  1. WOW this is the first time ive read a thread and been tired just reading it!!! will definitely try them though i doubt i'll get very far, by the way why are they called burpees?
  2. Getting a nasty hit on the shin can really hurt. The other lesson we were doing takedowns in class and somehow (i'm still not sure?!) while i was going to grab this guys leg i heard a crack! we stopped and his big toe became swollen and bruised. I was more concerned about him at the time but when i got home my shin was all green and looked as if id smuggled a golf ball under it! Its now purple and i laff at it! : ) (It was my left shin also, definitely somethin goin on there! )
  3. Hey b3n, congratulations and well dun! its quite an achievement!
  4. woah! we really got something started here!
  5. Hey there and welcomes to the forums! is it still raining and freezing in staffordshire?!
  6. Okay! that shattered my illusion bushidoman! how shud you train to gain speed then, cos i thought smaller automatically meant faster?
  7. some of my mates think that the black belt guys are really cool, but was thinking are they cool because of the black belt or would girls like em' anyway, regardless?
  8. Hi everyone, do u know, i didnt know there was an introductions place! cos i kinda started out with a thread..... neway. I'm 22 yrs old and I'm practicing Goju Ryu karate, started 3 months ago now. Ive always wanted to do MA but was always kinda scared to tell you the truth, there are a lot of stereotypes which is dumb if u ask me. Well all i gotta say is this is the best random site i found 'accidently' on the net, and kinda glad to, so hello to all u peeple out there and i hope i can contribute something worthwhile to the forums!
  9. Ive started Goju Ryu recently and we have to keep our fists high (pull back to middle of ribs height) This feels kinda awkward but apparantly u gain more momentum when aiming at the opponents solar plexus and body blows cos ur fist is either coming straight out or slightly down. kinda to do with physics i guess but if the punch has to come up then ur working against gravity therfore slowing u down ever so slightly.
  10. I reckon if you've got power go in for the punches otherwise a well timed kick can be deadly so i guess both! When it comes to grappling the key is keeping your body weight and centre of gravity as low as possible otherwise you can be thrown off. If struggling with an arm bar use your feet to break the other persons grip and if your in guard (the person has pulled you down and locked their legs round you) dig your elbows in the middle of thier inner thigh to free yourself.
  11. Yeah I'm only 5'-1" myself and someone told me that it means that your target area is smaller so that makes harder for opponents? Anyway there is an optional 'fight night' at my club and my sensei said we didnt have to fight but i dunno, I'm thinkin I'll overcome my fear and give it a go! I'll let you all know what happened if u like!
  12. Hope everyone has a fantastic holiday and a wikkid 2007, ur all a great bunch and unlike a lot of people in other forums.x
  13. Yeah I see what you mean, bcos sparring and actually hitting a body is different because its dynamic and moving. Is it possible for you to take a few classes outside of your town, say a few times a month or whenever you can to get the experience? It doesn't matter if its a different MA or style cos you just wanna get the 'feel of it'. I know time and cost play as factors here but it might be worthwhile.
  14. Hi savedbygrace, this is just my opinion it may be completely wrong, but maybe if you practice your technique on the students that u spar with, not neccessarily giving it the 'full force.' Then practice the speed and force of your technique on a punch/body bag (or whatever they are called!) and if at anytime your not sure ask your sensei about correct technique. Goodluck.
  15. Thank you to all for a warm welcome and taking time to reply. I will definitely take on what you have all said and I think the main point is technique and speed, as P.A.L and obiwansbane mentioned, which I will have to work on. And yep I will have to practice as Neo Dragon and lordtariel suggested, I have to remember to point my feet in slightly! I guess some of it has to do with confidance cos I guess I don't really know what I can or can't do yet.
  16. Hi, I have recently started the Goju Ryu style which I'm really enjoying. I just wondered if anybody had any tips for little people!!! As I'm a petite female and find punches quite difficult. The other members of the club can be intimidatingly large, though they are very nice people and I guess if anyone has any advice on how to excel a bit better I'd appreciate it, thanx.[/b]
