chrissyp
So, when I first started kickboxing, my coach was an old school full contact stylist...and when I told him I wanted to learn kickboxing, he made me learn traditional boxing before he'd go into more with the kickboxing.I'm just curious if anyone else was taught this way, and if so what they thought about it? wagnerk
No, the two associations that I trained with taught kickboxing from the start. Everyone learns, trains and teaches differently, if that's the way your instructor teaches, there's nothing wrong with that Tang Soo Do: 3rd Dan '18Shotokan Karate: 2nd Dan '
Nidan Melbourne
Like what wagnerk said there is nothing wrong with the way he teaches. Every instructor teaches differently in their MA. Like my sensei at my karate dojo teaches completely different to the sensei around the corner. Even though the techniques are the same (As the school around the corner is of the same style as mine) but we learn them differently.
TJ-Jitsu
Its neither right nor wrong- just a simple observation. The most important thing in a fight is learning how to get your hands up and protect yourself. Theres no need to focus on your kicks if you do not know how to do this. Boxing is a part of kickboxing, except until you get to sport specific techniques, details, and strategies. The first 6 months is basic stuff that will cross over to any style of fighting. sensei8
Got to understand the basics of boxing; that's what I believe your instructor was trying to instill. **Proof is on the floor!!!
