oldtimer Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Can anyone point me to a grading syllabus for goju-kai. In particular, I am trying to find where (if at all) a leg throw - similar to kami basami - fits in. Many thanks
Tempest Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 I am not really a Karate guy, but this is what I was able to find for a Goju grading syllabus. It seems legit based on the about a year of Goju I did a LONG time ago. I have never seen anything on a Karate syllabus to includeKani-Basami, but I HAVE seen my Goju instructor do what he called a scissor kick, which would look similar to kani but would score by kicking uke in the chest instead of by taking him to the ground.Kyu Ranking Required Techniques *10th KyuWhite belt plus stripesJodan, Chudan, Gedan ZukiJodan, Chudan, Gedan UkeMae-Geri, Mawashi-Geri9th KyuYellowRequirements for 10th Kyu plus:Gekisai Dai Ichi kata (sequence)simple moving basicsUraken-Uchi, Hiji-ate,8th KyuOrangeRequirements for 9th Kyu plus:Gekisai Dai Ichi (good kata) Bunkai.Gekisai Dai Ni kata (sequence)Hiki-Uke, Yoko-geri, Ushiro-Geri, San dan gi7th KyuGreenRequirements for 8th Kyu plus:All basic techniques**Gekasai dai ni katasimple combination moving basics, Kumite, yaksoku kumite6th KyuBlueRequirements for 7th Kyu plus:Saifa kata & Gekasai dai ni bunkaiRenzoku bunzai gekasai dai ichi5th KyuPurpleRequirements for 6th Kyu plus:Saifa kata and bunkai, sanchin4th KyuPurple and white stripeRequirements for 5th Kyu plus:Seiyunchin kata3rd KyuBrownRequirements for 4th Kyu plus:Seiyunchin kata and bunkai2nd KyuBrown 1 black stripeRequirements for 3rd Kyu plus:Shisochin kata,1st KyuBrown 2 black stripesRequirements for 2nd Kyu plus:Shisochin kata and bunkai Think first, act second, and stop getting the two confused.
GojuRyu Bahrain Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Can anyone point me to a grading syllabus for goju-kai. In particular, I am trying to find where (if at all) a leg throw - similar to kami basami - fits in. Many thanksI am not with the Goju Kai but have years in Yuishinkan Goju Ryu, which is somewhat close (Osaka based). So I am not sure if Goju Kai includes throws specifically... Our founder (Kisaki) included 24 formalized Nage Waza, but none equivalent to the Kami Basami (had to youtube it to be sure: its the "scissors" takedown). Some leg sweeps are part of our curriculum, though, and 2 -3 throws must be demonstrated as part of our gradings. I have occasionally practiced the scissors throw...but not often and then just for fun. Generally, we are not too fond of "sacrifice" throws where both (you and the opponent) end up on the ground. ------------Goju Ryu (Yushinkan since 1989), Shotokan (JKA since 2005)
Nidan Melbourne Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 I'm not sure sorry if it is available online, and i'm coming from a Goju-Kai Lineage.
Dani_001 Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Leg throw, not familiar. in which kyu? Uphold the Budo spirit and nothing will overcome you!
Karate_John Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Also sorry, not available online to my knowledge. But in my system (urban based with goju-ki influence), it would be around 3rd-1st kyu (Brown belt level techniques). Part of the Ippon Kumite curriculum.
