  1. Vulpes alopex, that's the scientific name for an arctic fox. Who says that Mammology course wasn't useful? A fox is quick, cleaver, and definately my favorite animal.
  2. There's just something about Tai Chi sword forms that I love. If I could learn one weapon form and only one this would be it.
  3. Wow, you could here a pin drop in here. Any help at all?
  4. It's just amazing that you guys have spent that much time adding to the discussions here. Glad to be a part of it (bows).
  5. I think Rushman may have your answer here.
  6. While it's not a drill people at my school have been running in 5k races lately. They run before and after class most nights. Don't know if this helps but you could try it.
  7. I'd add sweeps. Gotta love the sweeps. More hand techs too. We get alot of crap about that
  8. Yeah, no real technique to it at all(reason I quit). Regardless, it was fun. This Message was edited by: niel0092 on Jul 29, 2001 8:55pm
  9. Coolest weapon: Katana, esp. Grass Cutter one of Japans royal treasures. Cool story. Weapon(s) I want to learn: tonfa, short stick, staff weapons I can use: I did broad sword in SCA for a while. Fun, but the armor's awfully heavy. Plus, I was much better if I had a shield.
  10. I think the point of it is the precision. Also it does take a certain amount of force, they don't break by themselves after all (much to the chagrin of lumberjacks I'm sure).
  11. Now that I think about it we do sign a waiver before we're allowed to train at my school. The feeling out process is left to the individual though and varies night to night. Sometimes I don't mind getting beat on and other times I could really do without the groin shots. I'm sure alot of people agree with this. This Message was edited by: niel0092 on Jul 25, 2001 9:29pm
  12. So how do the other MA schools get around the insurance issue? It sounds like Ken and Angus to name a few pound on their classmates in sparring and drills all the time. How do your schools deal with this guys?
  13. Angus, just in this section for a while. By all means, continue on as normal elsewhere. It's good to hear different views. What tech's do you like in sparring? Anyone? Buler? Buler?
  14. Depending on the instructor we spend roughly 1/3 of our time working on self defense in a given class period. Not including one steps. We work on escapes from different grabs(wrist-cross,straight, both;shoulder) and holds(bearhug, behind, headlock), add a strike(s) to the escape, and progress to a sweep. We don't do enough take downs though.
  15. LOL, we could add a dance beat and market it as excercise tapes ala Tae Bo
  16. Taezee, I like that one too. iamrushman, do you use a jump back kick? If so any tips? I could stand to work on that one myself. Also what do you mean exactly by a "turning side" kick. Our terminology may be slightly different here.
  17. Yes I know this thread started out as a sport tkd bashing section, but let's turn it into something that's worthwhile instead.
  18. Ok, back on topic here. What combo's have people found to be effective durring TKD sparring? Please no more comments about street effectiveness, my art beats up your art etc. This is the "sport TKD" section after all. We can discuss those things elsewhere. Here's a combo I like: When the opponent uses a mid level round kick I step in at a 45 degree angle, blocking with one arm and punching with the other. This stops their momentum and gets me out of their optimal range. I then just pick up my front leg for a round kick to score a quick point. I've found that the sudden jar of the punch makes most people stop for an instant (not something they see everyday in TKD as it usually doesn't score) making the kick that much more effective. From here you can use just about anything else.
  19. I purchased a pair of Tonfa the other day just for kicks. I've heard that they are derived from a part on a grinding wheel, any truth to this? If anyone has info on tonfa or can suggest good books and videos please let me know
  20. Sometimes there does seem to be something to the whole ki thing. I don't know if it's just being "in the groove" or more than that. It may actually exist and we just haven't found a way to measure it yet. After all, we couldn't measure the intensity of light until very recently but we all knew it was there.
  21. It just goes to show you that weird things can happen. He hit the guy with a left round kick hard enough to make him fall over. As the guy fell he threw his leg out to get one last shot in. The kick came straight in and my friend couldn't get out of the way. I don't really think he could have done to much about it but broken hands are better than broken teeth.
  22. I like the sport side of TKD. It's almost like a rough game of tag. If when playing tag someone occasionally got their teeth knocked out. Do you know how hard it is to find a 24 hr. drug store that is actually open 24 hrs in this town? I spent 2 hrs trying to get my buddies perscription filled after he got hurt.
  23. Thanks, I plan on sticking around for a while and am looking forward to learning more forms. There's really nothing like watching (or participating in) forms when they're in perfect sync.
  24. I still just have to say ouch! Was it a normal baseball bat(s) like you get at a sporting good store?
  25. They break my heart every year but I like the Vikings. Being from MN I'm born to watch hockey and the Wild did alright this year.
