Rotten Head Fok
I remember my first time, my teacher told me to hit him, well I took it to heart and started throwing hay-makers, one well placed punch knocked me on my can. I miss it(not getting knocked on my can, sparring), I happy to here you did well, you can learn alot from sparring, use it, and try not to knock out your sparring partner. You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.

aefibird
If you need any specific equipment, then you're probably better off asking your instructor first. He or She should be able to tell you exactly what you need, as well as being able to recommend a brand and where to buy it from. I'm glad you did well at your first time sparring - keep up the good work! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." Luckykboxer
i cannot say this enough. Invest... in a great mouthpiece. do not buy the cheapest pice of plastic you find. your teeth are hard and expensive to replace and will never be the same. head injuries can be permanent and at times fatal. a great mouth piece.... WIPPS for example, there are others, will be the best protection against broken and chipped teeth you can get. It also protects against some of the jarring your brain can take when your head is struck and moves quickly and violently

GrrrArg
I agree with LuckyBoxer if you are going to use a mouth gauard make it a decent one or don't use one at all. No guard is better than a poor mouth guard because without a guard you will only loosed the tooth/teeth that are hit. With a bad guard you will lose them all.
