Rich67
I had my first drink at 18....a Samuel Adams wine cooler. But I never got drunk until I was 21. I never had a real taste for alcohol, and I would only imbibe when it was New Years or my birthday. 2 times a year...wooo hooo! So, I am a VERY moderate drinker. I don't care all that much for booze, and I'd rather have a protein drink than a cold beer. Mixed Martial Artist

Randy
I dont see any problem with moderate drinking, then again im not a doctor. My 1st grading camp was held at a small coastal village, we trained all saturday and ran up this huge hill. Saturday night alot of us (including Sensai) gathered on the beach to drink and chat. I ended up having quite a few too many drinks and having to be helped off to my tent that night. Next morning 7am everyone was woken up for 1km of kicks along the beach. That was probably the toughest thing ive ever had to do, i felt so sick (hungover & dehydrated & empty stomach) , it was absolete hell, serves me right. I felt sick that whole day and having to stand out in the hot sun practicing katas and performing grade requirments was painful. I ended up getting my yellow belt and have definetly learnt my lesson. Do any of you guys go out & celebrate after gradings? (or the night before like us)... or maybe its just an Aussie thing?

47MartialMan
I knew a couple of Aussies, that when they came here on their travels, they drank Fosters beer all day long.

A glass of wine is OK...in fact it may have health benefits. But why do people feel it is necessary to knock back 5 or 6 beers when they go out with friends 3-4 times a week? I can't justify drinking $25-40 of beer to catch a buzz and "assist" my good time. I can enjoy myself with an iced tea as much as if I was slamming shots. It just depends on the company you keep. If you need to be drinking to have a good time, then you should find other friends or do something else, because they are boring and the event you're at STINKS. Hudson
As far as fighting fit, your a lower fat level will help all around. You'll be lighter, speedier, able to get more power, and in tourny cases, fight in a lower weight class. Now, beers and such are just empty calories. I wouldn't suggest getting drunk ever for the obvious reasons, but a glass of wine would never hurt. The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move. aefibird
Do any of you guys go out & celebrate after gradings? (or the night before like us)... or maybe its just an Aussie thing? lol, it must be a Brit thing as well - at my dojo we always get together in the pub after a grading. However, most of the people drink soft drinks (cola and the like) and those that do drink alcohol tend to just have one alcoholic drink. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that the junior members (under 18's) come to the pub as well as the adults and we want to show a good example to them. It's possible to go to a pub or to be at a social setting without getting 'plastered' on alcohol. Still, I'm not knocking those who like to have a drink. Personally, I drink alcohol - I like a nice cold beer with a take-away on a Friday or Saturday night, and I will also drink in moderation at celebration events such as weddings. It's a personal choice, but if a person is really serious about MA training, then I'd suggest that alcohol shouldn't be something that they regularly drink. "Was it really worth it?
