aphal Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 hi again, i've decided to lose weight some time ago, and the first week i spent researching and trying to actually find my motivation. but now i'm curious about something. i was wondering if walking everyday for 40 minutes would actually make me lose weight? or must i jog/run? has anyone ever sucessfully lost weight just by walking and with proper diet? thank you your reply will greatly be appreciated!
Tibby Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Yes, my father has. He walks all the time. He walks 5 miles every day, on the days he can. As a medical Professional, I think eh would know if it was unsound. Go head and walk, but remember, your going to have to walk MORE then if you jogged.
iolair Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I think you burn about the same amount of calories if you go (say) 5 miles, no matter whether you walk it, jog it or run it. Walking takes more time, but on the other hand low intensity exercise tends to utilise fat stores more compared to glycogen stores - good if you want to lose weight. Also, you're rather less likely to develop joint problems walking. Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

Red J Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 My father has walked for years and has seen the benefits. He really moves (his pace is faster than some people jog). No leisurely stroll. By moving and getting your heart rate up, you will get the maximum benefit (calories and cardio). You may want to check out a heart rate monitor. I know several runners/walkers that swear by them. good luck. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
boxeador Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Walking is a very good exersize, another benefit of walking over jogging is its alot less stressful on your knees which is a good thing.
hobz Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Also, meaning no offense, if you're fairly obese, walking can be something you can do to gradually work up to jogging or running. Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences.
Thuggish Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 walking doesnt burn as many calories as running if you go the same distance, not at all. i can walk a mile and burn virtually none. if i run it in six or seven minutes, believe me ive burnt plenty more. you exert yourself more, the harder you run. you do of course have to work your body for a certain amount of time before any fat is burned, and im not discrediting walking- it is good for you. (and god knows america wouldnt be so damn fat if everyone would just walk a mile or two a day.) but still, jogging a mile or two a day will do more for you. a broken arm throws no punches
kchenault Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Walking is a good way to ease into an exercise regimen. It will take you longer to lose the weight and inches though. Running and jogging do burn more calories than walking. Ken ChenaultTFT - It does a body good!
