Questions and Hellos from Kansas, USA

Greetings everyone. I just stumbled across this site whilst looking for information on Chinese Kenpo. I am going to sign on with a class and there are two options in my town: Kung Fu or Chinese Kenpo Karate. I recently started a self-defense class from the instructor who runs the Chinese Kenpo school. He seems very cool, but I just want to make an informed choice before I decide on Kenpo or Kung Fu. I am a basically stupid when it comes to Martial Arts, but from doing a bit of online study read that Chinese Kenpo derived from the Five Animal Kung Fu and that it has history in Zen Buddhism. I have no idea if this is correct or not, and apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but if there are any Chinese Kenpo practitioners here, perhaps you could fill me in? Also, I went searching on the site for differences between Chinese Kenpo and Kung Fu and could not find anything relevant. If you could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated...

Now that I got that long query out of the way :) I'm a 25 year old female; I'll be graduating with a music degree in May. I study Buddhism, Zen in particular, and have an insatiable curiosity about anything of Eastern culture. I am looking to Martial Arts for discipline and focus, spontaneity and strength... as well as to get my lazy butt in shape! I look forward to hearing your words and receiving your advice.

Peace,

Christina

Greetings, welcome. I recently started studying goju-ryu, i'm 12, and live in Canada. I find that most martial arts in general give good excercise, and teach much discipline. I think they also teach patience, because in some excercises our Sensei makes us stand in one position for half an hour or more. It's terrible... I think you should take up kempo, anyways. Kung fu never really appealed to me, but i'm not you. Anyways, welcome to the forums, keep us updated on your quest for karate.

Current: Yellow Belt in GojuRyu. White Belt in Kabudo.

Hey Christina welcome to KF.:)

Youmay want to re-post your question in the the Chinese section or even the karate section. I think we got some kenpo thread going in that on. We have some kenpoist on here that have a great wealth of knowledge about kenpo and I'm sure they would be willing to answer any questions you may have. Good luck in what you decide!:)

Welcome to the forums :)

I take American Kenpo, but I don't know much about Chinese Kempo. However, like Gheinisch said, you might want to post your questions in another section (the Getting Started in the Martial Arts section would be a good place to start as well, if you have any other questions) and I'm sure you'll get the answers you need.
