The Human Weapon
NightOwl replied to bushido_man96's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
It does- up to fifteen. Also, Budo Taijitsu doesn't do sparring as a policy or weapons sparring. The challenge at the end was made up at the spot so the fact that they didn't do that well against Bill and Jason isn't too surprising since they never really trained that way before (also, unarmed combat has more emphasis in the system). I still haven't seen the episode yet though...looking forward to it! -

I'm a bit of the same way- I've seen some 'I'm a black belt!' t-shirts out there and I really don't want to have to fend off cretins shouting out bruce lee war crys all day. While a club or group is different, I still don't want to have to deal with that potential problem. -
neither have I, but I found the use of it in MMA fascinating- very unique indeed.

Have any of you had encounters with it? I am curious because it definitely is made for display purposes sometimes, but I have found some people using it in cross fighting matches: http://youtube.com/watch?v=e67uap4ZEzE

Hey- anyone use this move? I've recently come to have a great interest in it, even though I doubt I could pull it off. In case you don't know what the suplex is, here are some videos including the judo variant ura nage:

Actually, being well rounded / comprehensive systems were the norm for awhile. If you look at classical schools you'll see weapons work, striking, and grappling. Besides that, there pretty much isn't any style that is 'pure' and not influenced by importing things from other styles. The founder(s?...not gonna touch that one) who started TKD studied many martial arts. So did Kano the founder of Judo, the founders of many chinese martial art styles, etc. In fact, pretty much all of the 'masters' studied various styles, and I doubt that they invested 7+ years in each one. Yes, I agree that it is good to 'major' in something, especially between grappling or striking, but the idea of not branching out isn't a healthy one in my opinion. -
he spelled 'Combative Skills' wrong. It's 'Skillz'

Is the sun shinning brightly over there in Fantasy Land? Hey, it works for me! Dead serious! However, I am not saying that I am always right, either. However, there are times where I am. Your wife must be a very patient woman

What do you mean by that? Wrestling is one of the most widespread and oldest styles of martial arts- whether shuai jiao in china, the wrestling of the greeks, or modern day greco roman (which is actually mostly derived from a French grappling style with some other European styles thrown in despite the name), wrestling is a martial art in that it is a set system and school of combat moves. What about taking up Judo or submission wrestling or shuai jiao as mentioned before? -

Supposedly there are some injuries on the TKD episode..... Ninjitsu- Dec. 14th TKD- Dec. 21st -
I think that in general the lower body is the most important in martial arts. Whether it is hip rotation for striking as mentioned, lower body leverage in many grappling styles, or even an emphasis on low stances.

Cross training and gi's.
NightOwl replied to Brady's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
If it is loaded with patches and school identifications, then I would agree with you. However, if you have a plain white gi, then I don't think it would be a big deal. yeah- although for jujitsu you pretty much have to switch to the grappling gis if you want to avoid going through a new one every other day -

Ah- finally got all of the videos seen! I don't really feel like giving too much of an in depth review though, so I'm going to try to keep it short. Cambodian Bloodsport: VERY similar to Muay Thai- but then again it is from the same region so that is to be expected. Overall it was pretty good- as mentioned before the fight seemed more of a sparring bout than anything, but it was still fun to watch. One thing that did bother me a bit though was...I felt a bit guilty for watching it. Although Muay Thai has similar aspects to it, in cambodia especially there is a feel that the people fighting (many of them kids really) are giving up themselves for petty cash (it mentioned that many of them have to stop before there mid 20's). I mean, yeah a boxing match is the same but they aren't in there fighting for their lives, and they are fighting in an environment where there are a lot more safety precautions. Anyways... Silat: Crazyyyy stuff. Silat was definitely one of the more unique ones covered, and I found it very interesting. A lot of the styles actually reminded me of Chinese systems such as hung gar or Eagle claw- however these guys seem to go at it fairly hard core. Oh- and there is a claimed crazy trained in a cave super killer silat master....AWESOME. The jumping through hoops, claims of instant death from a knife, and some other things made me roll my eyes at points though. Also although Bill passed the challenge, it felt to me that he made the same mistake one too many times MMA: It was bound to happen- the mma episode! Lots of cameos, a nice overview of strategies, etc made this a good episode. But by far the best part was the back to back fight at the end. Seeing Jason win his bout was great- even more surprising though was to see bill tie up for a draw with a top MMA fighter! Very exciting and one of my favorites. +stgstwthwrhtwoyr5woqiotrhw';a;$#!385y34yrl On another note, season two has already begun filming and the first two episodes will start later this month. The two upcoming styles are: Ninjitsu and TKD. The first being ninjitsu. I am not too sure about the ninjitsu- human weapon's history has always been a bit sketchy, I still am smarting from 'Fight Science) where they have a guy who is in reality a stuntman coming in to demonstrate ninjitsu. Supposedly from what I have heard, since the bujinkan has a no sparring policy (for the usual reasons), they didn't really know what to do for the final challenge. In the end they decide to do a one point tag sort of thing with weapons. /:cry -
No, PS3 still does have exclusives- Rachet and Clank and Uncharted: Drakes fortune are the best of them and very highly rated. In fact, Wii games (outside of the very excellent and recently released Mario galaxy) have in general been getting very low scores, because so many developers are putting out low quality tiles with poor motion control because they know people will buy it just because it is for the wii. That isn't to say the the Wii is bad- but the motion controls for the most part have not been implemented well, and outside of first party nintendo games good software is scarce. If you wanted to go Nintendo, I'd highly recommend a Nintendo DS.

That's going to be the same though on any next gen system- it's about 10 dollars more for the latest games (£5 roughly eh?) for about an average cost of £30 pounds using fuzzy currency conversion. The European gaming scene is especially rough though : P

BJJ videos
NightOwl replied to ps1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
This one may take a little longer. We have a few wrestlers at our school, but I don't see how you would get into that position. I'll ask Chris (collegete all american) how he would put someone into it and then see what I would do. You have a collegiate all-american at your gym, too? Wow, you really have some great resources at your disposal. In your videos, it seems to be different with you guys rolling than when me and my friend practice. I feel like I am always in frantic movement while rolling. You guys appear to be much more methodical. Is this just lack of experience? Once you get used to it, you learn to keep your cool and take your time more. Of course, you kind of need to know the right moves in order to make this effective, so at first you are going to be a bit more frantic when you roll. -
Actually, that is changing *clears throat*. On the newer cheaper model they removed backwards compatibility, so you can't play PS2 games on it anymore. As for the console itself, there are some good and bad things about it The good: Blu-ray, although it isn't 'games' it is a much better deal then just buying a blue ray player by itself. -Fairly good rate of not breaking down compared to the 360 - No region locking --You can play the latest games The bad: -No rumble...although this will be corrected in the future. - Playstation exclusivity is on the wane (one of the reasons why the PS2 was so great). I don't really feel like getting into the reasons right now but if you really wanted I could give a more detailed explanation later). In so many words though, this means that the reasons for owning a PS3 over an Xbox 360 are few. The only big exclusives that I can think of are 'Uncharted', and Final fantasy 13 and Metal Gear solid 4...the latter two won't be out until later though and MGS4 has long been rumored to eventually come out for the 360. -Developer familiarity with the 360 leading to sometimes the PS3, although it is technically the most powerful of the systems, having more framerate issues etc. ========= In the end, although I don't have any of the next gen consoles (the latest I have is a DS and a PS2), I usually recommend the 360 for price (unless you really want blu ray) and game library. Come to think of it- how old is your son? Do you know what kinds of games he likes?

Grappling Blows my mind

I love George Foreman! He'd give that lowlife Tyson what for! Then he'd make everyone delicious and low fat snacks on his George Foreman grill! -
I had a bit of a tiff with my girlfriend a few weeks back- rules to keep in mind: You are wrong, even if if you are right. You can win the debate, and still loose. Humility and sincerity- no 'I'm sorry but...'. Say that you are sorry and mean it. A peace offering What I did was go over to her apartment with two packets of coca mix and while drinking chocolate we talked it out. Actually we got closer because of it....hot chocolate fixes everything!

what is kung fu?
NightOwl replied to avxsk8erpunk's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Mantis practitioners look kinda awkward at firts, but give them an opponent and you will see a challenge in the awkward fighter. Mantis focuses on forearm and hand techniques, grappling and chin na techniques. The purpose is to get close to the opponent, overwhelm him and either strike him down, or subdue him on the ground. the hands take the form of a mantis arms(claws) and are used to deflect, control and strike and opponent with ease. Kicks are usually low because of the defensive posture of this style. divided into 2 groups: northern and southern northern mantis has more complex footwork. southern is focused on quick short power. I have an interest in mantis as well. I think that either that, or Baijiquan will be what I practice sometime in the future. -

Here's a video with a scissor sweep: http://youtube.com/watch?v=f3fll41mDjs I will admit though, I am not a fan of the open stance/wide punches. If I saw that the first thing I would think of doing is stepping in and trying to test out a bit of my new judo. Even another CMA like Bajiquan would take advantage of it. Speaking of which...I would really like to study Bājíquán...
