Fighting someone who has no control
TangSooDoGuru replied to dragonwarrior_keltyr's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yes that is very true, with this one particular student iam talking about i make sure form is there before power. i dont hit him hard but he absolutely positively makes it out to be more than it is. its actually quite funny because if i actually hit as hard as i could, he would sure as heck know it. -
Uhm in my two different styles one is white pants and a white top with everything trimmed in black and then the other one is an all black one. i like the black one and the other one but i like the black pants with the white with black trim top and i like the mix and match look of white top black bottom and black bottom and white top. we dont use any of these, but when i open my own school one day, we'll see.

Fighting someone who has no control
TangSooDoGuru replied to dragonwarrior_keltyr's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yes actually it does fuel the fire, and i do it intentionally, heres why...no matter how hard he goes on my he's still going to end up face down on the floor. and youre exactly right, his head is very open and his timing is very off but i know that if i hit him in the head, i would undoubtedly clock him a good one, so i take the path of mental control and dont -

New self-defense laws cause confusion
TangSooDoGuru replied to baronbvp's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yea, my instructors a cop so we have threat levels and how to respond to them spelled out in our manuals. very similar, nice article though. -
You cannot forbid little children from going to the toilet. Firstly it's just not right (they have smaller bladders than us) and secondly it will be you that has to clear up the mess when you find the one's that REALLY did need to go to the toilet. Instead you have to find ways to discourage toilet breaks, and also ask beforehand if everyone has gone to the toilet. The thing is, if you constantly allow them to go to the bathroom all of the time, then you will never have a focused class because you will have kids going to the bathroom all of the time. One will go and come back, and then another goes. I have seen this from the outside looking in, and the inside looking out. Kids try us; that is a fact. You mention finding ways to discourage toilet breaks: denying them is a good way to discourage them. It should be established before the kids sign up that toilet breaks should be done prior to coming to class. I honestly don't think that kindey infections are going to be that big of a deal, coming from an hour long class and not using the bathroom. As TangSooDoGuru mentioned, you can really tell with the ones who are serious. In that case, you let them go. But when it continues to happen, something has to be done. BINGO!

Instead you have to find ways to discourage toilet breaks, and also ask beforehand if everyone has gone to the toilet.this goes two ways, yes martial arts instructors can deny potty breaks, even i do. but i did have one child actually pee on the floor during my class one day, no fault of my own actually, believe it or not i asked him multiple times if he needed to go! anyway, you can tell when a kid truly needs to go to the bathroom and when they do not, once over the age of 7 they should be able to hold it so, dont let em. but there are some kids that you can see it in their eyes and posture...LET THEM GO!!!haha trust me you'll thank yourself later. like i said previously i discourage potty breaks by adding the pushups on once they return. also each time someone asks me i ask them in a stern loud voice..."now why didnt we go before class???" and when i get a blank scared stare thats when i go..."go quickly, bow in and bow out or your dead. 20 pushups on the way back in!" also heres another hint, if the same child asks, every other class to go to the bathroom around the same time every class, they are just going for the fun of it, start cutting back.

without getting into too much chatter, i want to forewarn you, if you want to stay in a decent shape do not go over 2 miles at a decent running pace because i made the mistake of falling in love with running and doing six miles everyday, and got shin splints which are the most unbearable thing to ever have to deal with because its such a high impact area and my doctor told me if i ever want to do anything of the athletic sort ever again, i cannot run more than a mile at a time. and i do cardio about every othe day, just to save my shins and other various body parts, i supplement it with lifting and ab workouts. so its safe to say on the treadmill the most i'd run is a mile but the most effective thing to actually do is put the uphill grade on the highest it can go and walk about a 3.5 speed(usually gets higher as i got along) with ankle weights on, its unbelievable, its alot more low impact than running but you work up a heck of a sweat, and you can feel it tone your calves, glutes, and hams as you go. hope this helped, have fun, happy walking/running!

Well Kez i teach a youth class so i get all the hellions from about age 4-15(oh yeah, its a blast and a half!) As far as the whole drink and potty thing, we just make them do pushups when we get back ten for the first kid 15 for the next 20 for the next 30 for the next, etc. so eventually the appeal for getting that drink or using the toilet is lost. and also to gain that respect youre looking for, and try not to be the complete bad guy at the same time, i read our 'rules and protocol' sheet to them out-loud every now and again and at the end i remind them, these arent my rules, these are the rules and have been the rules for the art that we study longer than any of you can imagine and it usually keeps them behaving for about a week or two, at which point you just read it again! but to make forms fun i add a small twist that makes it still a learning experience but, something new...i blindfold them with their own belt and ask them to perform their form. its fun and challenging. chattering can be brought to an end to just loudly say the child's name and give them a look, the whole class will recognize that this child is misbehaving and it will embarass the child so as it wont happen again. hope any of this helps, let me know if you have more questions, the kids are a tough age group!

Fighting someone who has no control
TangSooDoGuru replied to dragonwarrior_keltyr's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Absolutely in the street you will be attacked like that but for class purposes i'd talk to him. We have a student like that, but he is mentally..uhhh... not on the 'up and up' i suppose you could say and he has aggression issues, very badly. the black belts are fine with him, but it is my students i fear for when he fights, so we had to talk to him because we didnt want him hurting and lower ranks but if he hurt any black belts it was theyre own darn fault and they should know better. -
yes its true, gang bangers of the past have been known to put a roll of dimes in their fist because you could knock people out quicker. also if you look at most boxing gloves they have a little hump on the palm, that fills that 'empty space' you speak about.

Will Martial Arts help someone with ADD?
TangSooDoGuru replied to krunchyfrogg's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have dealt with this many times before. I have multiple students with ADD and ADHD at white belt they were EXTREMELY hard to handle but as rank progressed and i began to hone them in more and more making rules and regulations stricter and stricter they became remarkably better. -
Breaking boards/bricks/whatever in public.
TangSooDoGuru replied to Kante's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
usually my studios only do demos three to four times per year and they are usually to promote the school and just have something cool to look at so most of the time we are suppose to look show offy and amazing to attract people, and most of the time that seems to be the intent so it doesnt phase me. -

Self taught martial arts
TangSooDoGuru replied to shequan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i hate to suggest any 'self training' stuff but i do believe the 'idiots guide' authors makes an idiots guide to either karate or tkd. and if you look online theres a bunch of, get your karate ranks online, but you are right those are extremely frowned upon, youre probably going to get more respect just going to a mcdojo. -
her some fights
TangSooDoGuru replied to dholmes's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
the fights were cool, very tkd. but the only thing that startles me a bit is that your dojang walls say...'our goal is black belt'. didnt you say your instructor is straight from korea, as in actually korean? -
Need Ideas for Kids Summer Camp
TangSooDoGuru replied to Akaratechick's topic in Instructors and School Owners
iam an instructor as well and i was just curious as to what 'red ninja' is if you dont mind elaborating alittle bit. and also as far as the water balloons go, i do this drill with various items but i throw them at the kids as a yell a specific technique and they acquire points more for the harder techniques and less for the easier ones, half points if they hit, and no points if they miss, full points if it breaks. also i bought rubber throwing stars, put all the kids up against a wall, gave them boundaries and if they got hit theyre out, last one out wins. good luck. -
