How Many Kata Does Your System Require...

Sohan

Recommended Posts

...to reach Shodan?

We actually study two systems in our school, Shorin-ryu and Shudokan, so we have a lot of kata. There are 33 in our school to reach first dan--9 kata just to go from Ikyu to Shodan.

Here is a list of our kata to Shodan:

Taikyuku 1-3

Empe Iwa, Empe Take

Seisan

Naihanchi 1-3

Pinan 1-5

Penpi and Penpo

Ananku

Wanshu

Shimpaton

Gojushiho

Chinto

Rohai Shodan

Passai Sho and Dai

Kusanku Sho and Dai

Tokamine Bo

Chatanyara Sai

Kyoku Kata 1-5 (#6 required for Nidan, #7 required for Sandan)

How about you?

With respect,

Sohan

Where I used to train we from White to black we required 11 kata.

Taikyuku 1

Heian 1-5

Bassai

Jion

Tekki 1

Bo Sho- Bo Form

Tsui Sho- Another Bo Form

The ability to perform the Bunkai for the Heian Kata was also required.

I believe I will adjust those requirements some when I eventually open my own place. I will require learning all 3 Taikyuku kata and Bunkai for all the kata will be required.

Sohan,

There are 26-ish in the school I'm at. Some are, of course upper dan ranks, and not talked about to lower kyus like me, so I'm not exactly sure of the total.

For Shodan, I'm told that there is a need for 12.

Let's see if memory serves...

To get green belt:

Kihon I-V

Nafanchin I-III

Siesan

To get brown:

Pinan I-V

Itotsu no Passai

To get shodan

Matsumura no Passai

Kusanku Sho + Dai

Chinto

5 Sai kata

3 Nunchuku kata (uncertian on exact number)

3 Bo kata(uncertain on exact number)

So assuming that I remembered correctly, that makes 19 empty handed and 11 weapons kata for Shodan

Wow. 11 weapons kata for Shodan. We only require 2, but 31 other empty handed kata. We study Shobayashi Shorin Ryu, as I see you study Kobayashi. Even if you take the Shudokan kata out, we still have about 23 kata from Shorin Ryu--sounds like we have about the same empty hand kata.

That's a lot of weapons work. Sounds fun, though.

Wow...that's crazy.

We have:

Short Form 1-3

Long Form 1-4

That's it. Well, aside from the 150 technique sequences.

Isshin Ryu had 8 to reach Shodan

So Ryu had 12 (which included Ura Jion and Ura Patusai) but not Kihon kata (which there were 4 of them.

The Kokyu kata have always interested me. Michio Koyasu was a student of Toyama and as such a relationship my interest sparked. We did a Kihon Kokyu ho kata which I don't believe was considered Kokyu. I heard many things about the series of kata and the guardedness of the kata which interested me all the more. I don't suppose that there is any other written information (be it historical or techniques used) about these kata. I would think not but then maybe someday??? :)
