I was practicing horse stance, a bit deeper than usual, and I felt a sharp pain in an inner thigh muscle. It feels like I pulled something. Now, two days later, it's getting better but I still feel it. I've been avoiding squatting type motions because that makes it feel worse and I'm afraid of delaying recovery. I hope I'm feeling better for class tomorrow.

Has anyone else had this happen and what causes something like that? I'd like to avoid that happening again if I could. Are there any tips to speed recovery?

There is no such thing as speed recovery! The only type of recovery that should be occuring is rest and recovery!

Many of us have had this at some point or another. Usually it occurs because you have pushed your muscles too far.

So you may have just strained your muscles or just that they are very tight from you doing it.

You can't really avoid it because you will need to train to strengthen those muscles. Because your inner thighs people don't train all that often. So that could be what your feeling.

Pushed too far sounds reasonable. I did the exact same thing earlier in the day, and the previous day, with no problem then tried again later in the day with tired muscles.

I guess I avoid it by not pushing tired muscles into something they're not used to.

Sounds like you have pulled your groin or hip abductor muscles. Very common injury in martial arts. lots online about it.

As with most muscle injuries the P.R.I.C.E principle works as well as well as taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

(Price - Protection. Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation.)

if your at all concerned or it doesn't go in a few weeks see your doctor!

That which does not kill us, must have missed us.
