MunkyBoy
hey there. i stretch alot to make me flexible and to make my train my ... and to make'm longer (sry, english not first language - dont know how to call'em). weight training for instance shortens my ... again, so do i have to choose whether i either stretch or weight train? does weight training make my stretching obsolete? do i have a development in the wrong direction for one of these when i do the other? if i would train my muscles + stretch the same area of my body... would this have no effect if i had done both? just wondering... thanks in advance! Ben
Flexabilty and strength do go together and is fairly easy to obtain. There have been many threads here explaining this, but i'd may as well summarise it here Weight training is there to tone muscles and make you slightly stronger. it compliments technique. As does flexibility. If you're not going over the top on weights (trying to get "big") then you can obtain both by doing weights and stretching. For a list of stretching that can be done ( if you dont already know ) go to the "Sticky" thread in this section As for advice about weights, if you have a quick look through this section you're sure to find a lot of information on how to use weights with MA in mind Hope i've helped! Ben
i was actually thinking he meant "tendons" and "ligaments" ... of course, they are probably spelt wrong because my spelling is awful but you get the picture
Tibby
Don't worry, you can't really "shorten" your muscles. What do people who overstretch their muscles do? Lift weights? No, they have an operation. Your muscles shorten when they are NOT used. In fact, many exercises are made so that you are suppose to stretch your muscles out while doing them. If you weight train properly, you are going to HAVE to stretch, before lifting, as well as during.

Ben
I understand your want not to get big, but its usually best to develop all the major muscles in your body so there is no imbalance that can cause injury. The mechanics of your body make every movement make atleast two muscles work. you really want something in there for your back, atleast. like someone said in another post, and i feel is a pretty good example, boxers also use weights for their legs, and they dont even kick not meant to be a "do this!" type comment, just wanting you to know if you didnt already
WhiteBelt
After doing many power squats (focus on adductor) I'm getting better results with the splits. More leg curls and some light streching and I'd be good for the front splits too. So, no, weight training does not shorten muscles (if done properly). PrideampPoise
From what I've read, as well as my personal experience, stretching after you lift helps a lot with flexibility.
Bretty101
Ever hear of the guy Tom Platz? Body builder of Arnold Swarzeniggers (sp?) ers. He had the biggest legs i've (or anyone) has ever seen. yet he could do the box splits, touch his toes, everything. Don't froget the thing stopping you from touching your toes is a nerve reflex, causing the stretch muscle to contract. You want to learn to control and relax this reflex! the size of the muscle has nothing to do with it. I do weights (squads, deadlift and quite a bit of cycling) and can do front to back and box splits. Just keep practicing! B
