Nidan Melbourne Posted November 14, 2016 Share Posted November 14, 2016 my dojo hasn't done it yet over the last 9 years, because we rent our space in a Leisure Centre. But I would love to have this one day and hold it each term or once a semester. But have it mainly aimed towards the Kids and Teens. Many dojo's I know here in Aus do hold this type of thing but make it like a sleep over where they play games (board games, team games, wii games etc) and also watch a movie. Alan Armstrong Posted November 14, 2016 Share Posted November 14, 2016 "THE DOJO CINEMA"The idea sounds great for a MA flick night but realistically not sure of the attendance ratings.If the idea was perhaps geared towards appreciating and understanding other MA styles and cultures it might catch on.Or perhaps movies representing the best of the best in your own style might work. Could be part of way to raise money as a local charity event.TV stations often spotlight certain well known martial artists, as this is an on going theme where I live.If people were encouraged to look like the characters in the movie, this could catch on for a laugh; with cult type movies, people dress up for the movie and become part of the theatrical atmosphere. By great success I mean that our Movie Nights were a welcomed break from the usual. This is the one time when others were allowed on the floor with students, and not always was the subject of the movie MA based. One has to be careful as to the content of said movie because children will be viewing it as well. Adults viewed movies that we're going to be rated 'R', for example, Enter the Dragon. Enter the Dragon, is a MA movie classic but not for kids to watch, mainly because of nudity that can be seen from time to time.We watch the movies, MA or not, for the entertainment factor alone, and not used to teach the MA. For us, movie night is not part of any class. Usually on movie night, all night classes are cancelled, and this includes practice and the like!! **Proof is on the floor!!! It promotes the idea of the dojo being a family and a community rather than just a place to learn MA.I'd suggest having separate adult movies and family movies with all ages welcome at family movies and an age limit (maybe 13 when accompanied by an adult) for adult movies.For the family movies, things like Karate Kid and Kung Fu Panda come to mind.
