I know I'm probably gonna get blasted by asking such a stupid question, but its something I was pondering on the other day....FIRST off let me say that I know that doing any kind of MA technique is not a good idea if you havent properly stretched first....but my question is..have any of you guys/gals ever performed any of your kicks (not in full force but just kinda half power) while you WEREN'T stretched to see what your "range" is in case you ever got into a street fight or whatnot. I know in cases of fights that other factors come into play such as adreniline and whatnot....but I was curious if any of you ever tested to see what your "muscle memory" was. Like I said not full hard kicks or anything like that, but enough to test to see where you can place them without stretching. Again, I FULLY understand that this is probably a VERY stupid idea of doing something before properly stretching but I was just curious. Sorry for asking such a dumb question. Thanks.

It's not a dumb question, and I actually think that you can benefit from doing what you are doing. It is good to know what you are capable of doing, whether you are cold, warmed up, or pumped with adrenaline.

It is not a bad practice, but like anything, you just have to make sure you do it right.

I used to be able to kick high and fast right out of the box, with no warm-up. However, times have changed, and I am older, and I find I must warm-up more now than I used to.

Well, I can kick most peoples heads easily since I am 6'7" but in a fight the highest I would kick would be to the abdomen.

I don't think it's dumb at all. When working out at home I do light to medium speed/power kicks and punches or kata to warm up. In addition to warming me up it helps me determin my natural range without stretching. Without stretching I could probably kick about my neck height, which is pretty good, though my punching speed isn't as great without warmup. I guess my old gymnastics flexibility comes in handy with kicking :)

It's a pretty good idea to occasionally do it to see how your body responds.

The kicks of the styles that I practice I can do easily at full force without the need to stretch as the range of motion of the kicks is based on "normal" flexibilty.

It's good to practice this way. The guy jumping you on the street isn't going to give you time to stretch out. At the same time though, make sure you don't go to crazy without warmup. Remeber, you don't have to high kick an attacker in the head. Kick him in the gut, then when he's doubled over kick him in the head. :D
