The Promise of Martial Arts

A probably perverse devotion to discipline, hard work, and pain.

Why no one said Fighting skills ?

One of the best thing i learned was how to fight.

The best thing I learned was how not to fight.

So true. Fighting is so over rated. Just think of all of the bad things that can happen. Physical damage (teeth, eyes, bones, etc), legal implications, etc. Not to mention the emotional scars. Better to avoid fights if at all possible. But with all of that said, I can and will fight if my life of somone else's is at risk, or if I feel that it's the only option to not get harmed.

Knowing how to fight, be willing to fight, and knowing the difference are all different things.

Health, fitness, flexibility, improved reflexes and coordination.

The ability to stay calm and relaxed under pressure.

Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.

Development of Character, speed, agility and strategy thinking....

Thats what I got out of Martial Arts! :D :karate:

I was just thinking..... on my website, I have "Benefits of Martial Arts". I might use some of these on there.... thanks guys.

The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.

I don't know I how I could add to this already fantastic list of benefits made by everyone here. All I can say is that it has been the best thing that I have done for myself physically and mentally. I carry what I have learned and apply it to my everyday life.

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

You just did.... thank you.

What I got out of martial arts...?

Hm... loads of bruises, pain, sprained ankles, and frustration.

...and self-confidence, respect for myself and others, loyalty, trust, discipline, good fitness and health, and quick reflexes. When the martial arts became a part of my life, I also got to experience challenges and and excitement that most people don't see on a daily basis.

Not to mention a fairly high pain threshold.

You can see the list of pros far outweighs the cons. ;)

Edit: WHOA... sorry, didn't notice this topic was from 2006. Whoa.

It's more than just a martial art. It's responsibility and respect. It's friendship and trust. But most of all, it's a passion.

I gotta say theories, i love working with and teaching theory. there's just so many. i don't know, it's an odd thing that martial arts give me but i just love theory, it always just makes so much sense :)
