What to do with the kids' class Smart A*se?
DeeLovesKarate replied to angelica d's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think i'd have given him a warning and then sat him down and let him watch silently. After you finish a few forms go over to him and have a quiet conversation with him and ask him if he can manage to finish the class and raise his hand before speaking. if not leave him there and talk to his parent. depending on how old he is. if hes above like year 6 then just threaten to kick him out. -
New instructor lesson plan help
DeeLovesKarate replied to cartoon22's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I dunno... i tend to make up lesson plans off the top of my head based on my training and what i've never seen being done that needs to be worked on. except with the cubs... with them there has to be a plan. written. lol -
we tend to use old 80s pop or techno stuff. we have our swat team make mix cds that have good solid beats. for a (very short) period of time we used disco. im gonna bring in some russian techno soon. =)

Most hated/killer excersise?
DeeLovesKarate replied to Akaineko's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
shuttle runs, which i had to do for phys ed. the worst part is you go get the shuttle, bring it to the starting point, then go back for the other one. i was like... what the hell? and i picked up both and ran w/ them. that was easy... -

Previous athletic experience?
DeeLovesKarate replied to Beka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Out of my skateboarding 'career' I learned the ability to land safely on the floor (due to falling off a lot practcing tricks)... a skill usefull in my later attempts at Aikido, where you attempt to blend with your opponents energy and your opponent attempts to blend you with the floor. I'd say skateboarding is also good for improving balance. I'd say that, but I'm not actually sure seen as it never seemed to improve my balance one jot! lol that is true. i wasn't trying to offend any fellow skateboarders, in any way. That's just a lot of what it did for me. I think dance may have done more for me, because i've done it for so long, but i've been involved in sports since age 4. Which is pretty good for being the first girl in my family, and the first alltogether. set a standard for injuries for the boys, i'll tell you that. "A nessuno piace d'essere ingannato"- Me -
Well, i have two for swimming, =). I'm going to see if i can weedle (is that a word?) my way onto the swim team before the end of the term, because that high school has an indoor pool, but if not... well, i guess i'll be running a marathon. your suggestions have given me something to think about and work on putting together. Thank you, Dee =)
-
Well, obviously the number. =) But moreso endurance and speed, which i am lacking of in both categories. strength as well. i used to be pretty strong, and then i had a series of injuries that put me out of MA for around 5 months, and off my feet for slightly longer. Most of the muscle i had in my legs deteriorated, and the temporary strength in my arms from crutches is gone, so i'm left not much. =/ that i'd like to improve.

I did Seven Years of Dance and some skateboarding. Out of dance, i got flexability, which is where my high kicks and splits come from, and good posture and attention to form. well, good posture in dance. I slouch terribly now. Out of skateboarding... the ability to take a hit? =) -
what is your personal battle cry?
DeeLovesKarate replied to Icetuete's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i usually yell out "ike", but we have a kiai in our dojo that is a play on our accents, because we're from boston... it's warrior pronounced with a boston accent so it comes out "wayah!" Good times, good times. =) -
...And i have to eat every four hours cuz of some meds i'm on, so.... it's difficult to figure out what to do
-
I don't know. Supposedly, i'm being unrealistic, according to others in my dojo, but i think i could stand improvement, and it couldn't hurt
-
is it good for a 5'1" female to weigh 145 lbs? if not, any idea what the ideal would be? Thank you, Dee
-
I completely agree with the o.p. I was terrified of teaching, and even though i waso nly required a couple classes at first, i made myself cover everyne's shift if they couldn't teach. I think the whole immersion process made it so i realized i don't have time to be afraid. and even if i am afriad, then it's a waste to avoid my fears that are necessary to my well-being. (i'll be a paid teacher in Sept. go me. passed my certification!) Spiders, on the other hand, are different. i run like hell. =)
-
Full splits, but even better, i can do a jump kick and land in a full split =) did it in my open forms, doncha know. once with the sai in my hand... my hand hit the floor and the handle dug into my skin... not fun. lol.
-
5-1 143-ish... not good. lol.

I'd drive as far as I needed. Is there a local university or something? sometimes colleges offer classes. I mean, one of my senseis lives in NH and drives all the way to around boston where my dojo is. Every day. to teach. She also teaches a shotokan class at UNH cause she knew more than the instructers there. Check around. Try to find a sensei even if u can;t find a dojo. I mean, ask around. Not all martial artists and dojos r listed. I dunno. I'd prefer to drive over an hour to get to class rather than buy a tape. I mean, nothing beats the atmosphere. Plus, what about sparring?
-
::sighs:: I wish I were good at shotokan. lol. I'm alright. I'm not the "elite" yet. That's what i like to call the blackbelts. lol

The Big Question: Why Do You Do Martial Arts?
DeeLovesKarate replied to Sutton_uk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
LOL. On number 10, crushes develoup in the dojo, man. There is nothing more attractive to me than a man with a passion. Because it shows that they can love. That they can care about something that much. and that I can share my interests with them. I think dedication is also attractive. I dunno why, but it's just something I value. Prob cause I try to have it.
