  1. One way to have power in technique is to land your stance before blocking, striking..., which you do. The other is using reverse power in your upper extremities. When doing a punch with your right hand, pull your left gaurd or block or strike that is already extended, the exact same time you extend your opposite side. This will make strikes/blocks faster and with more power.
  2. That word would better be described as bettering.
  3. My teacher is the chief instructor of her own school, as a fourth dan in Soo Bahk Do. Twice a week, she sees her own teacher to continue her studies. She started at age ten, and is now twenty-five. This is likely the best time for her to continue, as, being in her twenties, she has time (and youth) on her side. She's still "hungry," and won't have to look back in the future to this time now, thinking to herself, "I should have . . ." I think that is great! My instructor is a 7th Dan and has trained for 25 years. (Obviously he is not in his 20's ) He still makes it a point to get to his own instructors school and train. His instructor still trains with his own instructor. Learning and betterining oneself is constant.
  4. If you are an instructor and have availablity to continue your own training, you should. Not only does it keep you a student, but it is great for your own motiviation.
  5. Well I wasnt drinking, but I was carrying a couple of gallons of milk. Instead of trying to stop myself, I saved the milk. Awesome.
  6. Patrick, I am a life long Bills fan. That is why I wanted the Dolphins to lose. Sorry. I wish next week for Pittsburgh to lose badly against the Ravens and would love to see the Cardinals take it to the Eagles.
  7. Hey, I am not 90 and I did a full split last week. Yep, slipped on the ice covered road and full split. I walked like I had been riding a horse for 3 days.
  8. Always have a lesson plan. Have fun, but try not to let things get silly. Is everyone starting at white belt, or are there varied ranks already in the class?
  9. That is disgusting. Our instructor not only would not allow that individual to compete, he/she would not be allowed to train with a uniform in that condition. I truly believe when you go to a competition, seminar... you are not only representing yourself, but your school, and instructor.
  10. The senior division is 35+ ? Darn.
  11. I think that for someone to have credibility to teach, they should be active in their own training. If an instructor is no longer training with his/her own instructor, they give the impression that they have mastered their style and are unteachable. He/she should always see themselves as students and they should be able to learn from their students. A good instructor should be able to keep you motivated to learn. If you are looking at the clock during your lesson to see when it will be over, you have lost your motivation. At the end of a lesson, you would hope that you were shown something to make your technique better, leaving you excited to go home and practice what you learned. A good instructor should never look at their own skill and feel that it is perfect. I could go on and on with what I think a credible instructor should be. I am very happy with my own training and my instructor. He has been training for 24 years. He continues to train with his instructor. I still look forward to going to class everyday. I can leave class at times with the "wow, I didn't know that' mentalitiy. I am a 3rd Dan and I still feel I have much to learn from him.
  12. I do not like the look of longer belts. When judging, I completely look at the bend in the knee. I am opposed to long belts and folded sleeves and pant legs that expose elbows and knees when bent. Some of the younger black belts in our school get long belts once they rank to black belt, but this is done so they can grow into the belt.
  13. I worked. yay. ER was busy too.
  14. Same as everyones, get more fit and tone. Eat better Lose weight. Read more books. Become smarter than a 5th grader.
  15. I love the Home Alone movies, but the funniest Christmas movie is National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
  16. Falcons - but I want the Cardinals to win. Hopefully the Colts Ravens - and they better really shame the dolphins. Philidelphia - I am not really sure how Minnesota got in anyways, but wish they would beat the Eagles.
  17. The best fantasy books I have read were the Shannara series from Terry Brooks. There are several and it starts with the Sword of the Shannara. You can't put them down.
  18. 2009! A year of hope. This country will get stronger.
  19. That is so cute! Popular video tube, with over 1,000,000 hits.
  20. Myself as a Martial Artist and a woman, I have to recognize my own strengths and weaknesses. No, I am probably not going to be stronger than a possible attacker, but I have been trained to find weaknesses on the attacker to bring him to my level and then down. I also know that in a self defense situation, once I have defended myself, I am not going to stick around to see if he gets up. I consistantly train in situations where my attacker is much stronger than me and prepare for what I would do to defend myself. I do care of conditioning, but realistically, I could lift weights everyday of my life and I am still not going to be stronger than the crazed individual who is attacking me. Proper training, accurate strikes, and realistic thinking about oneself's abilities is what I focus to work for me.
  21. Oh, we do not have any 8 year old 3rd degree black belts. Thank goodness.
  22. How does an 8 year old become a 3rd degree Black Belt. It took me longer than he has been alive to become a San Dan! Oh well, I wish I could say that this is not happening at my own school, but it is. Kids are ranking to Black Belt that are not deserving. However, those kids also leave after getting their Shodan rank. The ones who stick around are the white belts that never quit.
  23. That is too bad, but I have seen this before. Trust me, if they are doing this for her at your dojo, they are doing it in other areas of her life, including school.
  24. I have always been a huge fan of Bugs Bunny. I find myself watching That's so Raven, Spongebob, and Fairly Odd Parents.
