Icetuete Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 ok - imagine a guy states as follows (in short): 1. stretching is a waste of time 2. its better not to stretch before doing sports, as a warm up so to speak 3. stretching does not make u more flexible the arguments are: 1. there have been discussions about the sense and effect of stretching when he was young. 2. newest studies indicate that he is right. any opinions?
But_Why Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 I disagree. Stretching is not a waste of time. Its good for injury prevention. Think of it like putting oil in your car. No oil and your car will sieze, no stretching and the next day you could sieze up. well thats what i tend to find anyway As to whether it or not it makes you more flexible, i'd say it does... like i don't just do static stretching for flexibility. I'm finding (through advice from my sensei) that dynamic stretching is much better for that. just my 2c
But_Why Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 Oh and stretching as a warm up is not, IMHO, the best way. I reckon you should warm up first lightly, then stretch.
Tibby Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 1. 1. When you are young , you can get away with not stretching. But you still need to stretch, it avoid injury. 2. He is right, it isn’t good to stretch as a warm up, because Stretching and Warming up are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!!!!!!!!!! “Newest studies” as well as older studies prove this. You should do both, not one or the other. 3. Yes, it does. I don’t know where he got this. If Stretching doesn’t make you flexible, then what does? He sounds like a moron. Ask to see these “newest studies” Where does he get this stuff? Muscle and Fiction!?
OldRookie Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 IMHO-stretching is very helpful in MA & I try to stretch every day...Of course I am one of the "Geezers" at my dojang so I have that "use it or lose it" thing working against me. I can't just drop down to full splits cold.-- ALWAYS warm up 1st before you start to stretch (your hamstrings will thank you for it..) *1st Dan Oct 2004*"Progress lies not enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be.""It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them."
GrrrArg Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 Dynamic stretching will cause your muscles to react in a protective manner and shorten their range of movement in the long run - making you less flexible.
Mole78 Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I think Bill Wallace would dispute that. Keep an open mind
Thuggish Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard. every athlete in the world will tell you the opposite- and that's what a "study" i'd trust. your guy with those arguments either really hates stretching, misheard something, or believes anything he reads. but then, if you wanna prove him wrong, let him go without stretching for a while, maybe a year... then see how flexible he is and how many times hes been injured, and so on. a broken arm throws no punches
Icetuete Posted August 10, 2003 Author Posted August 10, 2003 he is neither an athlete nor very flexible. its my sportsteacher in school he thinks he is right about anything and does not wish to discuss things.
Tibby Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 "sportsteacher"? What is that? Is it like a coach? Or is it some health class teacher?
