Also, diet drinks can contain chemical which can trigger asthma and lung problems.

Plus, water is much better for you anyway!

AE: I have asthma, and I (sadly enough) love diet sodas. I also noticed I have been having nighttime asthma recently, and I HAVE been drinking more soda than usual.....I wonder now if the two may be connected. Did you see this info in an article somewhere or can you post a link? Is it the Phenylalinine? (sp?) Thanks!

Yes, phenylalanine can trigger asthma, along with other artificial sweeteners/additives. I have asthma but I love drinking diet coke, so giving up the pop has been a bit of a hardship for me.

I read the info in an article in The Times newspaper (UK newspaper), but it was a while back. They have an archive section, so you may be able to find out something about it, especially if you do a general google search.

Just out of curiousity, how many pounds are in a stone? Is this a common measure in the UK?

I've dropped 30 pounds in the last 2 years, with a bulk of it coming off in the first year. Running the mornings helped, a little extra walking during the day, cutting out as much soda as possible, drinking lots of water all helped.

But the big thing was portion control and limiting snacks. A lot of times, you just have to ask yourself "do i want to eat this because I'm hungry, or because I'm bored?"

Good luck!

I'm no longer posting here. Adios.

You guys know ... we are sounding worse than woman with this weight thing .... ;-) But I have to be honest in saying that I am also busy shaking off some weight. I joined a gym here at work which helps me alot becuase I no longer go and have a pizza at lunch time but instead I have a 50 minute cardio session which leaves me feeling much better. I do cardio once a week and Tae-bo once a week as well.

In the beginning I started loosing centimetres/inches but since I have now started running 3 km (1.875 miles) in the mornings again, I can see a difference on the scale as well. I drink lots of water during the day. No coffee and hardly tee. I run at 05:15 and have breakfast at 07:15 when I get to work (I brink my own cereal, milk etc.). I only have 3 meals a day, but I try to have something small in between.

I am 5'11" and weighed 84.5 kg (186.29 pounds) and I am now (4weeks later) on 78 kg (171.96 pounds).

Nice to see people talking about a topic i started, just to follow up it was suggested to me that i should eat breakfast to jump start my metabolism. Does anyone else have any other ways to do this other than eating breakfast as i stated before i just cant eat that early.

Yeah, cos is great talking about a mutual interest. :-)

The best way then would be to take a run/jog. I know you mentioned that the weather is getting cold now (we are now having spring and summer is around the corner), so see if you can go to a gym early and run on the treadmill (sp?). That is my suggestion ..... works for me. ;-)

You're right about it being cold running in the morning - windy too, and dark (until the clocks go back again). But it sets me up nicely for breakfast.

Instead of 3 main meals a day, try eating 5 smaller ones, which evens out your calorie intake over the course of the day.

I would recommend using weight watchers. In 6 months using it I lost 47 pounds (from 235 to 187). Using that and my MA training have really made a difference. It's amazing how much your diet affects your weight loss (instead of only working out). It sounds obvious, but a lot of people don't do it, hehe.

good luck.
