Harkon72 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I have a lot on my plate at the moment, I need to support my family. My Sensei suggested at my pre-grade tonight that he might offer me a progressive grading for my next grade. That is I do my Kihon and Kata for part of my grade; then do my Kumite and Pad Work separetly afterwards and then be given my belt and grade after this assessment. Apparently the CMA in the UK do it in special circumstances. Has anyone else heard of a club doing this? Look to the far mountain and see all.
wagnerk Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) I've seen and heard of grading being done differently in various clubs, eg the grading spread over a couple/few days, there not being a formal grading (eg you're just assessed over the course of your training and you get awarded your next grade, then the standard grading). But to use the term "progressive grading", no... Edited March 10, 2014 by wagnerk Tang Soo Do: 3rd Dan '18Shotokan Karate: 2nd Dan '04
Nidan Melbourne Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I haven't heard of the term but I do know people who have graded over a span of weeks because of certain circumstances. they still got tested hard on each section, if they graded well in each section they passed.
Karate_John Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I haven't heard of the term ether, But Have seen a test done in parts over a few days for a Kyu rank in a rough spot. Kind of like you said Kihon and Kata on one day and Kumite the other. Goju Ryu - ShodanMy MA Blog: http://gojublog.comPersonal Blog: http://zenerth.tumblr.com
devil dog Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Have not heard of progressive grading but they may just be using their own term. Our Shodan tests are spread out over two days and sometimes three if the candidate can not complete all requirements in the time given. This sounds like what you are talking about. Kihon, History, Terminology, and 6 of the 19 kata, Makiwara on the first day. 8 kata, Bunkai (indepth explaination with their own interpretations to show depth of knowledge) and (Oyo), Yakusoku Kumite (Ippon, Nihon and Sanbon), and Jiyu (full contact) Kumite on the second day. Prior to the physical portion of the exam the candidate must write a detailed essay and submit it to the board for acceptance. This further tests the cadidates depth of knowledge. It's basically breaking down the test into bite size pieces to fit time constraints. When I was young this test would be a one day event but unless you were superman you wouldn't be worth much the following week and some student did not attend the following weeks classes so they could heal. Most candidates crawled out of the dojo and some still do even though it's broken down into two days. Devil DogGodanShorin ryu, goju ryu, isshin ryu, kobudo.
Harkon72 Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 I have my Belt! 3rd Kyu! A grueling grading! Killer Kata! Osu! Look to the far mountain and see all.
sensei8 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 While we don't use the terminology of Progressive Grading, we do use 'this' type of testing in our testing cycles, but, they're mostly for higher rank levels. Testing cycles that would last 3 days and the like to complete all of the necessary requirements of said testing cycle. One doesn't really know just how much one has to retain until ones on the floor for a testing cycle; it's mind-numbing!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
