sensei8 Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 I've not the greatest constitution when it comes to looking at things like this; I'd make a lousy doctor. I pray that the doctor(s) have indicated to you that you're right on track in your healing process?? And after seeing what you're going through, I still believe that this ISN'T the end of your MA career. If anything else, it's just a mild setback, but a setback that's not permanent, imho. The floor is waiting for you, but, the floors not going to push you to return to the floor; time heals. Read MA related materials and the like to keep your mind focused away from the negative things that can cause doubt and depression when ones facing time off the floor like you are. Create a MA diary of this injury and note the things that you're doing to prepare you for the day when you return to the floor.Take care of yourself, and please, listen to your doctors; they do know what's best for you. **Proof is on the floor!!!

Ditto on all counts!!!Take care of yourself and don't give up on MA! This is your biggest belt test yet - listen to your doctors and come back when you're ready!! Nidan Melbourne Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 Since you've had major surgery make sure you take your time before returning to the mat, but also make sure you don't make excuses not to do your rehab. Work hard to complete your rehab and continually work on it to reduce the risk of injuring yourself again. But don't push it too hard straight away build up slowly
ozm8 Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 hey guys I just had surgery to get the plate and screws removed today and they said I'm allowed to walk with full weight bearings, but hurts a little, should I give it a try and go to karate this Thursday night?
sensei8 Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 hey guys I just had surgery to get the plate and screws removed today and they said I'm allowed to walk with full weight bearings, but hurts a little, should I give it a try and go to karate this Thursday night?Imho...NO!! Not until your doctor clears you for that type of activity!! Take your time, I know it sucks and you want to get onto the floor ASAP, but rushing it, imho, might cause you unknown problems to occur and/or make it where you'll never return to the floor. Please, ask your doctor, and then don't return UNTIL your doctor clears you. Even then, take it easy; work up to full abilities. If you're going to PT, as directed by your doctor, I'd go there before I went to the dojo. The floor is patient; it will welcome you back with open arms. However, the floor is a taskmaster; one that you're not ready for UNTIL your doctor clears you. You've waited this long, waiting a litter longer will benefit you in the long term. Please, don't rush it. You're not coming back from a sprained ankle...your injury is much more severe, and imho, much more severe injuries require patience through and through. Are you frustrated and/or impatient? Sure, you are, and that speaks loud and clear that you're a serious MA practitioner because you miss the training so much. Don't ever listen to me because I'm no doctor. Please listen to the medical professionals who are advising you, they're there to help you and I'm sure that they wouldn't rush you. Hang in there!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
mal103 Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 No!!!!!Wait, walk, gentle exercise until its stronger and no pain. Go back and watch maybe or to say hi but not to train
ozm8 Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 lol now I'm glad I didn't go because its starting to really hurt like its broken again. But my Doctor want me to use full weight bearing and apparently its supposed to hurt after being so long without using your foot/ankle.
Archimoto Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 No!!!!!Wait, walk, gentle exercise until its stronger and no pain. Go back and watch maybe or to say hi but not to trainExcellent advise.During a recent injury I was out for several weeks and with permission I attended class and simply watched. It was a great way to stay in touch and to learn. I also agree with Sensei8, NEVER train without your doctor's consent. Remember, your personal health is a big part of any martial art. Knowing when not to train, or to take it easy, is just as important as actively training. To quote the great Bob Marley: "LOVE IS MY RELIGION"
