
  3. Took me nearly 3 years, but at that time I was attending every class offered 4 nights a week and Saturdays (ended up being like 18 classes a week). The average person at our dojo is usually ready to test after 4 - 5 years. That is attending 2 classes a week.
  4. I too take Shotokan. I love it. I also have superstitions. I love the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres. LOVE!!!!!!!!! If while watching the game, a commentator says, "The Bills/Sabres have neer.... " then I believe that it automatically means that it will happen. Stupid commentators. Just report the current game, not the nevers. Anyways, I love training. Broke my hand at Thursday's class. Going to class on Monday. I don't care. Nothing can keep me from going. Not any superstitions, not any naysayers (which I have some). I have been told that I am getting too old and should quit. I am 36. I don't think that I am too old. I have been told that bruises on a woman are not very becoming. Well I don't care. I am going. Nothing is going to keep me from my goal to just keep going.
  5. It really does go against the principle of what all martial arts are based on. Too bad. I wish him a loss in this alleged event.
  6. Shotokan, I hope you did take Ethan to classes. It will definitely benefit him. He will learn when he is allowed to use force and when he is not allowed. Just one suggestion, I would not participate in assisting in classes. Let him have his time with the head instructor. His focus will be better and his response to the instructor will be more appropriate. Ethan is very young and he will not seperate mommy at the dojo from mommy at home. We have had parents teaching or assisting with their own children at our dojo and 9 times out of 10, those kids would not listen to anyone, including the head instructor. The children see mom or dad there and when confronted by another authority figure, the child thinks, "you are not my mom/dad." My instructor has actually now prohibited parents from taking or assisting in classes that their children take. I didnt think it would make a difference in the behavior of the child, but is really did.
  7. It still sounds like you did very well. What rank were you testing for anyways? If you had to do 14 kata, you must have been going for a more advanced rank. I wish all students had the same mental attitude you have. No sense on getting upset, just chalk it up as experience and keep going.
  8. So is he saying his students are not athletes? I agree there is something to pressure points, but this guy is full of himself. Think I will stick with my own training.
  9. Clear your mind of the politics in your rank testing. Focus on what you have to do to improve and retake the test when it was offered to you. So what if there are sensei's there that don't "like you". You are training for you, not them. If you enjoy what you are doing, stick with it. We all have been there and sympathize with you. Let me ask you however, as I do not know you and you do not know me, how do you present yourself in the dojo and to the others. What is it that would make them treat you differently. In a dojo, it is best to always give 100% (as I am sure you do), listen and learn. Ask questions that are appropriate and be open minded. Try never to disagree with an instructor in front of the whole class, or question them publically. I promise you that I do not know the kind of student you are, but to me, you seem like a serious student with a huge love for the style. I applaud you. I really only mentioned the above to benefit you and others who may be in a similar situation. Something in your training history has caused this silly political issue with some of your instructors, probably at no fault of you. However, its up to you to change their attitude or to just get past it all together. Either way, Just Train.
  10. It just feels great doesn't it? Congratulations.
  11. Why do you have to wait? It sounds like fun, but I would do it in an area that is not going to affect anyone that may find no humor or innocence in your fun. As long as you are on a large property with permission of the owners and are not causing any harm to person or property, you should be able to have your ninja friday. You are only a kid for a little while. Have fun.
  12. We rented it this past weekend and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. We laughed alot. To be fair however, I really like Napolean Dynamite and movies similar to that style. I love how he swears at the dojang and at the kids. Trust me I would never do condone that behavior, but thats what makes it so funny. No instructor would teach his students this way.
  13. A martial artist's journey is and has to be one of the most personal journey's one can take. I agree with many others that there are times that one will question their own rank and the technique of others. You have to learn to get past that kind of thinking. If you are happy with your head instructors ability to teach a style and you are giving 100%, then you should not worry about what others are doing. The mind, spirit, and integrity of each individual who wears a black belt is different than that of the person standing next to him/her in line. You cannot judge your rank to other students. Your own personal goals and challenges are going to be different than theirs. I love my style. I think my instructor is great. Sure, I think that there are people in my class who don't value their training as much as I do. That's ok. Im not taking Karate to compare myself to them. I am taking Karate to be a better person. I think that I do ok. I never give up and never think that my technique is at its best or better than others. To sum it up, if you are happy. Stay. Judge only your own personal training. If you think you are not ready to test, just say so. It really is that easy.
  14. That would be my luck. Make a dumb mistake and it ends up on Youtube! Poor guy.
  15. Glad you are feeling more comfortable with your very deserved rank.
  16. That is awesome, but it scares me that they let her knock you out. My gosh, that is a head injury. I know back when we were young and training, that was the way things were. Now, working in the ER as long as i have and seeing young people come in with brain hemorrages after a head injury scares the you know what out of me. Thank goodness you lesson learned didnt leave you with a permanent injury.
  17. I was laughing out loud while watching that video.
  18. I have to say in your original post I caught the "all I do is teach for him." Where is his loyalty to you? He may be a mentor and done alot for you, but in the end, is he loyal to you as a senior student? The other thing that caught my attention was the fact that the other school wants you to break from him. Why? There must be a reason behind that stipulation. As others have said, sit down and talk to him. Good luck.
  19. It is better for girls to learn to stick up for themselves early in life, because reality is... this is still a man's world, and she isn't always going to have a dad or a big brother there to stick up for her. Don't get me wrong, women have made strides in the past years, but they had to fight there way there. I by no means am a feminist. I am just happy when a little girl takes it upon herself to not be bullied by anyone. I apologize to any man on here that may take offense to anything I have said. Just as a women does not know what it is like to be a man, a man has no idea at times how hard it is to be a woman.
  20. I just love to train! The best is when you leave with bruises and just physically tired. It is awesome.
  21. I read your initial post and laughed out loud. She sounds alot like me at that age. I did the same thing at a tournament when I was 13. A boy I was fighting, (my same age) kept making hits that by rules, should not be allowed: kicking low, contact to head, excessive contact... None of the judges stopped it. I wouldn't have minded it, but they were not allowing these same hits in previous matches. Difference, this was 20 something years ago and I was the only girl in the whole group. So I decided to take it upon myself and show them that I wasn't going to be bullied by this little kid or by them. I had a place in Martial Arts and it was established that day. When he came rushing in, I did a step through side kick in the chest that lifted him and knocked him to the edge of the ring. I went over and helped him up, bowed to him and then I got disqualified. I was proud of myself. That kid came over later and apologized and then he said, great kick! I apologized to him too.
  22. I am a female and have been a part of my dojo for quite sometime. Of course, when I started as a white belt, other upper rank men and woman sparred me with some hesitancy and no contact - once. They didn't know that I had a black belt in another style. Once they saw that I was blocking and striking with some accuracy, they picked up their pace. I at this point, am still the only black belt adult female in our school. There are plenty of black belt men. They do a good job at treating me equally. The best was last night when my instructor was using me for a partner to teach a kumite drill. He was REALLY hitting me. I remember thinking - "this is great!" I had so much fun and some pain He treated me (as always) the way he treats everyone. I appreciate that. Most woman do. Now we have had woman in class who do not want that elevated level of contact. You figure it out right away.
  23. I do know some schools have Saturday classes. The downside to that is it is many times mixed ages. However, I loved having the morning class on Saturday. It was a great way to start the day. We did try having a 3rd shift class twice a week. We didn't have a huge interest in our area and it ended up costing more to have the school open that 2 hours than it was worth.
  24. I always encourage them to talk to him specifically about their situation. I usually check up with them the following day or two to see if they had. Then I usually go to my instructor for them. I have to admit, he intimidated me too for awhile, but then I started working for him. Found that he is a very nice man. As long as I can be there for him and his wife and the other students, I am happy.
  25. It definitely does make sense. I always present myself to other students as being someone they can come to with any questions or problems. I try to be the "in between" for them and the head instructor. He is a very nice man and never acts as though he is unapproachable to his students. He just looks very military like and I believe he seems intimidating to many. I have told him this before (as many students tell me they are afraid to talk to him). He feels very bad about this and encourages students to come to him with anything, but they don't. So at least they come to me. I wonder if other instructors have had similar problems with this.
