Could be a number of things, but if it comes and goes it probably isn't a break/tear whatever. Next time it happens, get a bucket of ice, fill it with water, and put your hand and wrist in it and see if that helps. It could just be inflamation. If that helps, ice it everyday. See a doctor of it persists.

Lol, a lot. Well, not so much for the horses as you would think, we got grow 10 acres of hay, so we got alot of that covered:) I mean, we still buy grain, and of coarse all the wormers and shots and shoes. But in an average month we spend I think, all in all, we end up hitting 800-1000 dollars a month. That is a rough estimate.

I trained boxing for 3 years, and I benefitted much because I am ambidextrious (i can write with both hands pretty good). Although I haven't done enough experimenting in amatuer fights (they are short), when sparring I change up from a left to a right handed stance (i do the classic sugar ray stance, with the shoulder roll) because I like getting inside and moving while throwing alot of hooks. Anyway, just saying that when sparring south paws i liked to switch up my stance and see how they react-could be a bad thing, i'm not the most experienced, so if they surprise me when i'm messing with my stances i could be in for some trouble...

Alright guys, first update. I went to Shaolin Kempo, and, I dont want to badmouth someone, but it didn't seem to suit me. I didn't feel comfortable with the whole thing. I mean, i don't know if this is a big deal, but it didn't sit well with me having 3 black belts about 10 years old (maybe younger). So anyway, this friday I get to go to a Shotokon class here. THe place is real nice looking (i've seen pictures and drove by it), and it seems very qualified. The Shotokon guy is a 4th dan, and is under the AAFK. He does alot of work, including the AAKF/ JKA tournaments (i mean he refs, he is a little bit older of a guy, like 55-60) And he is always leading self defense siminars and stuff in the area (mostly for highschools and colleges). I'm not jumping the gun, but he is affiliated with a great program, and has been invvolved in a rediculous amount of Shotokon stuff. I mean, i think the AAFK, from what i've read, is really reputable. Any input?

Haha, for this, it depends. My old dogs (jenny and shannon) ignore the cats completely. Bo, on the other hand (being a very very large puppy) will chase the cats down and put their heads in his mouth. He won't bite down or hurt them or anything, he just thinks it is funny. We stop him when we catch him, but sometimes we will find the cat with his head completly soaked in slobber. Well, we only have 1 house cat, the other 2 are barn cats.

Hmm.... here is my list... Shannon - Old German Shepherd Jenny - Old Dalmation BO - 4 month old German Shepherd (81 lbs as of yesterday, his father was 130lb german shepherd!) Oh, ok. Cool. I enjoy the sports programs at the smaller schools. My brother played football at an NAIA school, and I am a season ticket holder at the DII school here in my home town. I have an appreciation for these programs, and I think they provide great entertainment. Which NAIA school? My cousin coach at Western Montana, a NAIA school. I was recruited by a bunch of them up in that area. D2, NAIA, and D1AA are more competitive than people think. We are big enough to give scholarships, so we get everyone that just missed D1 programs- which can be some amazing talents, especially after developing. That is cool to hear that you support the small school football programs. Anyway, on another subject, I went to the Shaolin Kempo school tonight. I was not impressed. First of all, he had like 3 kids that looked about 10 or younger with black belts. I then saw adults sparring at the end, and they were brown and black belts. They looked like they were just flailing and I'm pretty sure not 1 through any kick but a front snap kick. no strategy or quickness. His whole story made me somewhat uncomfortable - all in all i would have to say it seems a little fishy. I will choose to go somewhere else and be safe. I mean, it could be a great place, but I just didn't get the best impression. NEXT UP - SHOTOKON CLASS this friday

Oh and also, I would talk to your doc about going on a diet. That would help the most out with your weight. Another thing about the sprinting is that it is shown to actually shed pounds faster compared to long distance running because of the way it bumps up your metabolism. It keeps burning fat when you are done, or something like that. I would google "benefits of interval training" to find out more on the subject.
-
With all of that, I would probably start cross training to get in the best shape. Start out hitting the heavy bag for 3 x 3 minute rounds. Try to get 80-100 shots in each round. You could add another round every two weeks or something if you feel good. The other way I highly suggest for conditioning is interval sprinting. It is an awesome way to shock your system into higher coniditioning. A study done showed that several people, 20-30 years old, sprinted 4x a week for 2 weeks, and increased their cardio by 100%. For sprinting, a good one is to sprint for 30 seconds (after a good warm up of coarse) and walk 2 minutes. Repeat 4-7 times (start off at 4). If you do this 3 times a week, you could add another one on each week. If you alternated that with heavy bag work, you would be in awesome shape in no time.

I have a bad mouth at times, but I know when to control my mouth and when it is appropriate to let a few slip. For example, talking to buddies in the locker room, no problem. Talking to the head coach, you change your tone in a hurry. Something funny I heard from my history prof is where the middle finger originated from. A long time ago when the French and British fought in the middle ages, is when it was developed. The French would capture British Longbow men and cut off their middle finger so they could no longer shoot a bow. The british, in response, would show the French their middle finger to show that they haven't had it cut off yet. Not sure how accurate it is, though it did come from a history professor. Anyway, thought I would throw that in there.

Yeah, see a doc. It could be cartlidge, which wouldn't be too big of a deal. It could be a sprain, or it could be a ligament tear, that would be bad. If you don't require surgery (knock on wood) your doc will probably strengthen the muscles in your leg to better support your joint. I've seen all the knee injuries in the book, and, because of the complecated design of that major join, only a doctor can tell what really is going on. If you can walk up and down stairs, that is a good thing though, but definetly see a doc. If it is like an ACL/MCL tear, then walking a straight line won't be a big deal, it would be if you put pressure on the side impact, like cutting or pivoting. So, long story short, see a doc. If the injury didn't immediately incapacitate you, and you were able to walk, and if you didn't injure it in a high risk manuever, it probably won't be as bad as I said, but tweaking your knee can cause unseen damage. SEE A DOCTOR LIKE EVERYONE SAID LOL, it will probably be best.

ABSOLUTELY LOL, i think glucosimine saved my knees during all my sports:P I would highly recomend it.

How many of you have actual combat experience?
bigscottius replied to kenpo4life's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've been in a lot of fights. Especially in college (football vs basers). I guess the one thing to know about winning a fight is to feel the adrenaline. It is the craziest feeling ever, and it invigorates me. I love it, but some people don't. I guess it is the fight or flight thing, some people's adrenaline makes them want to run, others make them want to fight. I have been in close to 20 full fights (3 of which involved more than 10 people) since college. Before college I fought probably 8 times in highschool. I consider a fight where someone decisively wins. Someone is on the ground bleeding, and can't get up on their own power. Less than that I think it would be more of a scuffle or something, not a real fight. Anyway, fighting becomes easier as time goes. I've learned to curb my adrenaline and stay (somewhat) calm, try to keep a level head. Even though I do that, it always seems like as soon as the first punch is thrown, it is like an explosion of energy. It is hard to describe. -
What weapon do you actually carry?
bigscottius replied to pressureguy's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Well, I carry a few things at all times... 1. A whistle around my neck that magically summons 10 ninjas to fight at my side 2. An RPG (i hide it in my back pocket) 3. My ruger superblackhawk single action .44 magnum (when I get confronted by an outlaw that challenges me to a duel) 4. I drive around in my A-1a abram tank 5. Flint lock pistol (a weapon against any pirates) 6. My armored belgium horse and a 10 foot lance I carry most of these at the same time, except sometimes the flint lock pistol (only carried when near a coast line) -

Dealing with a ?bully?
bigscottius replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Oh, and about that "my dogs do that" comment or whatever, all you have to do is say something like, "Yeah, be careful which dog you back into a corner, they might bite pretty hard". -
Dealing with a ?bully?
bigscottius replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've known many overly agressive types that get a big head. The one way i've known to deal with big guys that have a big head is to act better than them. Don't give them the time of day. Act like your so much better of a person, that you won't even look their way. They want to confront you? Your too good to give them your time. It sounds like he is trying to intimidate you, don't let him. He says stuff to people, laugh at it. They are beneath you anyway, so their petty words won't hurt you right? He tells people to hit harder when they aren't suppose to? Tell them not to pull that stuff infront of you, that you won't hear of it. MOst likely they will follow the lead of the confident guy, and you will show your truly stronger than him. Most big guys that do that have a confidence problem, and they want to use thier stature and size to get what they want. Especially if he wants to fight you, don't give it to him. Even if you beat him up, he will learn a better lesson if you act above fighting him. Believe me, it is really hard to fight someone who shrugs you off. I say, don't ever give in to him. Don't give in to his tactics or anything. By your post, it seems like you are the stronger person, so act like it. Leadership is more about doing what is right in a strong and confident matter than intimidation and cheap actions. I'll give you a story about a personal experience. During college ball my freshman year, this d-line (we think a roider) wanted to push everyone around and start fights, especially after he was beat. I remember one time after i knocked him to the ground, he got up and started swinging at my helmet. I stood there and took 4 punches to the helmet (didn't hurt me a bit) and said, "Come on now, you done throwing your temper tantrum?" Everyone on the field started laughing, and the kid felt really awkward and out of place. Never tried anything like that to me again. I could have given him a hell of a brawl, but my tactic worked 100x better. -
Hello everyone. I am bigscottius (my name is scott, i got the nickname scottius during highschool, and in college everyone refers to the O line as big whatever, like big john, big scott lol) I played college football. I wrestled during highschool and placed at state (never actually won the championship, but i screwed myself over lol i shoulda been first). I boxed for 4 years now during the spring and summer in highschool, and then in the winter-summer in college (yeah even with off season football). I've read so much on this forum, and even comment some in the fitness section from what I've learned through my athletic career. Right now i'm looking at three different Martial Arts schools to join, shotokon, shaolin kempo, or hapkido. I've always been interested, so my brother and I decided to focus physically on a martial art. My brother and I will join (we will be called the Giant Double Dragons lol, he was D-line in college). Anyway, everyone is so nice and informative on this forum, i am definetly glad I joined. People seem so knowledgeable here, and your advice has already benefited me greatly. Anyway, i guess that is my introduction! big scott

I have a suggestion for you in general flexibility. In college, our strength and conditioning coach made us do this after form run to get more flexible, and doing it 4x a week in the offseason for 2 weeks really made a difference. It is called the inch worm. I would suggest jogging 5-10 minutes before hand to warm up your muscle (i would suggest getting the blood pumping before any stretching). I don't know how this would specifically help with kicking and all, but it does help general flexibility. Here is a video demonstarting it.

I might have a piece of advise for you. I played college football, and the day after the game all of us travelers would meet on the track and go for a light 10-15 minute jog. We would keep it extremely light. We wouldn't push hard enough to really get exercise, but our strength and conditioning coach said that helped with the lactic acid in our muscles. You could try that.

I will. I go to the classes this week, and I found another school, a shotokan school. I'm going to check out multiple classes of each, I've already called the schools. Shaolin Kempo, Hapkido, or Shotokan, it is a toss up. The end result will come from which school impresses me, and which classes impress me that i watch. I don't know enough about the arts to judge without seeing. So, you will hear from me on this thread again in a week. Thanks for all your input.

OH, and also, i'm not completely concerned with self defense. I've been in many fights, and my boxing and wrestling have proven me more than capable of handling anyone that would want to attack a 290lb football player (luckily most avoid fighting me, and i don't go looking for fights, i'm not like that). So strickly for self defense isn't really something I need. I am more looking to expand my knowledge and challenge myself in something new that i have been interested in for a while. Also, for self defence, a full arsenal is the best defence, so I'm not saying it won't help me...
