Ok I am very interested in M.A's and have decided I want to do it for various reasons and one has become stronger by the day.

1. At school I get picked on by people and I have bruises all over me. These kids don't hurt me - They even punch me as hard as they can in the head and face. But it's just that they think they can push me around for no reason because they are bigger than me. I would just like be able to defend myself against them not go picking for fights. I would like to keep my M.A out of my personal life because just maybe my speed and strength would give me an advantage.

2. I would like to be able to do a lot of damage, be quick, and do cool-looking moves that actually have usefulness. I also would like to take opponents down to the ground. I was thinking MT. Reason for not doing it here:

3. I am of a strong build. ( I am naturally "tank" and have big muscles but they are weak because I don't train + quit all my previous sports ).

But because I've put on weight on top on my natural tankiness, It makes it harder for me to use speed and agility. Also when I try to hit people back they move away too quick.

4. I need a martial art that can help me ( Note: I have a slight back problem. Note: I have a boxing bag as of last week ) Please help me.

Jason.

First off, you need to inform the authorities of the people that are attacking you. Get that crap stopped immediately.

Secondly go into any local karate studio, watch how they train, ask the students what they think, visit a few schools first before you make a choice, talk to the instructors about your problem, listen to their responses.

And then choose the instructor that is going to give you what you want most, and is still going to help guide you and help you grow not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well.

good luck

okay, those fancy looking moves youre talking about- lets just say none of them work. what works is hard punching, kicking, elbowing, kneeing, tackling, bone breaking, etc. what you want to do is something like boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, bjj. grappling is really what id recommend for your situation, especially with your strong build. bjj would be great for ground fighting, and is one of if not the best real martial art (meaning actually useful on the street.) but boxing would be better if you have a really bad back like you said. if you really want to fight, do something hardcore like that- thats what will help you. you should not however go out looking for a fight, because you will get hurt. try to get away. and definitely contact some sort of authorities like luckyboxer said, you dont have to put up with that *. good luck.

I'd recommend Boxing, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jujitsu or Muay Thai to you as the best form of fighting defence. Possibly Kyokushin Karate also.

However, do you only want to do MA to defend yourself or to be able to eventually get back at those who are attacking you now? I know that you say that you only want to defend yourself, but make sure that you're not subconciously out for revenge. It's important to really think of and consider the reasons why you want to train in MA before taking one up.

I'd go and have a look and see what was available in my area, if I were you, before making any firm decisions about what MA you want to do. If you know someone who trains in Martial Arts and can recommed a club, then even better!

Good luck in your search.

Please go and inform someone about those who are attacking you - it will greatly help your situation if someone else knows.

Go have a look at as many different classes as you can. Any martial art will improve your confidence, which is what not being bullied is all about. If they *think* you can and will fight back they probably leave you alone. If it is more serious than that go have a chat with mr police man. They wont have any where near as much fun when they arew threatened with court proceedings, take pictures of any visible bruising etc: for evidence if need be.

Well I'm not going to the cops. It's for defence. I would like to have discipline as you may have seen my post that my best friend came 2nd in the World MT

Championship for his age / weight group ( Though he fights people heavier than his age-group ). He has never once used any MT stuff out of the MT Gym or ring. I was talking to him today and he said I should do the beginner MT class as the fighter class might get me a bit hurt when sparring as I'm not very fit currently. I do not want "revenge" I would just like to be able to stop his punches and hopefully inflict some pain back if need be. I am not going to go pick on everyone because I have got the strength. I'll inquire for this MT.

Let ya know how it goes boys !

Here it is. If you want to join a MA to defend yourslef, thats cool. On the other hand, if you want to defend and hurt, that is wrong, you shouldn't even be allowed to step foot in a dojo. MA is not about hurting someone. Granted you learn a lot of cool stuff and new moves, but when diefending yourself, you have to do just enough to walk away safe, not leave the attacker sitting there spewing blood from his mouth. But if you want to join an MA that you can learn to defend yourslef, then try Shotokan Karate or BJJ.

shodan - Shotokan

Blue Belt - Jiu-Jitsu

You've gotten some good advise here. You say you're not going to the cops but someone should be informed of your situation. If they start leaving you alone they'll just look for another victim. MT is a great art that can teach you some techniques quicker than some arts out there. Our instructor informed us after receiving out yellow belts that we knew just enough to get hurt. So don't expect to be ready to defend yourself after a week of classes. That goes for any art that you might decide on. MT is a stand up fighting art and is limited on ground fighting techniques so consider that as well. Your friend in MT has given you good advise, check out the class and see what you think. Hope all turns out well. Good luck in finding an art that suits you. :karate:

In kickboxing you are usually exposed to full contact after 1 to 2 years of training. You know punches and kick hurts and you need to be fit and conditioned. :)

BJJShotose, im gonna have to disagree here. when it comes to a confrontation on the street, if some guys going to try to punch you in the face, you shouldnt do the bare minimum to stop him, you should garuntee you stop him. why risk doing any less than everything you can? in other words, if its me and some guys throwing a punch, theres no way in hell im going to stop with dodging/blocking/whatever and punching him. theres no way im going to stop at knocking him down even. (unless he has friends who are closing in). me, im going to kick and stomp him on the ground, break his arm, or somehow else disable him from doing a damn thing to me- and then get the hell out of there. if someone else enters into a street fight with you, you have every right to hospitalize the *; and if you ask me, it would be unwise to do less. thats not to say that i pick fights or want to kill someone or something, or even want to hurt people... but you dont treat the symptoms you treat the disease.
