Favorite grading that you have ever had?

Featured Replies

from all the years that you have trained and graded with that style what is your favorite grading that you have ever attended (as a candidate for promotion)?

Also for presentations for promotions what is your favorite?

and please state which martial art and style you do.

So my favorite was when i attempted for my shodan and ended up getting graded to nidan. and i do goju-ryu karate :karate:

They jumped you to nidan when you were grading for shodan? Wow I didn't realise that would be possible! Did you grade at your own school or at a grading event for your organisation?

at my school. My sensei had invited his old sensei to come help out and he (my sensei's sensei) thought i should be nidan not shodan

My favorite was when I tested for black. I was given the choice to test for "shodan-ho" or Shodan. I knew that I had the knowledge, but I had hurt my knee the night before helping my Sensei test 3 other people for black belt. However, I went in that morning and told him that I was either going to pass the test or die trying! And I actually aced the test!

2 of the students that have I have been training with are testing for Nidan this weekend, and I can't because it's a 2 day test, and I'll be out of pocket for the first day. I trained with my Sensei Friday night, and we went over most of what they will have to do, and I think I'll be okay. I trained with them Saturday morning, and I am pretty confident that I will be able to achieve the rank. Hopefully, in about a month, I'll have another story to tell!

I've had 4 favourite gradings:

1. 10th kyu in Shotokan - this was my first ever grading

2. 3rd Kyu (brown belt) in Shotokan - this was my halfway point and the ability to move up to the advanced classes.

3. 1st Dan in Shotokan - Reaching the start of my journey, the physical sickness of the grading and the ability to get that far.

4. 1st Dan in Tang Soo Do - The ability to get that far again with Sjogrins.

28+ years of training - and knowing the more I learn, the less I actually know...

Do you have to pay to attend Gradings or is it because you would have to travel a fair way to attend the grading?

I do have to pay for the grading (not very much though-black belt test was $75.00, but I received a trophy, embroidered belt, and new gi), but I live about 2 miles from my dojo. My son's birthday party and an event for my wife's family are keeping me from testing on Saturday. Otherwise, I'd be right there with my compadres!
