What would happen if Bruce Lee was alive today?
Hpkid0ist replied to inyctrotter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My teacher knew Lee. They trained together from time to time. As someone else stated in a simular thread elsewere. My teacher agrees completely that Lee had small man complex. He was good and influinced our style quite a bit. But he was an actor and knew how to give people what they wanted. -
We always use any high kicks as finishing kicks, or in combinations. Never do we initiate with a high kick, with very few exceptions. And we do a lot of kicking.

One thing to keep in mind. Im many places if you strike first then you are the instigator, even if you FELT that they were gona attack you. Ya gota be sure.

If all else fails knee cap the sucker. But even with those that are'nt all that much bigger than you, there are just some people you just can not punch or kick out. So how do you take down an immoveable object? Destroy its base. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa....

What does black-belt mean to you?
Hpkid0ist replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A black belt means that you have learned all the basics in your style and now its time to start your real training. To me its that plain and simple. -
should you be relaxed?

In my dojang we do not use our hands to block. It is to easy to hurt them any way you block. We use our forearms, and elbows. As for the original question. Compare it to a stick and a piece of string. Neither ever know that they are about to get hit, so they stay as they naturally are. The stich is tight and when struck does little to absorb the force of the impact. And possible breaks from the concentrated force. The string stays loos true to its nature, and when struck it conforms to the shape of the stick sending the force of the impact in many different directions. In the end the string is left virtually anchanged and ready for the next sneek attack to come its way. -

Ultimate Korean Art
Hpkid0ist replied to Radok's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
It is very hard to get to the inside of a master TKD practitioner yes, but I wouldn't say it was even a combat art. -
His instructors instructor is Emperado. He is trying to get as complete a tree as he can.

Combat Hapkido - John Pellegrini System
Hpkid0ist replied to Billy Jack's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Billy Jack I am a 1st Dan in trditional Sin Moo Hap Ki Do under 9th dan GrandMaster J.B. Lee. I have checked up on the Combat HKD style myself. It isn't a bad style. But its not for me. There is so much in traditional hapkido that is effective and applicable reguardless of wether it is Judo defenses or whatever. Com. HKD takes these theings out becouse they feel it is unessecary. Not exactly true. There is a time and a place for all techniques. If a Com. HKD and Trad. HKD fighter who are matched in all abilities and skill level square off then who do you think would win. Probebly the person who knows more. It doesn't hurt to know the extra techniques. But don't judge all Com. HKD by one laxidaisy school. Remember its root is in one of the most destructive combat arts in existance. Good luck. -
Remember a Dojang is first and foremost a buisness.

TKD/Hapkido
Hpkid0ist replied to karatekid1975's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I study traditional Hapkido. My opinion is mixed. I have also studied TKD and A TKD based hapkido. As others have said it depends on how you teach. You have to stay 100% true to the Hapkido hand techniques or risk making them less effective. I say this becouse this is what I ran into in the TKD school and the TKD based school. The school I'm in now has the most effective and painfull way of doing the same techniques that I learned before. I can only assume the same of the others that I learned. As well, traditional Hap Ki Do does not perform all their kicks the same way. We do not snap any kicks at all. And from what my teacher has told me we have almost 18-20 more kicks than TKD does. Kicks that are associated with HKD. It is an iffy thing, but hell I think anything can be possible. Personally I don't think I would like to study in that school. -
An instructor has to be a good medium. You have to be firm when needed, keep the training an enjoyable experiance for all, be tentive to your students ability so you can correct their tech. or form when needed and praise them when they improve. You have to be a mentor and a roll model. I do my best to be all of these things.

Here iswhat my GM told me about the subject. A loose muscle reacts quicker and is more fluid tahn a tight muscle. A tight muscle is slower and quicker to injur than a loose muscle. As well a tight muscle requires your heart to work harder than a loose muscles. We do not tighten up anything until the moment of impact, this goes with blocking to. As for fists, we don't make fists. If we want to use a closed fist then we close it at impact. We leave our hands slightly open to allow for a quick close or to quickly execute a hand technique. -
My first teacher's teacher had studied the Sai at one point and taught it as the first weapon to all his students. I guess you would just have to find a Korean school with training in non Korean weapons and teaches them. My teacher studied Chines weapons and teaches that to us.

Make sure that you use your calvs. Use your calfs to get a little more spring in you jump. Also, there is an exercise that we do ( cant remember the name) where you squat all the way down and using your ankle and calf muscles push up with your feet ensuring not to straighten you knees any. Try and go as high as you can and just bounce away.

Hey 12 hours is what I'm told. After work they go to class. My teacher said that they get very little sleep. Of course not everyone will do it this way though, even the old school studios.

My GM will not permit us to wear all black. He believes it is bad Ki, with the 2 tone being balance, and all white being possitive.
-
All of our students wear white. Black belts wear a white bottom and the Hap Ki Do dimond top. As a senior belt and instructor I am permited to wear my dimond top and black pants. My senior instructor wears a white or white dimond top with either plain black or black w/ a red stripe for his bottoms.
