GrrrArg Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Very very badly ie: not at all. Hence GrrrArg will be skipping off into the distance..
Karate-addict Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 In my style of karate students start, after learning the second kata, with a formal bunkai, which they have to do at their next test (6.kyu) but more or less we do bunkai at training all the time, discovering new ideas and polishing the old ones. hara wo neru
italian_guy Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 In my school instructor teaches application that become part of the test exam so we give a lot of emphasis to it. Anyhow searching for other applications is a good idea.I will do that myself.
Chirath Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 My sensei does it for the basics but never for kata. But I think at black belt level he starts teaching the bunkai for kata.
isshinryushodan Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 I was pleaed to see this subject arise. In our dojo we strongly promote bunkai. there are 2 different types. formal and informal. this is a wonderful learning tool for both the student and instructor. I think this is where, once you are a upper rank, you put your own spin on things. Not changing the traditional way, but putting a little spice and zip into your own style. I think you honestly cover all of the basics and then some with practice of bunkai. Always remember the true spirit of the martial way. mr. gibson, shodan(1st degree)
