Red Triangle student
Hey i have a real pressing issue on my mind. In the warm up when i do the splitz i can get very low but i am not sure which way you are meant to lean when you do it(this is very hard to explain in words) should the correct way and more effective for yur legs be to lean forwards? Or do you have to just keep your weight central and push down because i cant sink any lower than a certain point when i do this. Ironberg
You should try to be able to do the full splits - have your toes pointed up, and have your solar-plexes against the floor. There are lots of people who can't do this because not only do you need to be flexible in the groin and thighs, but in the hip joints as well. Ironberg
holy crap, I think I'll work on touching my toes before I try those :/ Yes, that's a good idea. What I usually do is preform the front splits on both sides before I go straight into the side splits in that nature. It just kinda loosens things up. Or you could throw a large amount of kicks at the heavy bag and fall into it from there. Just remember that the muscles are best challenged when WARM. I didn't recieve my flexibility without stretching after sweat pouring workouts - that actually helps. Red Triangle student
Yes thanks for the advice, ill try that in future. I am quite flexible so i will be able to do that in about ...er...a month. My sensei Frank Brennan can do it it is uncanny the way he does it. Goku
Here is another way you can try to achieve a full split. A professional wrestler who used to be into martial arts and kickboxing and other fighting. He was the same way as you when it came to acheiving a split. So he got 2 chairs and put one foot on each and that helped him to go down further. He said he'd just do that but hold on to a broomstick or something so he didn't slide down too far, too fast. After a while he got the split. He even made up his own olympic lift. It's called the van dam lift. You do a split inbetween chairs and hold a dumbell. It's quite impressive actually. Maybe that method could help you.

ang_soo_do_guy
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DO SPLITS IM ABOUT A FOOT OFF THE FLOOR IN SIDE SPLITS AND ABOUT HALF IN FRONT BUT I CAN TOUCH MY TOES NO PROB WHICH IS WHY I WONDER I CANT DO SPLITS "learning a martial art is like tuning a string instrument. tune the strings too hard and they will snap tune them too little and it will not play but tune it right and you will have music for a lifetime"-anonomous
aefibird
ang_soo_do_guy, please don't type all in CAPS as people think that you're shouting. Thanks. If you keep on practicing and training you will eventually be able to do the spilts. It took me a long time to become flexible, as I'm one of Nature's naturally inflexible people... There is no 'set time limit' for being able to do the splits, it is different for different people. Keep on stretching every day (but make sure your muscles are warm or you could injure them) and I'm sure that soon you will be able to do the splits. If you have a positive mental attitude about it and tell yourself that you will accomplish it, then you're likely to be able to do the splits faster than if you get dspondant and think that you're never gonna reach your goal. Mental attitiude plays a big part in the way the human body behaves and responds. Good luck, and keep going! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..."
