Karate_John Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I googled Gekisai Dai San and saw some videos. It looked like a blend of Sanchin in the beginning followed by Gekisai Dai Ni. That is a different variation, our variant goes forwards and backwards but doesn't turn left or right like Gekisai Ich or NiMy variation has the same pattern as Gekisai Ich and Ni, But uses different techniques and stances going forward and back.-Taikyoku Katas-Jodan ichiJodan ni (minor difference, Zenkutsu-dachi instead of Sanchin-dachi)Chudan ichiChudan niGedan ichiGedan niKake Uke ichiKake Uke ni (minor difference, Kake Uke forward and back)Mawashi Uke ichiMawashi Uke ni (also forward and back)Kongo dai ichi - (Org Only Combination Kata of Jodan/Chudan/Gedan ich)Kongo dai ni - (Org Only Combination Kata opposite side)Gekisai ichGekisai niGekisai sanFundamental & AdvancedSanchin ichi - YamaguchiSanchin ni - MiyagiSanchin san - I belive Higaonna Tensho ichiTensho ni - (variation, saw it ounce)SaifaSeiyunchinSanseru SeisanKuro WashiShisochin Kankaku Hira Benso Tenchi Seipai Kururunfa Hakutsuru Suparinpei Goju Ryu - ShodanMy MA Blog: http://gojublog.comPersonal Blog: http://zenerth.tumblr.com
Nidan Melbourne Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 I'm interested to know what you have for your school. What is the full list of kata you have for your school. Mine is as such: Curriculum: Taikyoku JodanTaikyou ChudanTaikyoku Gedan Taikyoku Kake Uke IchTaikyoku Mawashi Ich Gekesai Dai IchGekesai Dai Ni Sanchin Tensho SaifaSeeiunchin SanseruSeisanShisochinSeipaiKururunfa Suparempei Bonus: Gekesai Dai San. Not a required kata for any grade. For the Goju-Ryu people what extras do you have or not? For those who are curious or don't know, Goju-Ryu have 12 core kata which in my list above is Gekesai - Suparempei. The Taikyoku Kata were created by Miyagi Sensei to assist younger students due to the complexities of the more advanced kata. But not part of the coreTaikyoku kata were created by Gichin Funakoshi.I'm interested in Gekisai Dai San. Any video of it? Kyokushin and offshoots do Gekisai Sho. It's reportedly a Miyagi kata, but I highly doubt it is. Primary reason being I haven't heard of anyone doing Gekisai Sho outside of Kyokushin and offshoots. I've never heard of Gekisai Dai San until now. It may possibly be what we call Gekisai Sho.This is the variant of Gekesai Dai San my Dojo does: although our timing is rather different
Spartacus Maximus Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 The way instructors in Okinawa explained it, the Fukyu or Gekisai kata were specifically devised to promote karate locally and on a wider scale. There was and still is several occasions where karateka of all styles gather to train together and exchange. Those kata were made as something everyone could practise together in larger groups across the 3 main schools: Uechi ryu, Shorin ryu and Goju ryu. The pattern is generally the same and the techniques have only slight variations depending on the style. In recent years, practically all karate dojo practise some form of Fukyu kata or Gekisai.
Hawkmoon Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Kyokushin kata are not that different form any already listed. However in saying that not all Kykushin kata are taught in all Kyokushin dojos (an organisational thing, IKO 1 v IFK v ShinKyokushin v Seido and so on). Some like some of the one at the bottom of the following list are optional, as in you can if you wish or can but its not a critical requirement. So I've tried to list all that are available for grading requirements, but I'm sure I;ve missed at least a hand full, possibly more...
