what is your personal battle cry?

Recommended Posts

we all know the famous "hiiiiiyaaaaaaaa" that martial arts are known for. but what exactly do you guys cry out? i know that its hard to describe and every kihap is different, but thats what makes me curious :)

P.S.: please dont do posts that you think kihaps are crap and ridiculous, ok? i know that there is nothing funnier than a beginners class of white belts doing kihaps, but hey - its there for a purpose :) :karate:

Well, I personally see what Icetuete is implying. I've heard and emmitted so many different cries:

1. I-yaaa! (a long hiya without the 'H')

2. Saaahh!

3. HA!

4. FFFTT!

5. WHO!

6. A-Saahhh!

7. Oiyaaa!

8. Kihap! (more well known in TKD)

9. AAARHH! (the Pirate does karate)

10. Shhhh! (snake kung-fu, anyone?)

11. Ah-Su! (God bless you.)

and last but not least:

12. HADOKEN! (with your palms bent, facing your opponent  )

Personally, I'm more of a fan with anything that ends with "yaaa!"

I just kinda grunt, *enugh*

Gets the air out well, sounds very daft though and not all that impressive.

In the true spirit of ma you could shout "Diiiieeee"

people don't realize that there is significance to the yell that you do - at least in chinese martial arts. there are seven sounds used when exhaling. the different sounds stimulate different organs and produce different effects when striking.

I don't use the seven sounds, however. I only really used them when doing forms, which I don't do anymore, since I no longer train in longfist.

My thai kboxing instructor yells "aish!" when doing a hard strike. on occasion, I will yell "sugoi" which means "let's fight" in japanese. I usually do that at the beginning of a match. other than that, I don't yell at all, only exhale silently.

For some reason, I'm usually yelling out "ZEET!" I have no idea where I got that from.

I've used those sounds in healthful Qigong, but I've never used them with techniques. For one thing, when used incorrectly, they can be unhealthy. There are specific postures and breathing (among othr things) that are used with these sounds to effect specific organs. I suppose if you really know what you are doing, it might do some good.

I've seen people, and systems, that use different sounds to create differnt effects- short, explosive sounds for quick strikes- longer strong sounds for kicks, long, windy sounds for throws, etc. I've even seen people make the sounds of the strikes when they spar- as in 'POW', WHACK', 'BIFF', BLAM', etc. It's sort of comical.

I don't usually make any noises, except when I groan or yell "Ouch!"

:bawling: Not in the face!

I'm a bleeder!

I'm telling my Mom!

Prepare to be cried upon!

I'll sue!

Rape!

Call the Police!

:P But seriously, I agree with seven star. There is a purpose bhind the cry? In karate it was the kia and in traditional Muy Thai it is the os. In karate i was taught that the kia was an actual weapon to stun your opponent with your ferocity and intent. The os in traditional MT is to emphasize the attack and remind morons like myself to maintain proper breathing technique. It is effective especially when your running out of steam as it forces u to take a deep breath and reoxygenate your body. :brow:
