In "The One" Jet Li does Bagua (Gabe) and Xingyi (Yulaw), I was wondering - Does he actually know these arts in their entirety (or close too) or has he picked out the bagua elements of his wushu training and strung them together? Sorry for all the stupid questions lately but I'm interested (and it's WAY better than doing Sociology ) Thanks, E.I.S

After you get over looking like a complete fool (jumping around shouting "kiah" on your own) I think it's highly beneficial, whether you go through the moves while doing it or not...

Interesting point you make, all about preferance really... If your guard provides a lot of protection to your thorax, chance is that they will go for the face, expect it and counter... Personally, I hold my guard low, as to encourage a punch in the face, wait for it, grab their arm (pretty quick reflexes) and either take-down, lock, throw or in an extremely pressing situation, a chop to the throat... Having a guard up at all is to: a) protect from a blow/protect especially vulnerable areas. b) Minimising your opponents options on where to hit you IMHO.... That and reading Bearich's post should get my point across! lol.

I want to train in this art so bad! It sounds like a perfect art for me (along with aikido). One thing, I watched some Youtube vids of Fu style bagua and and the practicioners seemed to lack the power I had expected... I'm guessing this was just the practicioners? Also is Bagua affected by "McDojoism"? Thanks, E.I.S

That boy is insane... As if a ps3 is worth that! An xbox 360 on the other hand.... Lmao, while I kind of understand your thinking Gypsy Rover, you have to remember that dead folks' relatives do sue -

snap kick uses
Existence_is _suffering replied to gypsy rover's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
You can use a front snap/push kick to give yourself a bit of breathing space/room for another kick.. Or as a jab (my preferred use). Not that big a fan of the cresent kick, but you can use it to knock their guard out of the way. -
I had a good friend...a Hung Gar Kung Fu practioneer, that did a one finger board break at a tournament a number of years ago. He did it (2 attempts) and immediately afterwards came up to me and said ..."Paul, if you EVER see me try to do that again, STOP ME! I think I broke my FINGER!" Hahaha, nice story! They really don't allow open-hand strikes in some MMA comps?!

Haha, I wrote a whole paragraph about Baguazhang before I realised my mistake Ok, from memory, it originated in Hebei Province but is pretty well-known across the country (Taiwan too).Very martial oriented (not really pretty) and has some kind of charging step... (sorry, I know I'm sketchy but it might help ) It also has quite strenous lower body training. Has a higher horse stance than most of the long fist styles... As far as I recall it has little to do with Tajiquan, BUT, is closely related to an art called Piguazhang and is sometimes taught along with it. This site looks to have some decent stuff on it as well: https://www.geocities.com/ottawakungfu/300baji001 and click the links under "Baji" in the left-hand window (sorry for all the directions but my computer doesn't show the URL for some reason.) Alternatively, go to yahoo and search "geocities.com - baji' click on the first thing that comes up (should say Hsing Yi and have atlantamartialarts in the URL) then click "Baji" in the left hand window. Sorry for the long-winded instructions and I hope I've provided at least some help! E.O.S P.S. I'm very envious of you, living/working and training in China is one of my dreams! Good luck with everything!

Yeah, I had a pretty much no-tolerance policy at my school too (the last one I went to). As a matter of fact, my little brother had been bullied for months actually faught back against one, so they rang my mother and asked her to come in for a chat and told her (even though they knew this was going on for a while) that my brother was in more trouble than the bully because he should of told a teacher (he had like three times apparently, got the "tattle-tale" speech etc)... My mother was that enraged/amazed that she stopped arguing and walked out on them... Ridiculous huh?! Seconded

I saw it on the first time on the weekend, pretty cool movie! Anyway, I was wondering what those kind of "jerky" movements are in the final fight scene? Looks like some internal thing maybe... Or am I completely off the mark? Thanks, E.I.S -
Tai Chi is apparently really, really effective (If you can find a genuine teacher who isn't just into the "old people" Tai Chi... JUST for health purposes) And yeah, I believe Wushu does mean Martial Art! As for choosing a style/school, I would actually ask to sit in on a class of each, talk to the people that would be teaching you (remembering that just because someone is the "boss", doesn't mean they will be teaching you) and maybe do a little more research into the styles themselves!

If he's just a jock venting his insecurities on you, put a slight smirk on your face, calmly take two BIG steps backwards, and walk away, shaking your head with an amused grin... Or just put your hands up and casually say something like "I don't want to fight!".... HOWEVER, if the guy is a raving psycho, wait until physical contact is made (I mean a shove etc. If he launches a full-blown hay-maker at you, dodge/parry/evade )and then launch a counter and make a get away if you can... -
Scernio, What would you do
Existence_is _suffering replied to Clarence's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ok, first I'd turn to the guys following me, put on my most masculine-but-casual voice and say "did you guys want something?" or "Can I help you?" If they make it pretty clear that they want to fight, I'd wait until they're a shuffle-step away quickly shuffle step towards the middle guy go straight for the eyes with a clawing type motion, block anything the others try with my forearms and shins, hit the them in eyes, knees to the solar plexus and then face, giving me enough time sprint over to the mugging... Sounds completely ridiculous when you read it (unless you do it in the magic hours of 3-5am, when anything at all seems possible ) but it all works in my head And anyway, if that fails I have my ever reliable, 100% effective back-up plan: Mind-Bullets
