ad
hey all ive always had this problem, that whenever training with a partner using focus pads or using a heavy punch bag, uppercuts just never seem to come out right, i always tend to curl and bend my wrist inwards, when i do them which i know thyey have the added risk of me breaking it if i go in too hard. I try to exaggerate the straight wrist motion to avoid bending it but the uppercut just doesnt come out write with no sense of power or delivery. This seems to be a particualr problem with my weaker right hand. Is there any advice or recommendations that i should take into account in order to perfect the uppercut? Squawman
It sounds like you are using too much arm. You might be moving your arm out away from your body too much which means your palm will strike first and to compensate for that you are bending your wrist to hit the correct knuckles. Do some shadow boxing in the mirror to see where your hands are positioned. Your hands should be right by your jaw and when you go to throw the uppercut just move your hand away from your face a little bit and then punch straight up. Remember to use your body too by bending your knees and pushing off, you only have so much power in your arms so you have to use your body. ad
yeah thanx for advice, i will try to shadow box and i will try to use my body and knees rather more arm. But you mention to keep the fist near fist face height, as if uppercutting to the face. I am actually more interested in uppercutting the the body and ribs. in which case the uppercut needs to be close to the ribs and abs than the face which you suggested Brown Sash Hsing I/Lau Gar Kung FuBrown Belt San Shou17 yr oldhttp://www.selfdefencehelp.co.uk
delta1
Could also be the way the pad holder holds the pads. But I've generally found the same problems as you in doing uppercuts to the chin. The only way I've found to cure the problem is to get the target right and a lot of practice, concentrating on form and structure. I really prefer heal palm strikes to the chin, and keep my uppercuts to the abdomen where I have better structure and back up mass. (I know, some of you don't think an uppercut goes anywhere but the chin. Same punch, but without the rise- call it what you want.) The heel palm to the chin uses the same basic form as the uppercut punch, but torques into the target. Since the wrist effectively takes the force of the blow, it eliminates the problem of weak structural allignment there. You can also more easily flow into another strike without any rechamber. Not saying the uppercut isn't good, or shouldn't be practiced. Just an alternative, or another option. Freedom isn't free!
cross
The uppercut is usually used from close distance and the hand doesnt go very far out from the body. Make sure you are not "reaching" when you do it.
ad
hey, again thanx for the advice. Ive seemed to have been using my punch bag at off and on times in the past few months, i would think that once i start to train more, and concentrating on body movement and form i should see a more stable and powerful delivery from the uppercut Brown Sash Hsing I/Lau Gar Kung FuBrown Belt San Shou17 yr oldhttp://www.selfdefencehelp.co.uk
