So, most of my life, i've trained boxing and Muay Thai, and did BJJ, wrestling, ect. because I compete MMA.

Well over the last couple years, i've started to train Shotokan, to think out of the box, to try something different, and fell in love with it!

Well, I have a MMA fight Oct 17. My first fight in 4 years.

and I've decided, to embrace the Shotokan training and techniques, and am going to use that as (most, but not all) my striking base for this fight.

essentially, this will be a "trial by fire" to see how effective what i've been learning is.

I plan on cross training at a MMA gym, and not just my Shotokan school, to forge what I know, really start preparing it against other techniques, and to get ready to use it in a real fight.

Ill keep everyone updated if they're interested. I just would like to know, if anyone has any advice for me?

Best of luck to you!

My bit of advice may be hard considering it is an MMA match, but think and train defensively when applying karate. Force your opponent to feel as if they are making mistakes by advancing on you. Not force them to THINK it, force them to FEEL it, to KNOW it.

Turn everything they do into their mistake, but be humble and assume every strike they throw is a knockout/killing blow.

Perhaps watch videos of other fighters with karate backgrounds, such as GSP and Machida.

Understand that I have watched many MMA fights, but have no actual experience, and therefore know absolutely nothing about what actually goes on in a match in regards to pressure felt.

To search for the old is to understand the new.

The old, the new, this is a matter of time.

In all things man must have a clear mind.

I wish you the best of luck, and I look forward to seeing the video! I know MMA was a tough test for me, but since you've done it before, I imagine it will be a little less shocking :P. Still, I hope your karate training shines through!

By all means, good luck in your MMA fight, and I too, look forward in seeing your video.

Absorb what is useful; discard the rest. As Kanku65 said....

Perhaps watch videos of other fighters with karate backgrounds, such as GSP and Machida.

Watching these Shotokanists just might give you an idea how well they've fit into the scheme of the octagon.
