  1. Been a while since I posted. So recent times, I got in to keto diets and surprisingly enough, its pretty darn good! Like I noticed use of carbs and fat is a moving target. If I carb up, I can go without carbs for few days and feel incredible if glycogen is full like having a dinner party but then I need to fill in my glycogen with carbs again. But I just noticed that this is a new dimension in to my karate training. Also I have been really working on my Himokiri Karate or should I say lots and lots of Nukite and I noticed its getting significantly better and actually training nukite really helps with accuracy in boxing and throwing punches straight down the pipe and the diet does help because you feel calm energy and I feel more of a relaxed/less excited and so I end up focused more on accuracy and laser focus strikes vs volume work. One important thing to mention is, I ease up on meat consumption. Still consume it but not in excess. I love to hear if any karateka has tried keto diets before? If so what did you eat? How did you feel? What did your karate turn in to?

  2. Not quite sure how the black belt in judo would have any impact on TKD tbh (other that maybe comfort in a competitive setting) so don't see why it would need to be disclosed. I have always liked the BJJ way of dealing with other grappling arts tbh: it is convention over here that if someone is judo BB and enters a BJJ tournament they enter as a Blue Belt as a minimum due to experience. Karate, kickboxing etc. grades don't matter as it is a totally different fighting style. I try to do the same when it is a related style: when i came back to karate a couple of years ago i told the instructors my prior experiences in other styles and whenever i was sparring with someone new i would let them know (often the instructor did too) that i had prior experience in other striking styles (including karate) and whilst i was wearing a white or low kyu belt they could spar harder. I did the same at my judo club before any newaza. But didn't bother mentioning any striking experience as it didn't seem relevant. For me the rule of thumb would be: is the competition using a similar skillset to one you have acquired elsewhere and have been assessed to a higher level of competency that in the style you are competing in? If yes then needs declared to the comp organisers and let them decide how to deal with it. If no then it's irrelevant and if in doubt then check.

  3. Thank you for sharing! Kobudo is rarely looked at through a practical lens, since most people are not carrying around bo, sai, tonfa, etc. on a daily basis for self-defense (although many of the techniques for those weapons can be transferred to other, everyday items). Nunchaku are especially neglected on this front, as they typically get more exposure as tricking implements than actual weapons. While I didn't learn these particular applications for the nunchaku, my late Sensei did teach a number of grappling techniques using them, implementing them for leverage and pain compliance, similar to what you have going on in this video, in addition to their striking applications.

  4. I was amongst the unhappy fans about Goodell’s SB announcement. It’s their product and they’ve the right to market it any way they feel fit to. Money speaks in volumes and is the root of evil. Putting SB on a PPV is as evil as it gets. I suppose only the rich are to enjoy PLE and not anyone else. How rich do the rich need to be?!? There’s no affordable PLE sports and entertainment in Las Vegas, or any where else!!

  6. There can be many reasons to find lying about rank objectionable depending on perspective. If it’s done at a competitive event, it is a form of cheating. Much like a pro athlete passing off as an amateur just to compete in a local level tournament. Anyone with a sense of fairplay would justly call cheat/fraud.

  7. For sure man, I sometimes do raw vegetarian cleanse on and off but I said to myself, why not try keto, I feel like even with fruits and honey, I feel like I am taking in a bit too much sugar and carbs so I did keto to balance things out and my god it was AMAZING! Like with keto flat bread, I made pizza, burritos, quesadilla and sandwiches. One thing I noticed is, I feel full, no crazy energy but no crash. Food is super delicious and when I put back on the gi and tighten the karate belt, I dont feel bloated at all. Like I dont feel a gut sticking out. At hot yoga, few people are saying I look way thinner. One thing is, I am trying to eat less meat on keto. But even with meat, I still feel pretty darn good. Give it a try and let me know. Also no starvation or going to bed hungry or with a headache either. Occasional Nutella craving will kick in but everything is smooth sailing.

  8. I have not tired it but am now going to give it consideration after this post. I am especially interested in the carbs aspect. My diet is too carbs heavy, though it is better than it once was, it can be improved further. Thanks for the post

  9. Seeing that it’s a TKD tournament, and that student has a green belt in TKD, I’d say that that student should wear a green belt, but at the same time, that student should inform the Arbitrator that they have a black belt in Judo, for integrity sake, and allow the Arbitrator to make the proper decision.

  10. My first student was my child. Unless you want a more philosophical answer, in which case I was my first student.

  11. There was a lot going on with this testing, even though it wasn’t one of the bigger testings. Here’s the big one: We had a 2nd dan, who is the daughter of the CI, managed to get herself bumped from 2nd dan back low brown belt due to some…respect issues; not with everyone in the school, but more along the lines of father/daughter dynamics. When your are father/daughter at home and then come to class, it can be difficult for kids to switch to the instructor/student dynamic. I never got the exact story of what took place to cause the rank stripping, but that’s the gist of what caused it. That 2nd dan in-a-brown belt had to test on the three brown belt levels to get back to her 2nd dan rank, and today marked her finish of that journey. She was basically doing the 1st dan testing all over again as a skunk belt; all forms, all one-steps, sparring, board breaks, and writing the essay again and reading it aloud before testing. She has matured a lot, and it was great to see. Ok, onto the performances. When I mention the 1st dan recommended, she’s the one I’m referencing. 1st dan rec: good power in Do-Gons. She made her low rank forms look like black belt forms. Great power, technique, focus, etc. She had a few brief memory hiccups, but nothing terribly egregious. During a sparring match with an orange belt, she worked with them, helping them out. White belts: good stances, transitions, and power in their form. In one-steps, their distancing was pretty good, but their stances needed focus. I see this often in one-steps at the lower levels; the students are worried about blocking a technique, where their targets are, and everything going on up high that they forget about what their legs are doing in the stances down low. The group of white belts looked very good sparring. Orange belts: needed to clean up stances a little bit, along with some transitions to front stances. The forms have some more difficult transitions, which add to this. The square blocks needed some correction. I told them not to rush their one-steps. In sparring, the orange belts need to work on their blocking skills some more. I’ve had them working on drills in sparring class to help with this. I see too much “fencing,” where low rank students are trying to block everything with their lead hand. One of the high orange belts is quite flexible, and it I asked her to show that more in forms, one-steps, and sparring. Overall, all the students showed great power in their forms, and I told them to keep it up. I asked them to add focus, and to concentrate on the stances and transitions. At the end of testing when handing out belts, the CI got a bit choked up giving his daughter back her rank, and didn't quite have his thought sorted yet. I stepped in and told her that when something like that happens, a person can handle it a couple of ways. One, they can just quit and not deal with it. Or two, they can take responsibility, hold themselves accountable, and get better. She chose the latter, and that has made all the difference. The CI was able to gather his thoughts and summed up how proud he was of her, and they both had some tears. I made them hug it out before breaking the testing.

  12. I just want to mention that this story is NOT true. I sincerely apologize for having not have taking the necessary time to find out if the story was or wasn’t true.

  13. Bills vs Dolphins has the possibility of being a tight game, but I'd lean Bills. With Fields likely out vs the Buccaneers, Bucs seems the more certain pick.

  16. The group I train with took a crack at interpreting Kobu Nunchaku and I think we came up with some good stuff. I made a video to demonstrate the beginning section. I can make videos of the other sections if people are interested. I'd love to hear any questions, comments, or even snide remarks. Thanks. Here's the whole kata performed by Nishiuchi Mikio Shihan

  17. Think of the nunchaku as a sort of "nut cracker", but with a rope/chain. There's an incredible amount of potential power there. Any traditional art that uses the nunchaku in its arsenal should be able to show you.

  19. My Aikido instructor is looking into getting some HEMA equipment to test out with jo and bokken. If you're going to start looking, HEMA would be the way to go, as they focus on re-creation of Western European weapons styles.

  22. I’m at the highest rank that I can ever achieve. With that, I’ll be at Hachidan for the rest of my life!! Yes…I know my current rank is Kudan. However, I earned Hachidan under Dai-Soke, which I embrace far more than my Kudan, which was earned under the SKKA Hierarchy, and under my very strong protest.

  23. OMG!!!WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? NO FINGERTIP SPINNING??? NO HOLDING THE "CHUCKS" CLOSE TO THE ROPE??? NO FLIPS? Are you telling me there's somebody that can hold and move a nunchaku properly??? *THUD* Is there no end to the madness when somebody does a weapon properly???

  24. I would suspect that in whatever way that he learns it as a solo practitioner, that he could learn the reason for the movements. At every club i've trained at and have good relationships with some instructors who have gone and opened their own clubs. And we do two things with the explanation of the movements for katas; Bunkai and Kyogi. So Bunkai is obviously our Clubs explanation for the kata, and Kyogi are our students explanation for the kata. Recently I have taught someone a kata, and until they can train with someone who can help teach them the bunkai they can find their own explanation. Also the upside of Kyogi, since its the students own creation they can use anyone as a partner. Defender tells attacker what to do.

  25. I was talking about AI the other day with someone and how music is now being created by AI. The lyrics, the signing voice, it all sounds like a professional musician recorded the song, but there is no artist, it is a computer. He said to me "I will never understand humans. I can't believe we are smart enough to create this type of technology, but stupid enough to allow it to replace us."

  26. Thats a good plan; the only thing i'd say if you want to improve your Bloods is: - Remove unnecessary sugars (Soda*, Energy drinks and majority of the 'moderation' category) - *Soda: I don't know if you have it where you are, but Soda Water (its just fizzy water without additives - you can make it with a Soda Stream). It is great to have without all the sugars and other stuff that's in Soda (Like Coke, fanta etc). I just noticed though that you have it already as Carbonated Water! Keeping your Hba1c (3 month maker of glucose attaching to bloods) down is a big one; which doctors tend to look at along with how you go with testing your blood sugars at the time of the blood draw. So as you go without the extra sugary things (I know US foods and drinks can be notorious for it) long term; you can reduce the risk of running into Type 2 Diabetes. I admit I had to convert gallons to litres (yay metric system); 1.89L throughout the days seems like a reasonable amount to have if your not as active throughout the day. But like most of us, 1.8L may not be sufficient. When I was in the Pallet Racking World; cold days i'd have 2 Litres easily on hot days >4L. then throw in training; where i'd have a further 2L. I can understand why you are inspired to do something similar to an athlete; but you do need to remember that he is an a Professional Athlete who trains 5-6 days/week + 1 Match weekly for 20-30 weeks of the year. And you aren't in that position. One thing I have noticed when people do a "new" diet is that they do one that doesn't work for their body.
